Dave Perry: Sony has lost more on PS3 hardware than it made on PS2

Filed under:

The PS2 is unquestionably one of the greatest successes of videogaming history. However, it appears that the high manufacturing costs of Sony’s latest effort has negated all the profit they made from the PS2 hardware — at least according to developer Dave Perry, with information obtained from research firm DFC Intelligence (via 1UP). It’s estimated that the console, which cost Sony up to $260 of losses per system sold, has left Sony with a total loss of $3 billion in the PS3’s life so far.

While these figures seem rather bleak, one has to note the careful language used in the report is specifically about hardware, not software. Ultimately, Sony’s goal is to profit off of its first-party offerings, and the licensing fees imposed upon third party developers.

June NPD: Solid Snake farts in our general direction

June was the month of Sony, Sony, Sony … and DS. With the PlayStation brand achieving positive results across the board (MGS4 undoubtedly being the reason for doubling May’s PS3 figures), Microsoft picked up a small increase in sales for the Xbox 360. The DS performed spectacularly as always, and gained a massive jump in sales thanks to Guitar Hero: On Tour.

The only console on a downslide for the month was the Wii, yet it still trounced all non-Nintendo competition. It’s like those guys at school who barely even tried and still got top marks, while everyone else studied their butts off to scrape by. Ah, the mysteries of life.

  • DS: 783K 368.2K (+ 88.7%)
  • Wii: 666.7K 47.5K (- 6.6%)
  • PS3: 405.5K 218.4K (+ 116.7%)
  • PSP: 337.4K 144.7K (+ 75%)
  • X360: 219.8K 31.8K (+ 16.9%)
  • PS2: 188.8K 64.4K (+ 51.7%)

Software sales are waiting for you after the break! YA RLY!

Sony already denies PS2 games for PSN

Filed under:

Sony has already denied the rumors regarding PS2 games for the PSN. Sony’s Patrick Seybold, director of corporate communications & social media, spoke to GamePro: “I’m not sure where the image came from. At this point, we haven’t made any announcements, and there are no plans for PS2 downloadable titles on PS3.”

Take Mr. Seybold’s answer for what it’s worth — an honest sounding, and somewhat surprised, reaction. We don’t know what to take from this and perhaps we shouldn’t read into it any further as there’s nothing really left to go on. Then again, the image in question belongs to the UK store while Mr. Seybold is with SCEA … hmm. Anyway, it is an interesting response to say the least. It is a very different answer to the usual robotic auto-reply “we do not comment on rumors and speculation.”

May NPD: Buoyant

“Safe and steady” was the theme of May’s NPD figures, with no console either enjoying a majestic surge or suffering a crushing collapse — the DS simply registered a honorable if unspectacular 9% rise in hardware sales. As it turns out, that bump was timely, because it meant the console reached 20 million units sold in North America, a landmark that has now been passed in all major regions.

Of course, we could snicker at how the PSP only clinched 29% of the handheld market, and so we will.

  • Wii: 714.2K 39.1K (5.5%)
  • DS: 414.8K 37.8K (9.1%)
  • PSP: 192.7K 10.4K (5.4%)
  • Xbox 360: 188K 1.4K (0.8%)
  • PS3: 187.1K 21.6K (11.5%)
  • PS2: 124.4K 8.3K (6.7%)

Software sales are waiting past the break.

EA announces Hasbro Family Game Night for Wii, PS2

Electronic Arts has finally revealed the fruits of its recent partnership with board game evangelist Hasbro, announcing Hasbro Family Game Night, a collection of classic board games for the Wii and PlayStation 2. Shipping this fall, the game will include a wide assortment of Hasbro properties — six in all — from Battleship, Yahtzee, Boggle, and Connect Four to Sorry! and its more recent incarnation in Sorry! Sliders.

Purists will be happy to know that they’ll be able to play the classic games as they remember, though EA notes that new versions will also be included as well for those looking for a different way to play. In addition, the collection will let players build and decorate a virtual game room, earn trophies, and play various mini-games once they tire of sinking each other’s battleships. However, even with support for between two and four players, we doubt the compilation will have us tossing out our boxed favorites just yet, though at least with this game we know we’ll never have to go searching though couch cushions for missing pieces before we can play.

Blue Jackets’ Nash to front NHL 2K9

Sure he and his team may have missed the playoffs yet again and are likely fantasizing about what might have been while swinging at balls from the back nine, but that hasn’t stopped Columbus Blue Jackets’ young-yet-impressive captain Rick Nash from scoring cover duty on Take Two’s fall release of NHL 2K9. Also worthy of note from 2K is that developer Visual Concepts has “taken over” development duties for this latest game in the franchise — as opposed we assume to working in tandem with fellow studio Kush Games — and that the devs are rebuilding the title “from the ground up.”

Not to take anything away from three-time All Star Nash, but it’s still an odd choice, at least by team standings, given the Blue Jackets’ once again abysmal campaign during the 2007-08 regular season that saw the fledgling team arrange near the bottom of both the Western Conference and overall league in points. However, perhaps those who make these kinds of decisions are hoping this is the sort of voodoo that will turn Ohio’s NHL franchise around — sort of like a reverse Madden curse.

April NPD: GTA IV, Mario Kart Wii race to the top

Things that won’t surprise you

April proved to be yet another lucrative month for the ol’ gaming biz, with total industry sales reaching $1.23 billion, reports GameDaily. Software sales in particular grew to $654.7 million, an increase of 68% carried on the fine leather seats of Grand Theft Auto IV’s recently stolen convertible. Rockstar’s urban riffraff romp sold 2.85 million copies — that’s 1.85 million on Xbox 360 and 1 million on PS3 — while Nintendo’s Wii took the top spot in hardware sales. Mario Kart Wii, however, had to adjust for second place.

Things that will surprise you

It was a photo finish for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, but the photographers had likely packed up and left for the day by the time the steeds reached the finish line. Selling 188K and 187.1K units respectively, the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 were thoroughly bested by the systems that didn’t have GTA IV. We’d feel a bit silly if we were them.

- Wii: 714.2K 6.8K (0.94%)
- DS: 414.8K 283.2K (40.6%)
- PSP: 192.7K 104.3K (35.1%)
- Xbox 360: 188K 74K (28.2%)
- PS3: 187.1K 69.9K (27.2%)
- PS2: 124.4K 91.6K (42.4%)

You’ll find the top ten in software sales after the break.
