Can anyone ever be sick of good news? Maybe you guys are tired of hearing how well our beloved handheld is doing in Japan. But we doubt Sony minds the good news, and neither do we. However, we do mind coming up with a new headline for the same good news every single week. Maybe you guys can give us some suggestions in comments …
Week of June 30th-July 6th:
- PSP - 56,998 (
559)
- Nintendo DS - 48,540 (
1,085)
- Wii - 41,768 (
2,757)
- PlayStation 3 - 12,458 (
1,901)
- PlayStation 2 - 10,405 (
1,363)
- Xbox 360 - 3,807 (
969)
The PSP outsold itself from last week, selling 559 more units. Its big brother, the PlayStation 3, didn’t fare so well — sales fell by almost 2,000 units.

Release details were lacking when, during their E3 conference, Microsoft announced their Vision enabled B movie creation game You’re in the Movies. But now, thanks to some Joystiq detective work, we know that the game will in fact be bundled with the Xbox 360’s Vision camera peripheral for a B movie price of $60. That said, MS hasn’t revealed any details for obtaining the game outside the Vision bundle or whether or not the $40 stand-alone Vision camera will still be available this Fall. Patience as we figure out this You’re in the Movies distribution confusion

If you enjoyed Izuna: Legend of the Unemployed Ninja (or at least thought you might), then there’s good news: the sequel is just as charming, just as engaging, and perhaps even a little more fun than the original. The sequel has a lot of new things, including a second baby step toward making Izuna 2: The Unemployed Ninja Returns a hair easier on your sanity and frustration levels.
That’s right — while Izuna’s games definitely fall under the roguelike brand, they’re a fingernail easier than the traditional dungeon crawler. That doesn’t make them any easier to me, but the hardest of the hardcore may scoff at Izuna’s differences, while the rest of us can actually attempt the game without “accidentally” dropping the DS or anything. What’s different? In both Izuna 2 and its predecessor, when you die (and will you ever die), you keep your levels. In keeping with the roguelike tradition, you lose everything else, but it’s not absolutely everything in a square-one sort of way. Izuna 2 adds something else on top of that: the tag team system. And that’s where things get a little sticky.

Pokémon Mystery Dungeon pair Explorers of Time and Explorers of Darkness reached mainland Europe this week and performed well on the whole, achieving lofty positions in the charts of Holland, Germany, Spain, and Italy (in the UK, they’re occupying 21st and 24th place respectively). Cooking Guide (top ten in Ireland, Spain, and Italy) continues to help most Europeans to be better cooks (I emphatically do not count myself in that number), and would you check out that German top ten. Ho boy, go Deutschland!
Next week, we’ll see whether or not Guitar Hero: On Tour can agree the runaway success of the U.S. version. Will Activision’s outside-the-box marketing techniques have worked?

I believe I owe it to you, Inconstant Reader, to let you in on a little secret. I haven’t booted up my PS3 in nearly 3 weeks. There’s no opportunity that I foresee which will allow me to press that glorious PS button for at least another month. Most summers I spend 6 weeks away from home teaching
existentialism to high school students (don’t be ashamed
CTYers, I know at least a few of you reading this were once one). This summer a series of
logistical difficulties forced me to abandon my beloved system behind, though I shouldn’t complain as this may have prevented an accidental
bricking. Aside from a few softly stolen moments with a dozen
warmongering eyeballs, my sole interaction with the Kingdom of Sony consists of several hundred RSS feeds per day and the occasionally glimpsed television commercial on the dining hall’s plasma screens.
While thoroughly enjoying my undercooked homefries one morning I happened to hear the snippet of a rousing pre-battle morale speech the likes of which long preceded the Mel Gibsons and Viggo Mortensons of the world. Lifting my head to peer through the digital window I caught the tail end of Sony’s most recent commercial for the PS3. You know the one - I call it Acronymial 2008 - with the MGS4 and the GT5:P and the LBP and the spiritually affected voice of KB. It certainly showcases a good lineup of exclusive titles, two of which I own and one which I assuredly will, and it brought a tear to my eye to see them, ever so briefly, in all their high definition glory. But then it got me thinking (because I certainly didn’t want to think about planning that morning’s class): What does that particular trio of games say about our beloved product?

E3 has come and gone, and to the surprise of some of us, Nintendo didn’t announce a DS redesign. How do you feel about that? Are you disappointed? Or, maybe you’re relieved that you won’t be tempted to buy new hardware anytime soon? Either way, let us know what you think about the lack of a redesign announcement from Nintendo.
Also, out of curiosity — what would your goal DS redesign include?

Based off of our explorations of the Croft manor in previous Tomb Raider installments, we can say with absolute certainty that Lara Croft has a pretty sweet pad. Or, rather, had a sweet pad — in the latest E3 trailer for Eidos and Crystal Dynamics’ Tomb Raider: Underworld, the titular adventurer, now sans hot pants, apparently lays waste to her extravagant dwelling.
The two-minute, gameplay-less trailer is visually impressive, though our minds are racing with questions surrounding the top-heavy historian’s act of residential sabotage. Is she trying to collect on her homeowner’s insurance? Is she attempting to quash a rather formidable termite infestation? Perhaps she’s trying to earn a visit from Extreme Makeover: Home Edition? We’ll be finding out when Underworld explodes onto store shelves November 18.
