Princess Maker 4: Implicitly erotic parenting sim coming to DS

Gainax’s (Neon Genesis Evangelion) Princess Maker series seems innocuous at first, a cute “life simulator” in which you raise an orphaned girl to womanhood. The dominant/submissive undertones in the games aren’t conspicuous until you accomplish the absolute control you have over every aspect of your devoted ward’s life.

You can train her in combat to have her fight at the Harvest Festival, put her on a diet so that she can wear fashionable outfits, or send her to work at a bar to raise her “Sinfulness” stat while lowering her “Morals.”

Depending on your guidance, your daughter can grow up to be the queen, direct an army, or marry the butler. If you raise her wrong, however, as we assume many gamers will do intentionally, she could become the king’s concubine, work as a sleazy barmaid, or even marry her adoptive father!

Originally released for PCs and the PSP in 2006, Princess Maker 4 is also coming to the DS with a Special Edition subtitle this September in Japan. Publisher Cyberfront has a few improvements and additions planned for the port — three new endings, stat details moved to the bottom screen, and, of course, touchsceen support.

According to the official site, using your stylus, you can “pat your daughter’s head, pinch her cheeks, and etc.” Etc., indeed. Try out a very concise and somewhat NSFW demo after the post break!

Burnout Paradise Cagney update not delayed for PS3

Have you heard the news that Burnout Paradise’s update known as Cagney has been delayed? Fear not, PS3 fans! While we’ve become fairly accepting of delays and assume any game or update getting delayed is due to the PS3, this way of thinking is incorrect in this case. The PS3 update is still scheduled to go for July 10, but the 360 version has unfortunately been pushed back a few days. All is not sunshine and rainbows, though. Sony Korea has yet to approve the update, so until they do, this won’t get released. It’s still expected by July 10, but if not, we know which Sony headquarters to give the hairy eyeball.

Special Edition Lite, stickers, and … global issues?

Filed under:

What better way to celebrate Independence Day than by putting the faces of governmental figures on a sticker? The real story behind the above isn’t quite that hilarious, actually. Late last month at the G8 foreign ministers’ meeting in Kyoto, this beautifully redone DS was spotted, alongside stickers bearing the faces of the ministers. All that’s missing is a sticker on the DS, though frankly, that Lite is way too pretty to muck up with stickers.

We’d probably do it anyway, though, for the lulz.

Hudson Soft thinks PS3 development costs are too high

Filed under:

In an interview with Yahoo Japan, Hudson Soft president Michihiro Ishizuka has cited high development costs and “associated risks of developing for the format” as reasons why they will not be making any full-fledged PS3 games. However, this doesn’t come as too much of a surprise; Hudson Soft, publisher of classic franchises such as Bomberman and Adventure Island, has only published two titles on Sony’s gaming devices (both Bomberman titles on PSP) this generation.

Nevertheless, Ishizuka did called the PSN “attractive” as a means to deliver games. With original games coming out on Wiiware, does that mean we’ll see some of these games ported over onto the PSN? Or will Wii and DS owners have all the fun?

Another Week in Japan: Hardware and software numbers 6/23-6/29

Filed under:

Oh, Japanese gamers, how we love you — after all, only you would buy 150,000 copies of Derby Stallion in one week. Such sales were enough to put this DS horse racing sim into first place, above Band Brothers DX and even the Wii’s Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World. Besides Derby Stallion and Band Brothers, another DS title that made it into the top ten was Higurashi no Naku Koru ni Kazuna, a murder mystery visual novel.

The beauty of it all is that this DS software success managed to propel DS hardware into second place, barely skating past the Wii:

  • PSP: 58,861 (490)
  • Nintendo DS: 48,884 (12,285)
  • Wii: 48,480 (7,443)
  • PlayStation 3: 17,973 (2,363)
  • PlayStation 2: 7,673 (1,327)
  • Xbox 360: 5,104 (2,549)

To see sales numbers and rankings for the top ten games, just click past the break.

Ninja Gaiden 2 gets patched, sorta

Filed under:

When most games get patched or auto-updated, we at least have a few words from the developers about what changes the patch entails. Especially if the game in question has a myriad of technical problems that we know have not all been solved. So, to turn on a 360 and see Ninja Gaiden 2 auto-update without any news from Team Ninja, Tecmo or Microsoft feels a bit strange. Though we do know Team Ninja and Tecmo have a lot on their plates at the moment, if they had time to work on a patch, surely they had time to send out a few press releases? But we digress, any patch is better than no patch for a game that seems to run in bullet time for some bits (Chp 10’s stairs) and the tubes have not let us down in their observations of some of the patches effects (though we’d've preferred official word).

The game-breaking glitch seems to be solved and any old “broken” saves can now be continued. The speed run leaderboards are now actually updated each subsequent time you beat your best time, instead of just sticking with your first score forever. And while the major technical problems such as slowdown haven’t really been addressed, we’re glad that the game is actually beginning to approach what it should have been upon release. Here’s hoping we’ll see more patches as time goes on …

Friday Video: Alternate history

Filed under:

This week, everybody freaked out (justifiably) about a port of a thirteen-year-old game. Since we can’t administer to think about anything else, we thought we would all sit back together for some Chrono Trigger content today, and celebrate our independence from having to keep another system hooked up.

This animated scene was added to the last enhanced port of Chrono Trigger, made for the PlayStation. Square Enix doesn’t seem to have a problem putting FMV on the DS, so we’ll probably see it in the new version as well. Hopefully the other new feature from that version — interminable loading times — won’t also be implemented.

Go back in time to five minutes ago so your popcorn will be ready right now!

Design a GRiD livery for the game’s upcoming DLC

While we’re not exactly sure just how many people out there are still interested in such a thing, Codemasters, the GRiD developers, are holding a contest for its players to design a livery (skin) for the above pictured car. The rules are real simple and you don’t need to be an art whiz or anything. Basically, download the picture package from here, and do your best to create an official “Codemasters Racing Team” livery incorporating the Codemasters logo into the design.

Going a step further, Codemasters artists will then turn that into game art for the car. And not only does the winner get his (or her) car in the game, but they also get ” a load of GRID swag” and “a framed high-resolution render of your car as it will appear in the game.” The contest ends July 25th, get designing!

Codemasters not planning on adding trophies to GRID

Filed under:

Codemasters is, sadly, the latest developer to be added to the list of those who won’t be adding trophy support to their already released titles. On the official GRID forums an administrator has posted saying that they’re “currently not planning to restrospectively support PSN trophies - it;s not a trivial thing to add to a game” [sic]. Though this is disappointing, it’s not too unexpected. Third party games are the least likely to be patched in. With Criterion showing their contemporaries, hopefully more will decide to rake in the goodwill of gamers by following suit.

[Thanks Nuno]
