New trailer reminds us that LOTR: Aragorn’s Quest exists

December 16th, 2009 at 03:30am Under Wii / Nintendo

For the first time since the announcement of the game’s burial in the first quarter of 2010, WBIE has released new media for The Lord of the Rings: Aragorn’s Quest. In case you’ve forgotten about the upcoming Wii/DS/PS2/PSP action-RPG, it’s a kid-friendly game starring a cuddly incarnation of Viggo Mortensen’s Aragorn — and, in the Wii version, an equally huggable Gandalf (for a second player to handle).

It seems that, even though you’re in the middle of a war and hacking up thousands of monsters, the game’s been approved for kids because your avatar has big feet.

Professor Layton and the Devil’s Flute plays successfully in Japan

December 4th, 2009 at 04:00pm Under DS

[GAME Watch]

Japan’s infatuation with quaint, puzzle-filled villages has yet to wane. The second Professor Layton trilogy has started off on a positive note, with Professor Layton and the Devil’s Flute topping the Media Create sales charts. The latest in Level-5’s adventure series sold 306,000 copies in its first week at retail.

The rest of the weekly bestsellers list is almost entirely dominated by Wii and DS games, like Tomodachi Collection, Wii Fit Plus and another debut, Momotaro Dentetsu 2010!, the latest Wii release of Hudson’s Japan-only, train-themed board game series. The sole exception: Winning Eleven 2010, charting at number 7 with 20,000 copies sold. (The soccer sim’s life-to-date sales of 312,000 isn’t that far off from Layton’s first week!) Additionally, Cave’s region-free Xbox 360 shmup Mushihime-sama Futari just missed the top ten.

Phoenix Wright judged appropriate for WiiWare re-release in Japan

November 17th, 2009 at 11:05pm Under Wii / Nintendo

The latest issue of Famitsu confirms what a USK rating hinted: Phoenix Wright is coming to WiiWare. Capcom is porting the DS games (or, if you’d rather, the Game Boy Advance games) to Wii one at a time, to be released in Japan starting December 15. Judging from what we can see (which isn’t much — portions of cell phone images of screenshots), the graphics aren’t enhanced for Wii at all.

Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney will be available in Japan on December 15 for 900 Wii Points, with the two Phoenix Wright sequels following on January 26 and February 23 for 1200 Wii Points each. The original case added to the DS version of the first Ace Attorney will be out on March 16 for 300 Points.

And now begin the process of reminding ourselves that we’ve already played all of this content, and just because it’s being released again in a different format doesn’t mean we have to buy it again. The fact that no announcements have been made about a North American release should help.

Investigate a Crime Scene trailer

November 17th, 2009 at 07:45pm Under DS

Having gotten the obligatory joke out of the way in the first post about SouthPeak’s Crime Scene, we’re now free to look at, you know, the game and stuff. And it certainly delivers on the promise of the title! It’s basically a crime scene on the DS for you to explore. You have to comb through whole rooms, collecting fingerprints, footprints and other evidence. You get to tweeze – and swab.

Crime Scene is one of the few M-rated games on DS — joining an elite club comprising games like Resident Evil: Deadly Silence, the Dementiums, Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars, and, of course, Touch the Dead. With that rating, it may turn out to be a more realistic, serious take on crime than the other cop games on DS.

Investigate a Flash demo of Miles Edgeworth’s new game

November 13th, 2009 at 12:30am Under DS

Like it has for past Ace Attorney games, Capcom has prepared a demo of Ace Attorney Investigations: Miles Edgeworth. This demo seems even more relevant than past offerings, since aspects of the game other than the names on the text windows have changed. This demo will give you the opportunity to examine Edgeworth’s office with the new point-and-click interface, connect evidence with the new “Logic” system, and become impatient with Detective Gumshoe.

It doesn’t take a brilliant deductive mind with excellent taste in cravats to puzzle out that this demo contains spoilers, since it reproduces the first scene in the game. However, we suspect that you won’t be able to resist, after almost two years of no Ace Attorney games.

