Namco Bandai throws Dragon Ball onto the DS

Filed under:

Recent V-Jump scans reveal that a Dragon Ball game is in the works for the DS. While we don’t have many details on the game, it’s going to be an action/adventure title that delves into the background of the Dragon Ball saga. We also know that the controls will be similar to those in The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass, as the player will use the stylus to perform actions and direct Goku around the screen.

From what we saw in the tiny scan screens, the game looks to be shaping up pretty nicely. We’ve never been too into Dragon Ball ourselves, but if we were, we’d be over 9,000 kinds of excited right now.

Community sites are the future for Sony games

Filed under:

At last year’s GDC keynote, former Sony head Phil Harrison talked about the importance of “Game 3.0.” Inspired by “Web 2.0,” this new era of gaming is focused on community-driven efforts, as seen by the currently-in-development Home and LittleBigPlanet. However, Sony’s other games are going to take advantage of the “Game 3.0″ mantra. Joystiq’s Chris Grant listened on to a few plans in upcoming Sony first-party games.

  • Killzone 2 - Killzone Liberation (PSP) already has a community, but an extensive collection of “rankings and statistics” is planned for the much-anticipated Killzone 2.
  • SOCOM: Confrontation - A new community site will be launched on SOCOM.com, most likely offering web-based community functionality.
  • MotorStorm: Pacific Rim - How MotorStorm will integrate with online functionality is unclear, but it will happen.
  • Resistance 2 - Insomniac is working on the most ambitious plans for online integration. MyResistance.net will add “Facebook-like features,” which is something we’re intrigued by.

Online communities, such as Facebook and MySpace, are important staples of many web users’ daily habits. We see expanding the online world of games to beyond the PS3 console will make the overall experience more immersive. Imagine: in the future, we may be making new friends through Resistance instead of Facebook.

New Project Origin video compares, gushes blood

While some may look to water and its undulating physics as the standard for current gen eye candy, developer Monolith’s yardstick is apparently a tad more crimson. The studio has released a new video for its F.E.A.R. follow-up, Project Origin, showing off the way blood will be handled in the upcoming sequel by comparing the previous game’s visceral cherry mist to what can be best described as Project Origin’s syrupy goop.

On the game’s recently launched community website, Monolith FX guru Mark Wood explains some of the work that went into the project’s interesting, if messy, take on in-game gore. Writes Wood, the team is working to make the blood “visible from far away, while still feeling meaty and satisfying at closer anger,” something he concedes was lacking in the original F.E.A.R. The end result looks a bit like blasting strawberry jelly out of a bad guy, which in all honesty should be reason enough to get you to watch the video below.

Space Invaders Extreme and Arkanoid DS in a color explosion

Taking a look at these new Space Invaders Extreme and Arkanoid DS screens, it’s clear that the games are going to be nothing short of trippy. We can’t wait. It’s unfortunate that those of us outside of Japan will have to import the paddle controller, but that’s just a small price to pay for such a tantalizing pair — we’re just grateful we don’t have to import the software, too.

Square Enix also announced the European release date for these titles, which is July 4th. Luckily (for this blogger), those of us in the U.S. and Canada won’t have to wait as long to get these in our greedy little hands, as the North American date is June 17th.

Browsing through our galleries will give you a taste of the craziness that is SIE, while the Arkanoid DS pictures will show you some of its cool-shaped levels. We’re definitely more stoked for the former, but maybe that’s just us. How about you? Which revamped Taito classic are you looking forward to more?

More Dragon Quest DS decor: DQV cover

Just yesterday, NCSX began taking preorders on adorable Dragon Quest slime DS Lite styli. Today, they’ve revealed a thematically appropriate companion piece: this Dragon Quest V DS protector. Much like other Hori Protect Cases, this is a transparent hard plastic cover for the DS, with attractive monochrome artwork on the top. This one features artwork of the Hero and the game’s logo, and looks cooler than we expect things with Akira Toriyama art on them to look. This one doesn’t come with any other accessories, which in our minds is just another excuse to go ahead and spend the $7 on a Slime Stylus.

The Dragon Quest V Accessory will ship in July for $13.90. Try not to scuff up your DS before then!

Filed under:

It’s alright everyone, Ask X3F is here. We know you’ve been waiting, slavering at the chance to sink your eyeballs into another action-packed edition of our column devoted to both Q’s and their A’s. Rest assured, we are happy to oblige in every possible way. This week, we boldly explore the Xbox 360’s lack of mutli-person private chat, overscan problems, and the absence of Bionic Commando: Rearmed. We also do our best to start the Guitar Hero IV versus Rock Band 2 flamewar months and months (possibly even years) in advance. Find out if we’re successful after the break.

Got a question for Ask X3F? Maybe you have a story or some information you’d like to share? Send it all to ask [at] xbox360fanboy [dawt] com.

New games and new release dates for THQ games including Lock’s Quest

Filed under:

Gamefly’s DS listings have been updated with a bunch of tentative release dates. A bunch of them are THQ games, leading us to believe that the rental service received some kind of communication from the publisher — which makes the dates more believable.

Lock’s Quest, the new strategy/action/tower-defense game from Drawn to Life developers 5th Cell, is listed for September 17. The Nickelodeon stuff has dates too, if you’re interested (Drawn to Life: SpongeBob SquarePants Edition September 24, Naked Brothers Band October 15, Tak Mojo Mistake, SpongeBob: Globs of Doom, Back to the Barnyard: Cowlympics all October 22).

Our Gamefly search has also revealed that THQ has picked up Mikoishi Studios’ Drop Cast (website here) for U.S. release. According to the listing, it’ll be out October 14.
