After the extended bidding and acquisition process surrounding Square Enix’s buy-out of the UK-based Eidos Interactive, the deal has now come to a close with the formal rebranding of Eidos as Square Enix Europe.

Square Enix Europe represents “the unified business unit” that comprises sales and marketing offices in the UK, France and Germany, which will handle the promotion of the group’s games across Europe and PAL territories, as well as the management of the company’s developers including Crystal Dynamics, IO Interactive, Beautiful Game Studios, Square Enix London Studios and Eidos Montréal.
President and chief executive officer of Square Enix Europe, Phil Rogers said of the announcement: “Today marks a major achievement towards the goals we announced in July and represents the creation of an efficient and powerful structure for game development and publishing.
“We have a formidable product-line up which truly showcases the diversity of our exceptional gaming brands.”
Square Enix now has access to a multitude of franchises brimming with future potential previously under the ownership of Eidos, including Tomb Raider, Hitman and Deus Ex, adding to their own considerable line-up spearheaded by the likes of Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest.

It’s just been jointly announced that The Walt Disney Company has agreed to acquire comic book megalith Marvel Entertainment for a whopping $4 billion in a stock and cash transaction.
The acquisition, Disney says, highlights the company’s “strategic focus on quality branded content, technological innovation and international expansion to build long-term shareholder value.”
Marvel’s Chief Executive Officer, Ike Perlmutter said of the deal: “Disney is the perfect home for Marvel’s fantastic library of characters given its proven ability to expand content creation and licensing businesses.
“This is an unparalleled opportunity,” continued Perlmutter, “for Marvel to build upon its vibrant brand and character properties by accessing Disney’s tremendous global organization and infrastructure around the world.”

President and Chief Executive Officer of The Walt Disney Company, Robert A. Iger also commented: “Ike Perlmutter and his team have done an impressive job of nurturing these properties and have created significant value. We are pleased to bring this talent and these great assets to Disney.”
As a result of this acquisition, Disney will gain access to Marvel’s enormous, 5000-strong roster of character creations, including Iron Man, Spider-Man, X-Men, Captain America, Fantastic Four and Thor.
The Board of Directors at both Disney and Marvel have approved of the acquisition, which is now subject to clearance “under the Hart-Scott-Rodino Antitrust Improvements Act, certain non-United States merger control regulations, effectiveness of a registration statement with respect to Disney shares issued in the transaction and other customary closing conditions.”
Additionally, the agreement will need the approval of Marvel shareholders before it’s made official.

Speaking during an annual conference at Microsoft’s Israeli research and development center, the head of Israel R&D and corporate VP Moshe Lichtman openly confirmed the acquisition of 3DV’s motion technology — the same motion technology speculated as being used in the company’s ambitious Project Natal. “The R&D center helped Microsoft in buying the intellectual property of 3DV Systems, and in the wake of that, dozens of the company’s employees were recruited to work at the development center,” Globes reports Lichtman said.
Though we still don’t know the amount Microsoft spent acquiring 3DV, considering the amount of marketing muscle “the big M” is putting behind Project Natal, we’re guessing it wasn’t exactly a pittance. Now, to arrange for a few sneaky Joystiq operatives in Israel to find out exactly what’s happening inside the company’s clandestine research and development offices.
