New video for The Maw

When we first set eyes on The Maw we knew we were looking at something interesting and new. With a concept like “eat everything to change yourself and world, to get an alien home” it sounds like a winner. And now with some video to go with the idea, we’re almost sure it’s going to be a winner. Using some sort of electrical tether that looks similar to something seen in the newest Banjo trailer the player swings and grapples around the world while directing the loveable purple glob to down useful items as needed.

This looks really good, good enough, in fact to be one of the finalists in the PAX 10 indie game competition. Congrats to Twisted Pixel!

GameTap Thursday: ClayFighter and Aveyond

This week GameTap adds some new titles that might be worth trying after you’ve gotten through the last few weeks of excellent additions to the service.

  • Aveyond (Windows) - The sequel to this RPG, Aveyond 2: Ean’s Quest, will join the service in two weeks.
  • ClayFighter (Windows) - The ubiquitous fighter genre in the ’90s took a considerably strange turn with the addition of this title.

Once again, GameTap doesn’t add any new free games this week, but there’s still plenty to check out in the list after the break.

The Expendables: Guns blazing, everything exploding

Following Most Wanted Entertainment’s unveiling of Mechanic Master, IGN investigated the Hungarian studio’s site and dug up an interesting squad-based shooter in development — The Expendables. Using the touchscreen, players guide “the world’s lamest international private army” through 35 missions, blowing up almost everything in sight.

As you can see in the trailer and screenshots, this doesn’t look like the most polished game, but the character sprites (and the buzz-saw tractor) definitely have some charm to them. The Expendables actually reminds us of a faster-paced Syndicate. You remember Bullfrog’s Syndicate, right? That series was tight.

MWE hasn’t yet announced whether it has managed to pick up a publisher for the title. We have a feeling that if the studio ever does find one, it will have to find a more useful implementation for the top screen. Not that skulls laughing and machine guns spitting out bullet casings aren’t totally awesome.

*Sigh* More Newton motion control rumors …

Filed under:

Sure Microsoft may have gone back on their “we do not comment on rumors and speculation” policy to debunk the Banjo -> Newton connection, but they didn’t go so far as to declare that there isn’t a motion controller at all. Over at xbox360oz, they claim that the latest copy of Xbox360World magazine has an inside source that then claims that not only is the project real, but that it also uses tech from a company that already makes motion controllers.

This is all quite tenuous and feels like grasping at straws, but it’s some interesting food for thought. The Motus “Darwin” controller does make sense as a starting point for a company looking to agree the Wii. In fact, the company website mentions the Wii in comparison to its product quite often, and has several news stories running along its bottom that deal with the ol’ 360 Newton rumors. Evidence? Of course not. Curious? Definitely.

Get here already E3! We need all these speculations and rumors to end, interesting as they all may be.

Ten Rock Band 2 tracks confirmed

Filed under:

Looking for some hard info about Rock Band 2’s tracklist? Well, look no further. Gamespot got a little bit of hands-on time with the much anticipated game, and it looks like the earlier leaked tracklist was correct. The 10 official songs released so far out of 80:

“Ace of Spades” — Motörhead
“Everlong” — Foo Fighters
“Pinball Wizard” — The Who
“Panic Attack” — Dream Theater
“Any Way You Want It” — Journey
“Chop Suey” — System of a Down
“Kids in America” — The Muffs
“Give It Away” — Red Hot Chili Peppers
“Hello There” — Cheap Trick
“Pump It Up” — Elvis Costello

Looks like the only song that wasn’t in the old list is Elvis Costello’s Pump It Up. Backwards compatibility with the first game’s DLC is once again confirmed. Another big feature discussed is online World Tour mode — band leaders have been eliminated and you can change your lineup whenever you wish and any character will be able to play any instrument. Other new game modes include Tour Challenge which will replace the Solo Tour from the original game — you are able to unlock new challenges as you progress. It can also be played with up to three other players, whether they are local or online.

Wark! Two Chocobo trailers waddle into view

Filed under:

Making sure that you get the message — the message being “Chocobos are really cute; buy our Chocobo games” — Square Enix has posted trailers for its two recently revealed fall-bound Chocobo titles, Cid and Chocobo’s Mysterious Dungeon: complexity of Time DS+ and Chocobo and the Magic Storybook: The Witch and the Girl and the Five Heroes.

As you might be able to tell in the promotional clip and the game’s title, Cid and Chocobo’s Mysterious Dungeon is an enhanced port of Chocobo’s Dungeon (released in the U.S. for the Wii this week) with more focus on Final Fantasy regular Cid. Given the nature of roguelikes, this DS release doesn’t look like that much of a “downgraded” experience compared to the Wii version!

The Chocobo and the Magic Storybook clip isn’t nearly as epic, but if you’re enough of a Chocobo fan to have read this far into the post, you’ll likely want to watch it anyway. Jump past the break for more of the flightless, chubby bird.

Resident Evil 5 welcomes Sheva Alomar into its fold

Filed under:

It seems Gamekyo got a hold of a magazine scan that reveals a small detail for those keeping up with Resident Evil 5. It’s nothing groundbreaking or any sort of news landmark, but it’s still something worth knowing. Either wow your friends or yourself by knowing the name of Chris Redfield’s new partner — revealed in the scan as Sheva Alomar. Not sure what else the scan talks about — Japanese-fluent readers, help us out! Chris and Sheva, alongside some other cast members, will be popping some mutated enemies early next year. Look forward to it!

Ikki Tousen website shows why it will never come to the US

Filed under:

First off, most of the links on this post are slightly NSFW. Nothing graphic, but you probably don’t want your boss to catch you looking at it. Now we got that out of the way, let the fun begin.

As reported before, Ikki Tousen is basically Sailor Moon remade as a fighting game by males, where the female warrior’s clothes explode when they receive damage. The official website launched late last month shows us all the juicy details, including each girl’s body measurements, the very unique Costume Destruction System, screenshots including the girls in shredded clothes, having been defeated by their opponents and the most important aspect, the story. Finally, they have a blog where the creators of the game post pictures like this. Look for this game in Japan on October 2nd.

DS version of Galactrix missing online play

Filed under:

What a bummer. We were all excited when we saw the first screens of the DS version of Puzzle Quest: Galactrix attached to IGN’s preview. Then we had to go and read the preview.

Galactrix will feature the same multiplayer modes as Challenge of the Warlords. That means the Xbox 360 and PC versions will be playable online, and the DS will include local multiplayer.” And just like that, our dreams of Puzzle Questy Game Nights disappear like four contiguous red blocks.

This is less of an issue, of course, for people who have friends outside of the Internet, but we were really hoping Infinite Interactive would bring online play to the platform that made Puzzle Quest a household name (for certain values of “household”). And the screens do look affable.
