It was a sad day indeed when the rumor that Eternal Sonata might not see the light of day outside of Japan. Thankfully, that rumor may be just another one to stick on the “Not Gonna Happen” pile, as the game has been spotted on the official UK DualShock 3 compatibility list. The list itself was updated on July 8th, only two days ago, along with a whole host of games including some which are due to come out in the next year or so, such as Edge Of Twilight and Brutal Legend.
Does this mean it’s headed West at some point in the future? Our guess is yes, which really makes our day (as if the iPhone launch wasn’t enough). Hopefully an official announcement will be made by Namco Bandai soon. Wait, what’s that just around the corner? E3? Fingers crossed.

Our wallets sighed in relief after finding out about a Play-Asia sale, and then ran away screaming once they realized that we were now tempted to import the entire store. If you import games as well, now’s an advantageous time at the online retailer, and if you don’t, there’s no better time to start. Play-Asia is currently having its annual Summer Sale, which started today and ends on July 20th. This means that every in-stock item is 25% off — beautiful.
Even after just one day of sales, many coveted items have already gone out of stock. There’s still a lot to be had, though, so make sure not to put your importing off for too long.

Oh Coffeetime Crosswords you are a funny, funny game, but are certainly not the kind of release we want to see during the week of E3. Thankfully an email came that ended our apprehension. Having been flying under the radar a bit this year, Shred Nebula will actually be hitting the Live Arcade on July 16th. For the calender challenged that’s next Wednesday.
The top-down shooter may appear to be just another twin-stick game but it actually has roots in both Asteroids and, believe it or not, Street Fighter. With a concept like that, and the promise of large free-roaming space environments we’re willing to give Shred Nebula a good portion of our busy week next week.

Despite appearing in the Soulcalibur IV UbiDays 2008 Transcendence trailer, Algol didn’t become official until today. Heralded as the “strongest character ever in SC series” by character designer Hideo Yoshie, Algol possesses the Soul Calibur on his left hand and the Soul Edge on his right. He can also fly in the air and has ten kinds of weapons built into his body. Algol’s armor is of a bird motif and originated in an ancient kingdom lost to the sands of time. While the above picture shows Algol when he was still human, his hair color change signifies his transformation into something more. Check out the differences over at CVG.

5th Cell co-founder and creative director Jeremiah Slaczka has taken time out from working on Lock’s Quest to chat to IGN’s Matt Bozon about his company’s forthcoming construction/Tower Defense game.
In the resulting interview, there’s plenty of discussion about 5th Cell’s commitment to innovative games (something we can totally believe, considering 5th Cell created Drawn to Life), and also some concrete details passed on. Slaczka confirms that Lock’s Quest’s story mode should last for around 20 hours, and also clarifies the game’s multiplayer for us: apparently, there’ll be no Wi-Fi play, but wireless local play for two players, in the form of a Vs. mode.
On an unrelated-to-Lock’s-Quest note, Slaczka also appears fairly clever to distance 5th Cell from THQ’s licensed Drawn to Life spin-off, Drawn to Life: SpongeBob SquarePants Edition. “With SpongeBob for example, that’s our IP, but we didn’t make it,” he points out. “That’s cool that THQ wants to move in that direction, and that’s fine, but that’s not something we’re interested in personally.”

David Hayter, voice actor for Metal Gear Solid series’ Solid Snake and Hollywood scriptwriter, has responded to the reports about statements that came out of the recent Anime Expo. ” … I have a somewhat acerbic sense of humor and occasionally, the things I say get taken out of context, or misinterpreted by the press or the Internet Community (I know that sounds hard to believe, but it happens.) Also, large crowds of people tend to freak me out,” said Hayter.
1Up, who originally ran the story about Hayter’s “frustration with Kojima,” has posted a letter written from Hayter to 1Up clarifying that his words were taken out of context. “I made a joke about another “notorious” moment from Metal Gear Solid, the first game that I recorded, in 1998 … Anyway, I referred to performing the scene as “humiliating,” but if you watch the videos of the panel, I hope that it is clear that I was trying (perhaps failing,) to be funny.”
Hayter continues, “I not only owe a huge portion of my career to Metal Gear, and to Hideo Kojima, the genius who created them, but I am also a rabid fan of the games. I have played through each and every one to the end. I have watched every cut-scene, listened to every codec conversation. I have Metal Gear posters on my walls.” Read the full letter over at 1UP.

The most recent Japanese charts showed us that musical instruments have more legs than horses, as Band Brothers DX jumped up into the first place spot. Meanwhie, Nanashi no Game made its debut in the top ten, but only sold a total of 30,000 copies.
Hardware sales were also interesting, as the DS stubbornly held onto the second spot:
- PSP: 56,439 (

2,442)
- Nintendo DS: 47,455 (

1,429)
- Wii: 44,525 (

3,955)
- PlayStation 3: 14,359 (

3,614)
- PlayStation 2: 11,768 (
4,095)
- Xbox 360: 4,776 (

328)
With the Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G craze finally starting to quiet a bit, we don’t think it will be too long before the PSP dips closer to DS sales (as long as Nintendo’s handheld can maintain its own momentum). Enough about the future, though — it’s all about the now. So, go on and see how software fared last week in Japan by clicking past the break.

Not to be outdone by the onslaught of Rock Band 2 information leaking out, Activision has officially announced a collaboration with Line 6 to integrate the Line 6 POD into the new Music Studio in Guitar Hero World Tour. The Music Studio is a feature that will allow you “record, edit and share their own rock ‘n’ roll anthems.” No vocals though, sorry! The POD, on the other hand, basically allows the player to change guitar tones using amps, cabs and effects. You can go anywhere from acoustic to heavy metal with this baby.
The official site also launched with a video explaining how all of this works — Liam Lynch, director of Tenacious D in The Pick of Destiny and Tim Mahoney of 311 tells you their experiences with the game. Lynch is particularly enthusiastic, claiming the POD “might be the most incredible object in the universe of music.” You can check out all the screenshots, the video and other content here.

Empire Interactive’s Hello Kitty: Big City Dreams follows Hello Kitty as she moves out of Sanrio Town to seek a new life in The Big City. What will she find when she gets there? Minigames!
As Kitty pursues her goal of moving into a penthouse apartment, she can do chores for her neighbors and meet new people. If it sounds a lot like Animal Crossing, that’s probably no coincidence. As it turns out, it looks a lot like Animal Crossing too. But we’d love to play a Sanrio-themed Animal Crossing. As far as we’re concerned, the closer the ripoff, the better.

Part of this year’s Into the Pixel collection is a sketch from “Half Life EP3″ (wonder what that could be), coming to Xbox 360, PC and PlayStation 3. We’re not exactly surprised to learn there’s concept art for Episode 3, but it’s still affable to a glimpse. We’re still not betting on a surprise E3 performance. Check out the highlights for today:
