Right, here, in Syberia. You might not know this, but Syberia is one of the best adventure games ever made, and any computer would be honored to have it running. It’s like a fine wine, and tastes better than most of the garbage people cram into their PCs these days.
Hooray for the DS, because this atmospheric winner is getting a second chance to grab the attention of portable players. We’ve picked up the first several screenshots, and it appears the updated inventory system will now be fixed at the top, handy for simultaneously controlling Kate Walker via the touch screen. More details as we get them, but ink up that pen for adding this bad boy to your shopping list ultra-soon.

Following Square Enix’s direct, Sega has released new CG-dominated trailers for its forthcoming RPG, World Destruction: The Will That Leads, replete with dramatic music and shots of sky-bound airships.
Advocates of in-game clips need not raise their voices, as the publisher has put out an alternate trailer with combat scenes , as well as another movie advertising the planned anime, World Destruction: The Six People Who Destroy the World, both videos embedded past the post break. We’re sure that were it possible, Sega likely would have put together a trailer for the upcoming World Destruction: Two Angels manga, too.
The trailers and details for the mix media production were debuted at a recent Sega meeting, in which the game’s scheduled Japanese released date (September 18th) and 2GB cart were revealed. The game includes some 300 event scenes, a large assortment of maps, and, in particular, a large set of voices. World Destruction will be making the most out of all that space, featuring over 300 event scenes, a benevolent amount of maps, and an impressive set of voices. Check our gallery below for screenshots, character art, and CG grabs from the trailer!

Atlus sent out this cryptic note of apology in an email yesterday. The note, from “Player 4,” asks Player 1’s forgiveness for infractions ranging from “Changing your name to Buttface,” “Convincing players 2 and 3 to gang up on you,” and “Sending a Robo-Assassin to terminate you.” The image in the email links out to a teaser page that promises a new game announcement this Tuesday at 10 AM Pacific.
NeoGAF’s duckroll suspects that the game in question is Sting’s Dokapon Journey, which just happens to be a multiplayer RPG-style game that includes name-changing options. It could also be the Wii Dokapon Kingdom game. Our guess? Both.
We’d like to apologize for hiding the full apology card after the post break, and then compelling you to click. It was either that or putting a really tall image on the front page and apologizing for that.

In one of the most interesting case studies since Galileo tested Aristotle’s law of gravity, two console versions of Quake Wars were released this week. But, like identical twins separated at birth, their development rendered different results. Take a look for yourself. Check out all of our hands-on impressions and reviews from the Joystiq Network this week:

With the amount of hype, advertising, positive reviews and media attention Grand Theft Auto IV has received over the past few months, we wholly expected it to remain on top of the software sales charts until our video game consoles grew sentient and attempted to purge humanity from the planet. Strangely enough, a dark horse recently overtook Rockstar’s well-received crime drama in many European territories — a horse mounted by a brawny, rippling Cimmerian.
Yes, Funcom’s decapitation-rich MMORPG Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures recently outsold GTA IV in a number of European locations, including Germany and Sweden. Since Rockstar’s latest opus is still selling like freshly baked hotcakes in North America, we can’t help but wonder if GTA’s themes of living the American dream and hooker brutalization got lost in translation as the title crossed the Atlantic — or whether Age of Conan’s musclebound mascot reminds German gamers of a certain pop culture icon who is quite revered in their country.

Yeah, that’s right: we’re number one! Take that, world! It’s just a shame that us Europeans can’t also be the best in the classification of buying totally rad games, because things aren’t looking too hot for DS software right now — even Brain Training is showing signs of tiring this week, and we all know how long that has been knocking around.
Other than that, this week is only really notable for Grand Theft Auto IV’s continuing dominance and Wii Fit’s dramatic plunge. Truth be told, we think those new DS Lite colors might just be arriving in the nick of time — the PSP benefited from a boost in sales when it received a fresh lick of paint in Japan, so maybe the same will happen here.
As usual, charts are after the break.

Nich Maragos, localization product direct for Etrian Odyssey 2 (and Gaming Intelligence Agency alum), has taken us inside the English naming process for Etrian’s characters and items in a new Production Diary post. Like classic RPGs, Etrian has an 8-character restriction on all monster, character, and item names. This isn’t so much of a problem in Japanese, in which a single kanji can express a very complicated concept, but in our phonetic writing system, it’s a bit more of a restriction.
This means that not only is Maragos and his team encouraged to be a bit creative with English names, they are required to be creative. They have to condense concepts like Fundo No Gankou-Nushi “Owner of the Malicious gleam” into something that can fit into eight characters: in this case, “Illgaze.”
A lot of work goes into translating text-rich RPGs like this. Mythological references, in particular, are trouble, as some random Japanese word could actually be a transliterated Old Norse name.

Thanks to Capcom and GameTrailers, there’s a brand spanking new “Captivate” Resident Evil 5 trailer that’s guaranteed to give you a satisfying dose of zombie killing and virus exposure. The RE5 trailer (viewable above) also shows plenty of in-game action, beautiful, gorgeous in-game action where, at one point, we swear we counted twenty-seven zombies on the screen at once. And a few infected dogs. There’s also a chick, man.
