Hayter discusses MGS film, Kojima creative differences

Filed under:

It seems that David Hayter really wants to pen the script to the Metal Gear Solid movie. He has been recently trying to get fans of the series behind his banner by asking them to email Sony and make it happen. Now, over at Anime Expo in Los Angeles, Hayter chats things up with 1Up, taking time to talk more about his vision for Solid Snake’s cinema debut and even divulging about a bit of frustration with Hideo Kojima’s over-the-top direction.

“Kojima and I have different styles,” said Hayter. “But I’ve certainly learned things from him, especially about ambiguity and telling a story without giving all the answers.” While he can appreciate Kojima’s work, there are quite a lot of areas where Hayter just couldn’t agree with what was going on with Snake. In particular, he refers to Snake’s suicide tease in previous MGS4 trailers: “I didn’t buy it at all.” He believes that Snake, with all his years, shouldn’t have to hesitate. “If he knows it’s time, then it’s time.”

Another folly in his eyes was a fan favorite scene from MGS1. “It’s a delicate thing to discuss love blooming on the battlefield with Otacon,” he said. Another one was the alternate ending with Otacon: “It felt like it was written to be romantic. It was just humiliating.” So what does Dave have in mind for MGS: The Movie? He’ll obviously ignore doing any of the above nitpickings. With that in mind, it would be interesting to see where he would go with the film.

PSP may have helped police catch multiple murderer

Filed under:

The last story we posted on, it appeared a PSP direct to a violent crime. We now have a even more violent story coming out of London; however, this time the PSP might have helped catch the murderer. The Sun reports that two 23-year old French post-graduate students shown above, Laurent Bonomo and Gabriel Ferez, were “bound, gagged and stabbed to death” in an apartment in London on Sunday night. The police believe they were tortured for the PIN numbers to their ATM cards. Bonomo was stabbed 196 times and Ferez was stabbed 47 times.

Fortunately, the police did have clues. They “established that two Sony PSPs are missing and believe they were taken during the incident on Sunday when the two men were killed.” They also released one of the PSP’s serial numbers, SO1-0613169-C. Today, a 21-year old man has been arrested in connection with the murders. It is unclear whether the serial number released helped solve the crimes, but it is good to hear a culprit has been apprehended in these grisly murders.

Gameplay video shows first part of Silent Hill: Homecoming

Filed under:

Supposedly from an early beta version of Silent Hill: Homecoming on the PS3, this Russian gameplay video shows a playthrough of what appears to be the first chapter of the game. Gameplay-wise everything looks similar to what we have seen before, and the provider of the video assures us the narrator isn’t saying anything we didn’t know already. In terms of story, we’ll refrain from saying much as small story elements are disclosed in the 13+ minute video, but it involves the protagonist Alex returning home and running into some old family and friends. Look for Silent Hill: Homecoming when it arrives September of this year.

Super Smash Bros. Rumble in the DS jungle

Building your homebrew project off an already popular franchise has the danger of raising expectations too high for your low-allot production, as was the case with Super Mario Galaxies, a 2D shoot-em-up interpretation of Nintendo’s grandiose 3D platformer. Though Super Smash Bros. Rumble has the potential to one day be a satisfactory portable alternative to Super Smash Bros. Brawl, it still has a long way to go!

So far, the demo includes only a solo mode, a few stages, and Mario as the lone playable character. Fuzzy, the game’s 19-year-old programmer from Germany, seems to have a lot planned for the project, however, as he already has a WiFi button in place and waiting for online support.

Just a quick suggestion — maybe choose another typeface for the top-screen logo on the menu screen? Though it’s resident blogger David Hinkle’s favorite typeface, Super Smash Bros. designer Masahiro Sakurai would never sully the series with Hobo.

Capcom: No trophy support for Devil May Cry 4

Filed under:

A poster on Capcom Unity’s forums has received an answer to the question of whether Devil May Cry 4 and Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo HD Remix will be getting the trophy treatment and it is no. Capcom feels that DMC4 already has “its own little trophylike system” and the Puzzle Fighter team has moved on to other projects.

There is a tiny bit of good news though, Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix may have trophies implemented, but it will depend on “what schedules look like and what Sony’s requirements are.” The only real good news is future games from Capcom will all have trophies, as it has “been worked into CEI’s developer contracts as a required deliverable.” Have other publishers signed such a contract?

This is rather disappointing, but after a string of such reports, we are not surprised. We are just really hoping SSF2T HD Remix will have support.

[Thanks, Jake C.!]

Being a Wordmaster won’t cost much

Filed under:

It’s not often that a game goes on sale before it’s even released, not that we’re complaining. If you enjoy word games, then, you might want to consider picking up Wordmaster at Amazon. Although the MSRP is $19.99, Amazon is currently offering the game for $13.99, which is as allot as it gets for a new release.

The title doesn’t even come out until July 15th, but you can preorder now if you want to secure the game for cheap. As for what Wordmaster is? Well, think Lingo or Jotto, only on the DS.

On a side note, you can also pick up Petz: Hamsterz 2 as Amazon’s “Deal of the Day” for $11.99. Um, woot?

Kratos will not be in Soulcalibur IV

Filed under:

48:40. That’s amount of time into yesterday’s 1UP Yours podcast that reveals Kratos will not be in Soulcalibur IV. They have been playing the game on both Xbox 360 and PS3 (though Yoda is mentioned immediately after the Kratos comment, they do speak of Darth Vader later) and they do not see Kratos in it. Unless there is some last minute change, which is unlikely, Kratos will not be in the main game. Sorry kids! Let’s all hope for something in the form of DLC then, shall we?

Airplanes in Burnout Paradise?

As Criterion Games wraps up development on the soon-to-be-released Cagney update for Burnout Paradise, the team is already experimenting with what future updates could bring to the title. Previously announced bikes, night-time driving and a new island have been revealed as key additions coming to the game but now Criterion has revealed the team is experimenting with airplanes. Continuing the developer’s admiration for high speed, planes could be an interesting addition to the series but it doesn’t appear that anything is set in stone just yet.

Until then we’ll make do with the 3 new online modes, 70 online timed challenges, ranked racing improvements and live updates page all releasing for free with the Cagney update, which has been pushed to July 14.

Another Week in Europe

Filed under:

In a week when Final Fantasy Tactics A2: Grimoire of the Rift and Ninja Gaiden: Dragon Sword failed to penetrate any of Europe’s charts, the locals instead turned to the non-game. Ubisoft’s My Health Coach: administer Your Weight (My Weight Loss Coach in North America) was the highest-ranking new DS entry on the continent, with a TV campaign ensuring it reached 27th in the UK. Cooking Guide: Can’t Decide What To Eat? also enjoyed a more successful second week, rising eight places in Britain and just squeezing into Ireland’s top ten.

Next week, Europeans welcome the arrival of Bakushow and Arkanoid DS, and will hopefully not stave off the newest Space Invaders. Let them take you over, puny Earthlings! Heck, they’d run this planet better than us anyway.

As far as serious chart contenders go (because let’s face it: none of the aforementioned three are going to sell in the bajillions), the two latest Pokémon Mystery Dungeon games are hitting stores. Expect some top ten finishes from those.
