The DS Life: Out of habit

Though we try to keep our praise of public property vandalism to a minimum, there are some instances when we can’t help but clap in our seats, humorless, like Orson Welles in Citizen Kane. This week’s edition of The DS Life is one of those instances, our subject being a magnificent bit of street art spotted in Darmstadt, Germany and photographed by Joachim S. Müller. Say ten Hail Marys and bring yourself past the post break for the photo.

Trophy Guide: Super Stardust HD

We finally unlocked all the Trophies for Super Stardust HD. As the first game available with Trophy support, many are jumping online to boost their PlayStation level. With 9 Bronze, 6 Silver and 2 Gold Trophies, we’re sure this is going to keep many occupied for quite some time. Here’s our guide to unlock all the Trophies. Good luck!

Hero of Lave - Complete planet Lave
Bronze | Difficulty: Very Easy
All Arcade mode Trophies can be earned in Easy mode. We recommend that you play on that difficulty to make it easier to get the Trophies you want. For this Trophy, simply beat the first level. Having trouble with the boss? Make sure you focus on only one weak point at a time. You should be able to destroy one weak point before he does his spin attack. His spin will vacuum space debris, so you may want to keep your distance in the early parts of this battle. The Trophy will unlock once you start the next level.

Namco Bandai serves up weird Dragon Ball DS screens

While it’s pretty easy to translate Dragon Ball Z into video games in which nothing happens but spikey-haired glowing dudes fighting and growling at each other in the air, its predecessor, Dragon Ball, featured all kinds of weird stuff. For example, the big noodle-serving/fighting guy here is actually a shape-shifting pig who saves the world later by wishing for panties.

A stylus-controlled adventure in the wacky Dragon Ball universe sounds infinitely more appealing than playing another game about Goku floating in the air and “powering up.” Dragon Ball DS will be out in Japan on September 18; no announcements have been made elsewhere.

Sony acknowledges firmware 2.40 problems

Filed under:

As reported earlier, firmware 2.40 has been taken down. Playstation.Blog has a post acknowledging problems with their latest firmware and assures us that it’s only temporary. A commenter concerned about those who have 2.40 installed already was met with a response of “we’ve received no reports of hardware issues following a successful install,” so those of you who have already installed the firmware have nothing to worry about. Stay with us as more information is available.

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in!]

Hong Kong students bring PSP to school, compete in exams

Filed under:

Next time your teacher tells you to put away your PSP in class, point them to this. In Hong Kong, a program called the “Mobile Learning Platform” takes advantage of various electronic devices (PSP included) and uses them to give students quizzes. According to the PlayStation HK site, “students can use mobile devices including PDA, mobile phones or mobile gaming devices to log in to the mobile learning platform and then test their own knowledge anytime and anywhere.”

The program will be used for an “inter-school mobile quiz” contest to be held on July 8th. Eighteen schools will participate in a challenge that tests their knowledge of the Olympics, and other trivia. Sony Computer Entertainment Hong Kong is one of the sponsors.

Y’know, when we were kids in school, we wouldn’t be able to use our Game Boys in class. But now, these students can use PSPs and win prizes. You guys have it so good.

[Thanks to Siliconera!]

Majesco draws up PAL release for Marker Man

Filed under:

We don’t just love MarkerMan for its imaginative physics-based puzzles, or because of the similarities it shares with the tremendous Pocket Physics. We also adore it because finally, for the first time since Pac-Man hit the scene, we have a character who is simple enough for us to draw effectively. Brilliantly, even. No longer will we have to last the cruel snickering of DeviantARTists when we submit our crudely drawn tributes to Marth. The picture to the right isn’t a piece of official MarkerMan art, but we’d totally forgive you for thinking it was!

And now, European artists will be able to try and better our efforts, because Majesco has signed up the rights to publish MarkerMan in the region. For the Euro release, the camel case will be dropped from the title, with the game instead known as Marker Man Adventures. It launches there in early 2009.

In the meantime, if you want to use this image in your European campaign, Majesco, just drop us a line on 000-1337-1337, and we can discuss fees.

PixelJunk Eden: ‘kinda like Bionic Commando and Ninja Five-O meets Peggle … with co-op’

1UP’s preview of the upcoming PixelJunk Eden is most curious. The strange title may be hard to grab from videos, but according to their preview, all is clear within minutes of picking up the controller. With the wildly successful PixelJunk Monsters under its belt, all eyes must be on Q-Games’ latest. It being the first new title to support Trophies will undoubtedly make it even more addictive. The combination of alluring visuals, yet another fantastic soundtrack, and simple and addictive gameplay make us want to download PixelJunk Eden as soon as possible.

LittleBigPlanet director talks about trophies, mandatory install, SIXAXIS

Filed under:

Eurogamer moderated an interview with David Smith, Media Molecule co-founder and technical director of LittleBigPlanet, and auspicious fans had the chance to send him some questions. Smith revealed some new elements of the game and confirmed some old ones; the release date is still October, with a beta trial that has already begun but Smith hopes “to have as many people as possible.” Trophies were slightly elaborated upon, with creation being a big focus: an example brought up involved creating a new tool/machine that will launch a sackperson at a high speed.

You can create inventions, then use a camera tool make copies of them, and give them away. A simple system of “hitting a button at any time and following a simple series of operations.” will allow users to report objectionable content, including copyrighted content. Water is currently not in the game, but “it’s something that would be very high on our list of priorities.” Gravity change is also said be added later on.

Whether install will be mandatory is unknown, but Smith simply said: “The HD install is perhaps around a gig. Perhaps more or less.” LBP will run at “30fps at 720. The game uses a lot of filmic techniques like depth of field and motion blur, so this fits the game pretty well.” There will be “VOIP and PS Eye support” but no further details are revealed. Finally, SIXAXIS will “let you look around, point at things and change your facial expression.” For more details, read a transcript of the interview here.

Taking a scary stroll behind the scenes of Twilight Syndrome

Famitsu has a pretty interesting video for those of you who’ve been watching Twilight Syndrome: The Forbidden Urban Legend. They sat down with three of the young ladies featured in the horror title for a behind-the-scenes talk about things that we can only imagine. We don’t speak Japanese, sadly.

But there’s footage from the game, along with a plethora of screens! As much as we’re certain we’ll never get this game in North America, we still like to pretend it can happen.
