December 16th, 2009 at 02:45pm Under PS3

Click to start the unboxing.

Japanese gamers are braving the cold right now, waiting on line to pick up Final Fantasy XIII. Square Enix and Sony have partnered up to create a limited edition bundle that includes a copy of the game, a white controller, and a pink Lightning-emblazoned 250GB PS3 Slim system.

It’s unlikely this system will ever be officially released outside of Asia. Unless you’re looking to do some import shopping, these pics from Joystiq Japan’s Ittousai are the closest you’ll get to owning the first-ever special edition PS3 Slim.

Assassin’s Creed 2 DLC detailed: fills in missing chapters, adds ’spring-jump’

December 16th, 2009 at 01:20pm Under PS3

Though we had little more than names to go on before, Ubisoft let some details slip today about the two forthcoming chunks of Assassin’s Creed 2 DLC, due at the end of January and end of February respectively. In “Battle of Forli” ($3.99), you’ll defend Forli (surprise) from the Orsi brothers with the aid of Machiavelli and Caterina Sforza. With six new memories, the DLC will allow you to “accomplish a daring rescue and prevent the Piece of Eden from falling into the hands of the Templars.” Also, the flying machine is back!

In “Bonfire of the Vanities” ($4.99), you and Machiavelli will free Florence from “the grip of the mad monk Savonarola” by offing his underlings in ten memories. There’s also a new district of Florence, and a new move for Ezio: the spring-jump, as if his similarity to Luigi wasn’t already striking enough.

As many have speculated, the two additions fill in the missing sequences (12 and 13) from the game, meaning the DLC is a great buy for people who love murder and people with obsessive-compulsive disorder.

God of War 3 fan video contest offers signed ‘Ultimate’ editions

December 16th, 2009 at 12:00pm Under PS3

Here’s a challenge from the gods: the Playstation Blog has challenged followers to putt their dignity on the line to win one of 20 copies of the God of War III Ultimate Edition, signed by the development team. All you have to do is make a video that encapsulates your love for the game and explains why you deserve to open Pandora’s Box. Creativity is important — though we’re sure they’ll give bonus points for embarrassment. Not everyone can pull off that buff Kratos kosplay, you know …

The top 20 submissions will also be included in the credits of God of War: Unearthing the Legend, “a full-length movie documentary depicting the history of the God of War franchise.” Check out the video for the contest after the break to gain some inspiration.

PSP Digital Comics launching in US, UK, other territories today

December 16th, 2009 at 11:55am Under PS3

The PSP Digital Comics store will launch in several countries today. According to a PSNComics tweet, the US will receive access at noon Pacific time (3PM EST). The European PlayStation Blog states the comics store will open at 5PM GMT in the UK, Ireland (technical issue), Australia, New Zealand and South Africa.

The system will supposedly launch with hundreds of comics from Marvel, IDW, Titan, iVerse and 2000AD. Everything that’s available should be listed on playstationcomics.com after launch. We’re definitely looking forward to taking the service for a test drive with that “free comics” button.

Famitsu: Mega Man 10 coming to Xbox 360 and PS3

December 16th, 2009 at 01:15am Under PS3

Like its predecessor, the upcoming retro-inspired Mega Man 10 appears to be destined for a multiplatfom release. Although originally discovered on Nintendo’s WiiWare release calendar, the latest issue of Famitsu lists the upcoming Capcom downloadable on Sony’s PlayStation Network and Microsoft’s Xbox Live Arcade.

The news is rather unsurprising, but any excuse to use this exquisite Sheep Man fan art is good to us!

[Thanks, sacra!]

BioShock 2 Cult of Rapture site hangs its ‘Subject Delta’

December 15th, 2009 at 10:00pm Under PS3

Bringing to a close the BioShock 2 “Artist Series” over at the Cult of Rapture website is the image seen above, dubbed “Subject Delta.” Painted by Julie Bell and Boris Vallejo, the piece epitomizes the little we know about the upcoming game, with Splicers looking more gruesome than ever and a flood of ocean water just moments from washing everything away. Oh, and dear Little Sister, please stop staring right through us. That’s just creepy.

Check out the wallpaper-sized version, right here.

Watch streaming game trailers on Life with PlayStation

December 15th, 2009 at 08:30pm Under PS3

Life With PlayStation, Sony’s updated Folding@Home app just got a cool new expansion today. With update 1.20, cancer-stopping PS3 owners will be able to watch streaming full-screen game trailers while the PS3 chugs away, unfolding proteins. The experience is rather sleek and videos load almost instantly, taking advantage of the same streaming player that “What’s New” and the PlayStation Store both use.

It appears the content is automatically gathered from the PlayStation Store, and it allows you to watch all the available content in a single continuous stream. While we don’t see this feature being used too often, it’s perfect for those GameStop employees that want to have video looping on their PS3 kiosks.

[Thanks, marcus]

Watch Bayonetta nab enemy weapons, add insult to injury

December 15th, 2009 at 08:15pm Under PS3

Being the stylish, fashion-way-forward gal she is, Bayonetta (of, um, Bayonetta) likes to accessorize. Sometimes she gets tired of having guns for shoes and hair that can take the form of giant demons, so she politely barrows steals weapons from her enemies, to use against … her enemies.

In this short-but-sweet clip from next month’s Platinum Games action spectacle, we get to watch her do just that — nabbing a giant mace (not of the “spray into a mugger’s eyes” type) and use a very long, forcefully procured spear to pole-dance-kick the hell out of heavenly foes. Best of all, the clip is narrated by a velvety-voiced English woman who sounds just like Bayonetta, if she were real. Which she’s not — so please, stop calling Sega asking for her number. Yes, we’re onto you.

Battlefield: Bad Company 2 beta racks up 45m kills

December 15th, 2009 at 08:00pm Under PS3

“You’ll never make anything of your life just sitting around playing video games!”

You’ve heard this tired speech from your mom and dad so many times you could recite it from memory, but you can’t help but smile whenever they repeat it. Because deep down in your heart, you know that as one of the 300,000-plus people playing the Battlefield: Bad Company 2 beta, you’ve helped rack up 1.01 million headshots, destroyed 380,000 houses and been responsible for more than 45 million kills. That, friends, is something real.

So next time your parents hassle you about some benign chore, just hold your head up high and say, “Sorry I didn’t lock the wheels on the baby’s walker, Mom and Dad. I was a little busy making a difference.”
