For those who are anticipating the July 11th Japanese release of Gundam Battle Universe, we have a couple of scans to help lighten the ache of waiting for this import to reach your hands. It features of the mecha from the many incarnations of Gundam, new mission features, and their female (at least I think they are… one can never tell with anime) pilots. Why is there another Gundam game you ask? Like the endless number of Dragon Ball Z games, they never fail to sell extremely well over in Japan.

The Interplay titles keep returning to GameTap as Descent II and MDK rejoin the service. We know that everyone’s waiting for Fallout, but MDK is a pretty sweet game. Of course, the whole reason for playing it is to see the bizarre music video at the end of the game, which even today is still fantastically jarring.
- Cosmic Osmo (Windows) - There’s some vague memory of having played this on a Mac way back in the day.
- Descent II (Windows) - Shoot everything in 360 degrees of blasting awesomeness.
- MDK (Windows) - If you can cope with the weirdness, there’s a fun third-person shooter in there.
This week GameTap’s list of free games welcomes Dracula Twins (never invite a vampire in!) and Five Card Deluxe. We also received an image from GameTap with the release schedule for the company’s upcoming original game Grimm. We’ve placed the free games list and the Grimm release image after the break.

Today, Koei revealed a lineup of new Europe-bound games set for the rest of 2008. Out of a bunch of games hitting the region this year, there’s only one PS3 title. What title is that you ask? It’s G1 Jockey 4 2008! Europe really wins big with this one.
G1 Jockey 4 2008 is a horse racing simulator. It’s a horse racing simulation without the gambling … which means half the fun of the sport is gone. Details on the game are scarce; however, taking assumptions from the “4″ in the title, this could be a slightly tweaked version of the two year old PS2 title. That … doesn’t sound too good. The game is out September 26.

Square Enix, like all companies, trademarks stuff from time to time, giving away snippets of precious information about its future plans. Sometimes, said plans are pretty straightforward, other times … the dots need joining up. The company’s latest visit to the Patent and Trademark Office yielded one of its more enigmatic trademarks: “Covenant of the Plume.”
While we were still scratching our heads like simpletons as to what this could mean, Siliconera’s Spencer had already identified a likely candidate: he reckons this could be a subtitle for the U.S. version of Valkyrie Profile: The Accused One, and hence acknowledgement of a localization! It’s not a massively outrageous leap to make: “Plume” equals “feather” equals “Omigosh what’s that in the logo.” Not too hard to believe, is it?

Because we love the style of the game — from graphics to gameplay, we thought you’d also enjoy this Mirror’s Edge video interview. The senior producer for the game, Owen O’Brien, talks a bit about Faith and the construction of the city she gets to run around in. Apparently, the city is very “monitored” and the citizens don’t like that. So, they’ve gone back to the courier system of sending messages to one another. That puts the running in perspective and why you should probably make your way to your client as quickly as possible. It’s a pretty excellent interview as it clears up a lot of mysterious bits about the game, so even if you’re vaguely interested, check it out!

We can’t really understand Konami’s marketing decision for New International Track & Field here. Usually, when it comes to advertising sports, sporting apparel or, heck, sports video games, we’re used to seeing athletes in the advertisements. But, then again, we don’t live in Japan.
There, Konami has enlisted the aid of celebrity comedians Coolpoko to advertise the title through a special site that is set to launch soon. If you’re wondering where you saw the guy on the right before, it was probably in an episode of Entourage.
We’ve included one of their videos past the break, to give you a taste of their comedic stylings.

Pyroblazer is set to give Wipeout Pulse a run for its money. Well maybe, only if there’s a publisher willing to pick up the PSP version. Currently publisher-less, the title developed by Candella and Eipix is another futuristic hovercraft racer looking for some lovin’ on our handheld system.
The game is set on a far off world called New Aperion where players control high-combat racing vehicles known as “Blazers.” Gamers will have to race and fight against other vehicles for championship gold — there’s no definite reason why … but we just guess that’s just what they do on that alien planet. Anyway, in addition to regular single-player modes, six-player ad hoc and online play are available. The official website has screens and trailers on the game, so check that out.

Tim Bennison, Executive Producer at basic Entertainment, has taken part in a Q&A session with PS3 Attitude, in which he speaks about various aspects of the upcoming sandbox title Prototype. Well, we say “upcoming,” but the game won’t be available until sometime in 2009. The team at basic Entertainment are taking their time and intend on delivering a fully polished game when it’s ready. Commendable.
If Prototype turns out the way they intend it then it should be an excellent title. There’s an emphasis on multiple play styles, allowing you to smash your way through the game or progress using stealth and deceit. Check out the full interview over at PS3 Attitude if you’re interested in finding out more.

Strawberries. Fairy tales. Cute pigs. Lots of gingham. There can be no doubt that Etsy user SmileRecipe’s DS cases veer towards the so-cute-it-hurts end of the spectrum, so if that’s not your thing (in others words, if you’re the manliest of men), then skip this post, eh?
For those of you still reading, we chose four of our favorite designs by SmileRecipe and popped them in the gallery below. For just $12, you can get a case that will hold your DS and a couple of spare cartridges, and attract plenty of funny looks (if you’re a dude).

In our continuing effort to bring you fresh and interesting content, X3F presents Would You Rather … a weekly feature that asks you the hard questions. The point? If you had to choose one or the other, which would you go for?
This week in a late-night (oooh, sexy) edition of Would You Rather we’re talking XBLA games. We’ve asked you in the past if you’d prefer smaller or larger games but this week we’re looking at it from a different angle. In the beginning Xbox Live Arcade was hailed as a great gateway to your favorite arcade titles (when it launched as a disc based service on the Xbox), but then something interesting happened–independent developers looked at the platform as a new source of output. With the introduction of the Xbox 360 and relaunching of the service built into the console, independent developers were met with great success for their titles.
Sure, corporate companies released arcade hits as well but no one took the service as serioulsy as the independent teams did. Today, as XBLA has proven itself to be a strong platform, more corporate companies are releasing titles for the service while independent companies lobby for their games to make it online. In Would You Rather this week we ask, who do you want to see more of a focus from on the XBLA front? Corporate companies with the money and licenses or independent companies with a fresh outlook on game design? Discuss. Vote. Ask for a third option in the comments.
View Poll
Feel free to share the reasons for your vote in the comments. We’ll share the results of the poll during the next edition of Would You Rather … which hits X3F every Wednesday.
Last weeks WUR results can be find after the jump … come in and check it out for free!
