You might be wondering exactly how Visceral Games managed to get a level themed after “Violence” into Dante’s Inferno — a game where the lead character spends roughly 100% of his time killing anything near him. We were wondering too, and so it was really nice of Visceral Games and EA to release the above dev diary for the “month of violence” that the game’s marketing campaign is currently embracing to promote the game’s level based on the seventh circle of Hell.
The real question now: what can we expect EA’s marketing team during this month’s theme? We’re not sure just yet, but given its recent track record, we’re hoping no one goes to our Editor-in-Chief’s house to give him a lesson or two in violence.

EA has released two new screenshots for its upcoming RPG, Mass Effect 2, both showcasing the Engineer combat class. Developer Bioware was kind enough to reveal the Engineers earlier this week in a new trailer for the game, which you can watch here.

Mass Effect 2 will be available early next year, on the 26th of January in North America and the 29th of January in Europe.

Sure, Capcom’s vertical-shootin’, UFO-jackin’, jetpack-flyin’ third-person shooter Dark Void won’t be landing on retail shelves until January 12, but the developer wants you to spend some time with Will (and The Void) beforehand. If you head over to JetpackAttack.com, you can create and play levels in your browser of a significantly pared down Dark Void spinoff game, Jetpack Attack.
After blasting our way through the first level, we didn’t exactly find ourselves thirsting for more, though it did (no matter how small the scale) sate our urge for some jetpacking action. And hey, if worse comes to worse, you could always trade it in for gold, right?

Though Assassin’s Creed 2 has been enjoying near-universal praise from critics, apparently some folks have taken umbrage with the game’s intro as it pertains to Ezio before he becomes a calculated killing machine. When VG247 recently asked the game’s writer, Corey May, how he felt about that complaint, he told them that “it was necessary to spend time with Ezio as a carefree adolescent.”
While he admitted that the development team could have “refined the sequence so that it either moved faster or provided the player with more action-oriented activities,” he remained steadfast that “it needed to be more than a token five minutes.” May said the developers will try to “sharpen” the experience next time around, but even if the execution may have been perceived by some as less than perfect, “the idea of the beginning of the game” is what mattered most to him.
We’re behind you, Mr. May. Stabbing dudes sure is a ton of fun, but a little bit of context goes a long way.

BioWare has just released a new trailer for Mass Effect 2, featuring the exploits of strategic tactician “Commander Shepard the Engineer” and his murderous robot. Much like the first game, engineer class players will rely more heavily on strategery and tech management than direct confrontation.
Lead gameplay designer Christina Norman guides us through some combat-heavy gameplay, which depicts the aforementioned android aggressor along with some cool abilities, like freezing enemies on the spot and hacking mechanized enemies. Oh, Mass Effect 2, you had us at killer ‘bot.

Visceral Games and EA have today jointly announced the existence of Dead Space 2, the sequel to 2008’s excellent horror-imbued action adventure game.

The protagonist from the first entry to the franchise, Isaac Clarke, returns in the sequel, which is said to be a “thrilling action-horror experience,” while players will gain access to new tools with which to “gruesomely slice and dismember the Necromorphs.”
Also said to return is Isaac’s plasma cutter, as well as those awesome zero-G environments, while new characters and a more empowering gameplay experience are both promised as Isaac “[takes] the fight to the Necromorphs,” those hideous enemy creatures found in the first game. Executive Producer of Dead Space 2 Steve Papoutsis added:
“We’re thrilled to jump back into the series, making the next chapter in Isaac’s journey,” he said. “The infection continues to spread throughout space and our hero Isaac Clarke is the only person able to contain it. There are still loads of Necromorphs that need killing.
“In Dead Space 2, not everything is exactly as it seems. Expect plot twists that will surprise you and a huge cast of twisted, disgusting monsters that are sure to scare the daylights out of you.”
Dead Space 2 is expected to release on Xbox 360, PS3 and PC, most probably near the end of next year.
