An unexpected treat for PS3 owners appeared on the PSN tonight. Firmware 2.42 is now available for download. We’re currently in the process of downloading and installing the update, but rest assured that we’ll have full details soon. (We’re guessing it’ll be Life With PlayStation, promised to arrive by the end of the month.)
Update: Looks like our guess was wrong. There doesn’t appear to be anything new on the XMB. Perhaps this is just another “stability” or “security” update. We’ll update again if we find out more.
[Thanks, John!]

Kaseo’s Yellow Mouse Orchestra is a cacophonous array of circuit-bent Pikachu toys wired up to a MIDI controller, allowing Kaseo to turn the critter’s trademark self-namechecking to create musical compositions. The result sounds oddly chiptune-like, despite being made from voice samples. The video above is a pretty listenable rendition of another Y.M.O. (Yellow Magic Orchestra) song. Hit the “source” link to hear a live performance, which is a lot less coherent.
The Y.M.O. is just one of the components of Kaseo’s army of cyborg Pikachus. He also has a spikey Bent Pikachu Limited Edition, whose squeals have been turned into reasonably evil-sounding industrial-esque noise.

Atlus sent out bad news for people earnest to start making dungeons: Master of the Monster Lair, the American release of Global A’s Dungeon Maker, has been delayed from its September 2 release date to October 21. This is, of course, only an inconvenience to those hoping to make dungeons on the DS and then share them wirelessly with friends. You remain free to build your own dungeons in real life, provided you have the capital and make sure to obtain the proper permits for construction.
New screens are in the gallery, so grab your magic shovel and start digging through them!

Although GPS will be coming to American systems by this holiday season, one other peripheral may not see the light of day. The PSP camera seems unlikely to come to the US, due to its low capabilities. According to Siliconera, a SCEA representative told them that the 1.3 megapixel camera peripheral simply isn’t powerful enough to compete against other devices, such as camera phones. Unless there are actual EyeToy games to support a PSP camera, there’s very little reason to bring the camera over to the US.
For now, it appears that those interested in getting the PSP camera will have to import Chotto Shot.

Shane Kim knows (and he know we know) that Microsoft has had some problems in the MMO department, and he even takes the full blame, saying “It’s a aggressive and challenging space that’s evolving all the time - a lot of shifting sands. We haven’t been able to crack the code.” Listen, Kim (can we call you Kim?) we can sympathize. Lord knows we burned through enough cash on our ill-fated lifeguard MMO Endless Deep End. And though we can’t help you crack the whole code, we can bid an important first step to MMO success: Release one.
We know, it’s a small thing, but you’d be surprised how many miss this important step. Though we’re giving him a hard time, we’re betting NCsoft wishes they’d had a Shane Kim on staff when Auto Assault was being workshopped. “Everyone please abandon the room,” he’d say, as he loaded his syringe and slipped on rubber gloves, Auto Assault huddling in the corner. “And for the love of God, whatever you hear, do not come in.“

The Brainy Gamer has an interesting op/ed piece, in which the author states that youths of today aren’t interested in the puzzles that come along with adventure games. While crotchety old veterans like ourselves (who were actually alive when games like Monkey Island flooded shelves) still enjoy the genre, younger gamers don’t have the patience and just don’t see the point.
We’re inclined to agree a bit, as adventure gaming has become a lot more niche than it was in the past. We would argue, however, that the DS has been doing a good job of reviving such puzzlers, even for younger fans desire more action. With the touchscreen making point-and-click (or point-and-touch, if you will) much more accessible, not to allude the added award of portability, we think adventure games reach more than just a veteran gamer demographic. Maybe that’s just wishful thinking on our part, but we wouldn’t be surprised to see young teens popping in a copy of Phoenix Wright or Professor Layton.
What do you think, though? Are we just too oldschool and stubborn to let the genre lay to rest? Maybe those of you with younger siblings might have more insight when it comes to the patience of the younger set of gamers.

Everyone has an opinion - especially when it comes to which games at this year’s E3 were the very best. IGN voiced its yesterday; today we have the results of what we’re sure was heated voting at 1UP, GameTrailers, and G4’s X-Play. Okay, we’re not totally sure the voting was heated, but we can only imagine it was given the chairs thrown voices raised around here over our nominees (you don’t even want to know what went down during the selection of our winners).
We’ve got the results after the break. Discuss.

Looks like we’re not the only ones that thought LittleBigPlanet was the best PS3 exclusive at E3 this year. In fact, many other outlets are proclaiming it the Game of the Show. 1UP declared Media Molecule’s upcoming platformer “Game of the Show,” while Resistance 2 earned “Best Shooter” and inFAMOUS earned “best trailer.” “Best New Game”? MAG.
G4 gave its award for Best PS3 Game to inFAMOUS … while it gave away top accolades to LittleBigPlanet as the best game of E3. However, Gametrailers chose to disagree with the rest of the bunch though, calling Resident Evil 5 their Best of E3.
If it wasn’t apparant already, these repeated nods from critics should make one thing very clear: LBP is awesome — we can’t wait for all of you to get your hands on it too!

You would think DS, no? That’s exactly what we thought, as the handheld is home to more amazing third-party games than any other console in recent memory, but that is not the case. It turns out, the SNES was the best Nintendo console for third-party publishers. Who would’ve known?
Keep in mind, though, that this is merely based on Aeropause’s own evaluation and may not be representative of how much money publishers made on each system, or the quality of the titles they released on said platform. It’s more or less based on an article in the latest Nintendo Power where the staff ranked their top 20 games for each Nintendo system.
What do you all think? Which Nintendo system had the greatest batch of stellar third-party titles in your eyes? We’re going to stick with DS. It seems like a no-brainer to us.
