Greenpeace: Sony is ’significantly greener’ than Microsoft or Nintendo

Filed under:

Greennpeace, an environmental organization, had put together a report on how environmentally friendly a number of leading companies are. Each company is given a score out of a possible 45 points, the higher the score is, the greener the company is deemed. Included in them are the big three video game manufacturers: Sony received a 24/45, compared to Microsoft’s score of 15/45 and Nintendo’s abysmally low score of 4/45.

So why does Sony deserve the higher score? Speaking to Edge Online, Greenpeace’s toxics campaigner Iza Kruszewska cites a number of reasons, including high marks for “chemical management and take-back initiatives.” Sony is the first company to introduce a take-back recycling program for all their products in the US, according to Kruszewska.

But what about all those reports which indicate each PS3 uses as much power as a fridge? Kruszewska admits they are true, but reminds us that “there is a wider picture to look at than just the power consumption of a console.” He offers this in the PS3’s defense: “If you look at the graphics processor that your PS3 or 360 will have, it’s hard to put them into exactly the same classification [as the Wii]. I mean, the PS3 is being used by universities globally when they have lots of number crunching to do because it’s that powerful. We’re talking about a 9-core processor here.”

Well, there you have it, environmentally-conscious boys and girls — now you know the PS3 is Mother Earth’s console of choice.

Forza Motorsport 2 experts drift into gear

Filed under:

Only a few people can claim to be experts at any game. In the world of Forza Motorsport 2, Project Blackjack are experts. One year in the making, The Rising Storm showcases some of the most incredible precision drifting we’ve ever seen in any game. The team of twelve gamers from around the world compiled the nearly 10 minute montage in hopes to showcase what they call, “The Art of Drifting.” We think of it as, “The Art of Insane Crap We’ll Never Come Close To Doing.”

[Thanks, JHD]

We admit it, the only reason we embedded the video above is because we knew it would make people pay attention to this post. No one ever reads these anyway. We could type almost anything in this space and no one would notice. Froodlegarb. Dunglesnout. See? Completely unnoticed. Find the latest news from X3F below, including our review of Prince of Persia and a look at Banjo Kazooie for Xbox Live Arcade. Also, dimblefippy.

Video: Banjo visit the Eiffel Tower

After the break, we bring you your random video of the day. The setup: Banjo the bear (from Banjo-Kazooie, of course) has back rent piling up, so he decides to go visit Jinjo in Paris, France. While in Paris, Banjo decides to take in the sights, visit the Eiffel Towel and wander about. Then, suddenly, he spots a Jiggy and must find a way grab the golden puzzle piece while breaking free of traditional platformer restraints. Did we allude the video is live action and features a dude in a bear costume?

Reeves: PS3 is ‘300,000 units ahead of Xbox 360′ in PAL territories

Filed under:

SCEE president David Reeves has revealed that internal Sony numbers indicate the PlayStation 3 is “300,000 units ahead of Xbox 360″ in the PAL territories. This is in response to Microsoft claims that the 360 is outselling the PS3 in Europe. Note that both statements can be true: the 360 could be outselling the PS3 in the recent months but the total tally would show that Sony’s console is still ahead.

Furthermore, Reeves disclosed to MCVUK that there are no price cuts planned for the near future. “No we are not going to go down in price; neither are we going to go down in price on PS3 in spring time either.” This echoes what SCEE told Eurogamer late last month. “As soon as we got the manufacturing price down on PSOne we lowered the price. Same with PS2. But we’re not doing that on PS3 — that’s not the model, even if people are expecting it.” Read his full statement here.

Nyko’s ‘Metal Petal’ for RB and GHWT takes licking, keeps kicking

Have you be cursed with the world’s heaviest feet? Do you abandon footprints in cement? Do you go through Rock Band or Guitar Hero bass pedals like tissue paper? If you answered yes to the third question, Nyko has your solution, the Metal Pedal. The pedal is compatible with Guitar Hero: World Tour as well as both the original Rock Band and Rock Band 2 and is metal plated to stand up to your torturous kicking. Unfortunately, the Metal Pedal isn’t hitting stores until January 2009, so you’ll have to wait a bit before you can fork over the $20 price tag. Of course, as Joystiq notes, you could always try the DIY alternative, the Pedal Metal.

Now, if you answered yes to the first two questions, well, you’re on the wrong website. Sorry.

Riddick debut trailer is dark, gravelly

Filed under:

“The darkness, to me, is where I shine,” says Vin Diesel as Riddick, his greatest character (apart from the Iron Giant, of course). While it’s clear that his daily breakfast of Gravel-Os probably ruined his chances at a singing career, it’s also conspicuous that Riddick has a bright future in killing people with knives. Put bluntly (sharply?), The Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena looks great, as is made plainly clear by the debut trailer above. Given that the game is being made by the same team that made the original (which fared very well), we’re hopeful that it plays just as good as it looks. We’ll find out when the game ships early next year.

Activision: COD 6, Tony Hawk, Guitar Hero 5 talk ’speculative’

Filed under:

Following reports taken directly from an upfront with Massive Inc. that sequels were on the way for Tony Hawk, Call of Duty — specifically, a follow-up to Modern Warfare — and Guitar Hero, and that a new Bond game is in the works, Activision informed VideoGamer.com that such reports are “speculative.” In other words, Activision declined to confirm the projects it confirmed only yesterday. In other news, when asked whether or not it intended to poop in the woods, a bear told us that such reports were “speculative.” The Pope also declined to confirm whether or not he wears a funny hat.

Ghostbusters trailer asks who you should telephone

Filed under:

click to embiggen

Atari has released some new screenshots and a new trailer of Ghostbusters (cleverly subtitled The Video Game). The trailer is devoid of gameplay and looks to be made entirely of pre-rendered cut-scenes. Still, it’s affable to see faithfully rendered character models for Peter, Ray, Egon, and Winston (and even Walter Peck, no less) and it’s even better to hear the voices of the original cast. Apparently, the story for the game centers around the ghost dimension coalescing with ours (still no word if any Mortal Kombat or DC characters are jumping through the rift yet). Find the trailer after the break and check out the new screens in the gallery below.
