At those prices, you’ve got no reason not to buy one of these for your dearest friends and family. Sony’s Koller calls ‘motion control, 3D gaming, PSN’ focal points of 2010

December 16th, 2009 at 01:45pm Under PSP

After a strong 2009, Sony plans to focus its efforts in the coming year on some new initiatives — notably the still unnamed and, with a “Spring 2010 release,” curiously under-promoted PlayStation Motion Controller, 3D games, and the PlayStation Network. In a recent GamePro interview, Sony marketing head John Koller said the company will be focusing on these “three big pillars” going forward, and detailed its plans to expand on each. “I think the areas that are going to be really critical to our success will be family games, as well as shooters and sports games … they’re areas that quite honestly, I think Project Natal and the Wii are going to have trouble matching,” he said of the company’s motion controller plans.

Without getting too specific, the PlayStation Network will apparently be seeing the addition of “a number of very critically demanded features” in the coming year, while the company strives to reach day-and-date release parity between UMD-based PSP games and their digital counterparts from third-party devs on PSN. He even teased the concept of “placing you as a consumer into the game physically” — an idea he called “the Holy Grail of gaming.” We get the feeling 2010 is going to be kind of a weird year, folks.

Dead or Alive Paradise coming to PSP, sans fighting (and volleyball)

December 16th, 2009 at 02:00am Under PSP

Do you love the Dead or Alive franchise? Do you wish Tecmo would just get rid of all that pesky fighting and volleyball gameplay and give fans what they really want out of the franchise: quality alone time with the DoA girls? Thankfully, Tecmo has answered that call. Seriously.

The latest issue of Famitsu reveals a new Dead or Alive game for PSP called Dead or Alive Paradise. However, this isn’t a new game in Tecmo’s franchise. In fact, it’s barely a game at all. The Examiner notes that this is a port of a mobile game, one which lets you play mini games with the girls, as you continue to purchase skimpier and skimpier outfits for them. Classy.

Paradise is scheduled for a Spring 2010 release in Japan and, thankfully, it’s a single-player only experience. We’d hate to think what kind of terrible multiplayer modes Tecmo would imagine for a game like this.

IDW adding audio commentary to PSP comics

December 15th, 2009 at 05:15pm Under PSP

According to a tweet by comic publisher IDW, we won’t just read comics on the PSP, we’ll hear them as well. At least we’ll hear people talking about them. “Editing more audio tracks from @Templesmith (Ben Templesmith) for Wormwood on the PSP,” one tweet noted. A subsequent message clarified the nature of the audio: “Recording more @Templesmith commentaries tonight.”

The official PlayStation Digital Comics Twitter account (yes, we’re sourcing another tweet) pointed out the note, saying “I’m so pleased IDW are taking advantage of the optional audio sound track(s) available to publishers.” We agree — it’s nice to know that the PSP Digital Comics service will add something to the medium beyond a different interface.

The PSP has had an up-and-down year, with the highlight being the release of the PSP Go and the lowlight being the price of the PSP Go. It’s the handheld we all want but can’t afford. Kind of like the iPhone in South Africa. Meanwhile there has been some great content out on the PSP this year. Here is a list of 8 of the best.

Science: Uncharted 2 is the best game of 2009

December 14th, 2009 at 09:30pm Under PSP

Who says so? Science says so. Just look at the numbers in this Metacritic round-up of the year’s top games and it’s pretty obvious that Uncharted 2 is the best. Also, according to math, the PS3 is better than the 360. This isn’t us or even Metacritic saying it, people, these are innocent, irrefutable numbers.

In all seriousness, while Metacritic has collected some interesting, worthwhile data in its report, we’re not sure what the point is in trying to pick the best system or game of 2009 just going by statistics. We’ve relied on numbers just to help us organize our annual Game of the Year selection, and even so, just look how much damage they were still capable of.

UFC Undisputed 2010 trailer reminds us of MJ, makes us sad

December 13th, 2009 at 03:00pm Under PSP

Aww, we were having such a good time watching last night’s Spike Video Game Awards show — then the trailer for the recently dated UFC Undisputed 2010 aired, and really soured our enjoyment of the event. See, the first minute of the video utilizes the transformative special effects featured in Michael Jackson’s “Black or White” music video, so immediately we started thinking about how this would be our first Christmas without MJ in our lives. Nothing could revive our good spirits after that. Not even Kimbo Slice’s beard, which may be filled with hidden candies.

Check out the trailer after the jump above, but feel free to skip to the 0:52 mark if you want to avoid the melancholy described above. Alternatively, skip to the 1:01 mark if you want to witness Kimbo’s glorious, confection-rich facial hair.

PSP Holiday Gift Guide

December 11th, 2009 at 10:00pm Under PSP

Jump to a section:

Hardware | Games | Accessories

If you’re looking for a portable gaming console that can do more than just play games, the PSP’s your guy. It can play movies and music, both of which can be downloaded from the PlayStation Network right through the device. Don’t fret — it does still play video games. We’ve listed some of our favorites below.

