Greenpeace: Sony is ’significantly greener’ than Microsoft or Nintendo

Filed under:

Greennpeace, an environmental organization, had put together a report on how environmentally friendly a number of leading companies are. Each company is given a score out of a possible 45 points, the higher the score is, the greener the company is deemed. Included in them are the big three video game manufacturers: Sony received a 24/45, compared to Microsoft’s score of 15/45 and Nintendo’s abysmally low score of 4/45.

So why does Sony deserve the higher score? Speaking to Edge Online, Greenpeace’s toxics campaigner Iza Kruszewska cites a number of reasons, including high marks for “chemical management and take-back initiatives.” Sony is the first company to introduce a take-back recycling program for all their products in the US, according to Kruszewska.

But what about all those reports which indicate each PS3 uses as much power as a fridge? Kruszewska admits they are true, but reminds us that “there is a wider picture to look at than just the power consumption of a console.” He offers this in the PS3’s defense: “If you look at the graphics processor that your PS3 or 360 will have, it’s hard to put them into exactly the same classification [as the Wii]. I mean, the PS3 is being used by universities globally when they have lots of number crunching to do because it’s that powerful. We’re talking about a 9-core processor here.”

Well, there you have it, environmentally-conscious boys and girls — now you know the PS3 is Mother Earth’s console of choice.

Reeves: PS3 is ‘300,000 units ahead of Xbox 360′ in PAL territories

Filed under:

SCEE president David Reeves has revealed that internal Sony numbers indicate the PlayStation 3 is “300,000 units ahead of Xbox 360″ in the PAL territories. This is in response to Microsoft claims that the 360 is outselling the PS3 in Europe. Note that both statements can be true: the 360 could be outselling the PS3 in the recent months but the total tally would show that Sony’s console is still ahead.

Furthermore, Reeves disclosed to MCVUK that there are no price cuts planned for the near future. “No we are not going to go down in price; neither are we going to go down in price on PS3 in spring time either.” This echoes what SCEE told Eurogamer late last month. “As soon as we got the manufacturing price down on PSOne we lowered the price. Same with PS2. But we’re not doing that on PS3 — that’s not the model, even if people are expecting it.” Read his full statement here.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, Guitar Hero 5 and Tony Hawk announced

Filed under:

[Update: Activision tells Videogamer that MTV's report is "speculative as far as we're concerned." Yeah, sure.]

MTV Multiplayer reports that at a Massive (Microsoft-owned advertising firm) event yesterday in New York City, Activision Blizzard revealed a number of sequels to their popular franchises, such as Guitar Hero 5 and a successor to Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. The sequel will be named … Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. And here we thought they were going to do away with the numbers! Unfortunately, no gameplay details were mentioned for either title.

Finally, it sounds the rumors we heard earlier during the summer might be true: a Tony Hawk game is scheduled for release in October that “you’re not going to be playing … with a controller in your hands.”

Gamestation cutting prices daily in December

Filed under:

Have you noticed? Games are pretty expensive. Especially when they all drop at once like they do around this time of year. UK retailer Gamestation is doing its best to allow you to experience as many games as possible, for the lowest price. Every day in December it will be running a different deal on a specific game as part of its “Advent Calendar” promotion.

Each deal lasts only 24 hours, so keep checking the site each morning for some cheap gaming gems. Plus, the company has recently announced that it has dropped delivery charges, keeping its prices even more competitive in line with Play.com and GAME. Today’s deal is for Bethesda’s post-apocalyptic wonderland title, Fallout 3, which you can pick up for just south of £20. Pretty good deal if you ask us, but like we say it’ll only be that price for today, so don’t hesitate. We’ll do our best to update you with any other must-buy deals as they happen.

Here’s an early look at the Trophies for the hotly anticipated PS3-exclusive shooter. As you can see, most are for the single-player campaign — but the multiplayer ones are worth a lot of XP, and will take quite a bit of time to get! Good luck.

European PSN releases for December 4th

Bunch of playable content in this week’s European PSN Store update. A couple of full PSN games, PS1 games and even a demo for those of you who might be suffering from a cash flow problem. There’s also the normal amount of add-on content, though no sign of pay-for LittleBigPlanet costumes, which strikes us as odd. Shoot! continues this week with “Hands” which will hopefully be much better than last week’s pretty awful offering. Here’s the full list:

Playable Content

  • GTI Club+ full game (£9.99)
  • Brain Challenge full game (£3.99)
  • Red Alert Retaliation PS1 game (£3.99)
  • Jet Rider PS1 game (£3.99)
  • LEGO Batman demo (free)

Add-on Content

  • Race Driver GRID “8-ball” pack (£6.29)
  • LittleBigPlanet “Kabuki Actor” costume (free)
  • SoulCalibur IV “Customization Equipment 4″ pack (£0.79)
  • Star Wars: The Force Unleashed “Jedi Temple” mission pack (£7.99)
  • Star Wars: The Force Unleashed “Character pack 2″ (£3.99)

Catan coming to PS3, courtesy of Game Republic

Filed under:

The classic board game, Catan, is set to arrive on the PlayStation Network soon. This will be an original version of the game (not a port of the XBLA title), and is helmed by Game Republic, developers of Genji and Folklore. The download is scheduled to hit Japan on December 18th for 1200 yen. The game will expand to other territories, although a release date has not been set.

Although only one player will be supported offline, the online multiplayer mode will allow for four players to go against each other. Surprisingly, the board game will feature both 1080p graphics and 5.1 surround sound.

[Thanks, Geb B.!]

PS3 version of Mirror’s Edge to get free award DLC

Filed under:

EA and DICE have announced details on Mirror’s Edge DLC. In late January, players will be able to download nine new races for the Time Trial mode. According to the press release, these levels will have “no guns, no cops, and no city: this is true aesthetics, agility and flow that will challenge any runner.” We’re not entirely sure what that means, but we certainly want to find out.

The nine new races will cost $10. However, PS3 owners get a special treat. All owners of the game can download an additional tenth race for free from the PlayStation Store. This is the PS3-exclusive DLC we’ve been waiting to hear about. (Who doesn’t like free stuff?)

Stay tuned for more details on the DLC. To read our review of Mirror’s Edge, click here.

No Doubt’s Singles Collection hitting Rock Band DLC next week

Filed under:

The American punk-ska band No Doubt is bringing some of their best tracks to the Rock Band series. At least, according to a posting on the band’s official website. The website states that “The Singles Collection” album will be coming to Rock Band on December 9 (probably December 11 for PS3 owners) and will include 13 tracks from the album. Funny thing is, the album has 15 tracks. So what two songs are being cut? We don’t know yet, but you can check the full song list after the break.

[Thanks Wes!]
