Why must Japan torture us with their
DLC of
Disgaea 3: Absence of Justice while we wait simply to play the game? Fortunately, we have a drop of water here to quench your thirst. NIS producer Souhei Niikawa, who also wrote Disgaea 3, and direct programmer Masahiro Yamamoto sat down in an interview with
Gamasutra.
Niikawa is adamant about priorities — working on being successful in the land of the rising sun, and simply hoping the game will sell in America. He feels that as a Japanese person he is incapable of making a game targeted towards US audiences without being laughed at. We beg to differ, Mr. Niikawa! Yamamoto, on the other hand, defended their lack of next-gen graphics in their title by saying: “Even if it’s the latest super console, we’re trying to make the most fun games out there.” Niikawa expressed his desire to use next-gen power “for the gameplay itself, for something new that maybe you’ve never seen before.”
The interview concludes with Gamasutra remarking on how Nippon Ichi is in Gifu Prefecture, which is “the middle of nowhere” in Japan and how that affects their development. Niikawa feels Tokyo has too many temptations and distractions — in Gifu they are able to concentrate on their work. Perhaps this is the secret to Nippon Ichi’s ability to make such unique and amazing games. Read the full interview here.

The DSVision flash card kit, containing an officially Nintendo-approved flash card and a 512 MB MicroSD card, will be released to Japanese stores on July 3. NCSX is charging 40.90, and Play-Asia is asking $39.90. That’s not terribly expensive for a flash card with bundled memory, but it is quite expensive for something that may end up being totally useless.
Unless you have access to a Japanese credit card, you won’t be able to buy any of the content that AM3 is selling through the system. And who knows if the thing will be usable for any kind of homebrew? It’ll take experimentation from homebrew developers before anyone knows. Feeling adventurous?

In a preview from ThreeSpeech, there’s a coy allude of file size for Siren: Blood Curse and its episodic content. It appears each episode will average around 600 MB each. As stated in the preview, the episodes will obviously have varying anger but shouldn’t be too far from the average.
Considering that there are 12 episodes in total, expect to set aside a good 7.2 GB if you want to keep them all on your system. However, ThreeSpeech reminds you in the article that it is completely possible to delete an episode and then redownload it whenever you feel like. So space shouldn’t be that much of an issue. Siren: Blood Curse is still set for release this summer for both North America and Europe.

We knew that Red Fly hoped to release Mushroom Men: Rise of the Fungi sometime this year, so we’re pleased to hear that the software is on schedule and will be in stores this October.
Red Fly also went into more detail about the storyline of the game in a recent press release, since the DS version is a prequel to the Wii title. Both will cover different parts of the Mushroom Men’s history, with Rise of the Fungi detailing a time when they first got their special abilities. The Bolete tribe must stave off attacks from hostile insects and other creatures, until the Amanitas Empire becomes an even bigger threat to their survival. Mushroom Men fighting amongst Mushroom Men ultimately leads to the Spore Wars, which are covered in the Wii game.
We really like the idea of one game’s story leading into another’s in such a short period of time (as in, you won’t have to wait long between releases). While we’re still not sure when the Wii game will follow, you can expect it in November or December if Red Fly sticks to the original plan.

Sony has already denied the rumors regarding PS2 games for the PSN. Sony’s Patrick Seybold, director of corporate communications & social media, spoke to GamePro: “I’m not sure where the image came from. At this point, we haven’t made any announcements, and there are no plans for PS2 downloadable titles on PS3.”
Take Mr. Seybold’s answer for what it’s worth — an honest sounding, and somewhat surprised, reaction. We don’t know what to take from this and perhaps we shouldn’t read into it any further as there’s nothing really left to go on. Then again, the image in question belongs to the UK store while Mr. Seybold is with SCEA … hmm. Anyway, it is an interesting response to say the least. It is a very different answer to the usual robotic auto-reply “we do not comment on rumors and speculation.”

We learned of Disgaea’s delay in the States earlier this month, but for those of you who demand greater specificity in your release dates, Nippon Ichi’s most recent financial statement has exact dates in the US and A for both its popular SRPG and reference-dropping puzzler, Puchi Puchi Virus.
Apparently, Disgaea will be sending us crazy with its complexity on September 23rd, while the latter will be in U.S. stores from July 22nd. That’s really soon and sudden, especially considering how many delays Puchi Puchi has suffered! The question is: did you remember to pick up your free Anti-Virus Stress Reliever?

To be honest, we have no idea how Yggdra Union must’ve played back on the Game Boy Advance. The upcoming enhanced PSP remake features so much visual information on the screen that we can’t imagine how cluttered the interface must’ve been on the GBA screen. Yggdra Union is proud to take advantage of PSP’s widescreen aspect ratio. But we have to admit, after looking at these screens, we feel like we may be overwhelmed by even the most basic battles.

French site Wiiz has several screenshots of Mystery Case Files: MillionHeir, Big Fish Games’ new detective adventure game and leading candidate for most groan-worthy pun-based title of 2008.
As we know next to nothing about the game (typically for a Nintendo-published title, little has been revealed, despite its release date of September 8th being really close), these allowed us to indulge in some detective work of our own. Grabbing our deerstalker and magnifying glass, we discovered that the game’s shameless punnery extends to the characters (see: Cole Minor, a gem prospector), and that the DS’s microphone will come into use. Whether you’re for or against implementing the mic in games, it doesn’t look as though developers are ready to give up on it yet.
Check past the break for more shots.

Funny thing about huge updates: They come with lots of potential niggles and details that need to be clarified. Eric Lempel over at the PlayStation.Blog has done his best to address a number of the most frequently asked questions about firmware 2.40. In particular, there’s clarification that the web browser will not work during gameplay. Nor will voice chat, changing display settings and the PlayStation Store.
The FAQ also reveals that Sony is working with publishers to “ensure that trophies are supported across the board in the future,” which is a great sign. We have a feeling we’re going to want to get our hands on as many trophies as we can once the update hits. Trophy stat info is held server-side, so you will be able to view the trophies of your friends even if they’re offline (as Eric did in the second video). Sadly, unlocking a trophy does not “currently” make a noise (we’re crossing our fingers for 2.41!) and Eric’s favorite cheese is Mozzarella. An interesting choice.
Check out the post over at the PlayStation Blog for the full FAQ. We think that pretty much covers everything, unless you can think of something else that’s still uncertain?