Hardware

Sony PSP Gran Turismo Bundle – $199.99 [compare prices]
Sony PSP Limited Edition Assassin’s Creed Bundle – $199.99 [compare prices]
These two bundles both contain everything you need to start playing, including the system itself, a memory card for saving games, a protective case, a charger, vouchers for downloadable movies, and a voucher for 10 downloadable songs off of the Sony music store. The only difference? One comes with Gran Turismo, a racing title, while the other comes with Assassin’s Creed: Bloodlines, an action title. We trust you can figure out which one comes with which. Neither of these games are particularly amazing, but these bundles are only $30 more than the core system, and come with enough extras to justify the slightly larger price.

PSP Go – $249.99 [compare prices]
Unless your loved one requested this model by name, we’d advise against picking up a PSP Go at the moment. It’s far more expensive than the other model, and with no disc drive to speak of, it relies solely on downloading games from the PlayStation Network in order to play. These downloaded games aren’t any cheaper than their real-life counterparts, and sometimes even get released later than their retail iterations. Until Sony makes the offer more appealing, we suggest going with one of the above two old school PSP bundles.
Games

Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories – $19.99 [compare prices]
Another portable adaptation of a popular home console franchise that made the trip to the PSP beautifully. Liberty City Stories and similarly priced follow-up Vice City Stories both recreate the crime-based action of GTA without losing too much visual fidelity or control capability in translation.

God of War: Chains of Olympus – $19.99 [compare prices]
Rarely is there this much consensus when deciding upon a platform’s best game: If you’re getting a PSP, get Chains of Olympus. It’s an utterly amazing game, and a brilliant way of showing off the handheld’s technical strengths.

Half-Minute Hero – $29.99 [compare prices]
Though probably not the type of RPG you’re used to, Half-Minute Hero is an extremely enjoyable, quirky game for folks with severely limited attention spans.

Jeanne D’Arc – $28.99 [compare prices]
A lengthy, story-driven turn-based strategy RPG that follows the life of Joan of Arc. That is, if Joan of Arc possessed a magical bracer that transformed her into an angelic warrior. So yeah, they’ve taken a few liberties.

LittleBigPlanet – $39.99 [compare prices]
Though it may lack the tight controls of its home console predecessor, LittleBigPlanet on the PSP is a well-made, family-friendly title that can keep players entertained for days, regardless of age.

Lumines II – $19.99 [compare prices]
While it’s not the easiest game on the platform to locate, Lumines II and its predecessor are both solid puzzle games with trance-inducing music and sharp visuals.

Patapon – $19.99 [compare prices]
Further propagating the stereotype that the PSP plays host to really weird games, Patapon is a rhythm/RPG/strategy game in which you control an army of creatures using rhythmic button presses. It’s as fun as it is bizarre.

Ratchet & Clank: Size Matters – $19.99 [compare prices]
If you’re looking for a solid 3D platformer, you can’t do much better than Ratchet & Clank. Their PSP outing is one of the best action-adventure games on the platform, and with an E10+ rating, is a bit more suitable for the crowd that’s too young for Chains of Olympus.

Rock Band Unplugged – $19.99 [compare prices]
Sure, it lacks the instrument-shaped peripherals of the other versions of Rock Band, but Unplugged still has a wide music library to choose from, and accessible note-matching gameplay.

Tekken 6 – $39.99 [compare prices]
The PSP isn’t exactly jam-packed with quality fighting games, but Tekken 6 helps make up for the void. No corners were cut in bringing this multiplatform brawler to a portable format.

Wipeout Pure – $14.99 [compare prices]
One of the platform’s launch games, but still one of the best racing games on the platform. It’s fast-paced, addictive and, best of all, eye-searingly beautiful to look at.

Accessories

8GB Memory Stick PRO Duo – $34.99 (estimated) [compare prices]
16GB Memory Stick PRO Duo – $59.99 (estimated) [compare prices]
If the person your shopping for wants to download games from the PlayStation Store (and, by all means, they should), you’ll need some extra storage space. These two memory sticks, though pricey, should have all the space any PSP owner could possibly need.

PSP Remote Control/Headphones – $24.99 [compare prices]
They’re a little extravagant, but if you’re hoping to use the PSP as a multimedia machine, it helps to have this pair of remote control-equipped headphones.

BlazBlue PSP fires up a new trailer

December 11th, 2009 at 07:30pm Under PSP

One of the best fighting games of this generation is coming to PSP. After watching this new trailer for BlazBlue, we were surprised to see how well the game’s HD visuals have been translated for Sony’s handheld. It appears the handheld version of the game will add a few new features — Legion and Shop modes — but most importantly, we’d want the gameplay to work on PSP’s admittedly restrictive control setup.

Check out the new trailer after the break.