Rumor: Hotel Dusk sequel coming to DS in Japan early next year

November 12th, 2009 at 12:05pm Under Wii / Nintendo

The blog Sinobi seems to have found some retail listings for two new Nintendo games due in the first quarter of 2010 in Japan. Last Window: Mayonaka no Yakusoku (Last Window: Midnight Promise) is a sequel to CING’s DS adventure game, Hotel Dusk, set in Los Angeles in the 1980s. It will apparently be out in Japan on January 14!

Zangeki no Regenleiv is the Wii action game revealed in October 2008 as “Dynamic Zan” and not heard from again until just now. It’s being developed by Earth Defense Force creator Sandlot, and will include online combat for up to four players when it’s released on February 11.

All of these details are unverified, but the fact that Sinobi had the images above for both games (which may come from a retailer catalog) add some credence to the rumor.

Tecmo dates Again, dusts off Monster Rancher DS

November 10th, 2009 at 09:01pm Under DS

Tecmo just sent out a release date for Again, the latest mystery adventure game from Hotel Dusk and Trace Memory developer Cing. North American gamers will be able to watch digitized actors explore the past and get headaches from dollar bills in March 2010.

In addition, the company surprised us with another March 2010 release date for a Cing-developed DS game: Monster Rancher DS. Two DS games in Tecmo’s once-massive monster generating and collecting series came out on DS in Japan in 2007 and 2008, featuring the ability to unlock monsters by drawing on the screen or talking into the microphone, but nothing was ever said about a North American release until now. Monster Rancher DS features both local and online monster fighting, and the return of many of the nostalgic monsters you may remember from the older games, like that one with the big eye.

Ghost Trick returns to haunt us with new trailer

November 3rd, 2009 at 05:50pm Under DS

Capcom’s Ghost Trick was one of the most memorable games of TGS (in our opinion), combining a novel puzzle mechanic with a memorable style. We’ve been eagerly awaiting any new information or media that may (Ghost) trickle out, and now we’ve got a new-ish trailer to share for the 2010 release.

We say new-ish because it features the same intro animation seen in the TGS trailer. But this extended video also has brief snippets of gameplay footage, in which we can see Sissel possessing and “tricking” things like a cabinet door (to make a dog move). Check out the trailer after the break.

Shadow Walker: Boy of Shadow, Girl of Light, Trailer of Game

October 20th, 2009 at 02:30pm Under Wii / Nintendo

One week from today, Game Arts’ Shadow Walker: Boy of Shadow, Girl of Light will be released on WiiWare in Japan. To mark the occasion, Game Arts released a trailer (after the break), demonstrating its adorable character design and puzzle-based gameplay.

Okay, so Hudson’s Lost in Shadow, which isn’t on WiiWare, is about a boy who is a shadow, using other shadows as platforms and making new shadows to travel on with the help of his fairy companion. This game, which is a download, is about a boy who can only walk in shadows, and whose fairy companion helps him create shadow paths.

Despite the extremely similar premise, the gameplay looks quite different. In this game, you control only the fairy, creating paths for the boy to walk through.

Puzzling: No plans for Wii Professor Layton

October 8th, 2009 at 06:40pm Under Wii / Nintendo

Everything is improved with waggle. It’s a fact. Scientifically proven. And yet, Level 5 CEO Akihiro Hino has still seen fit to crush everyone’s hopes of a waggle-infused Professor Layton. Hino told Official Nintendo Magazine that the upcoming Professor Layton and the Last Time Travel will conclude the trilogy, though it will soon be followed by the first episode of a new trilogy, entitled Professor Layton and the Flute of Malevolent Destiny. That’s wonderful, and we’re sure handheld puzzle enthusiasts will be thrilled, but Hino notes — probably followed by a cruel, derisive laugh — that there are currently “no plans for a Wii release.”

Frankly, we’re shocked at the revelation, as a Wii release of Professor Layton seems like the mannerly, logical thing to do. We’re sure the world-famous Hershel Layton would agree.
