The average American viewed over 9 million advertising messages over the past decade — logically, a few would stick out in your mind as being better than the rest. Advertising trade publication Adweek recently voted on the best piece of video marketing to be released this decade. Two video game ads you might remember made the final nominees: “Diorama,” for Halo 3, and “Mountain,” for the PlayStation 2.
Sadly, both of these ads lost to Honda’s “Grrr” ad — if only Sony’s “Horrifying, Reverse-Weeping Baby” spot had made it into the list of nominees, the company could have brought home the gold.

The Spike VGAs this evening may very well reveal the first gameplay of upcoming MMA-er UFC Undisputed 2010, but the most recent GameStop weekly is dropping release date bombs on us well before tonight’s festivities kickoff. According to the ad, the game will be grappling onto store shelves on May 25 and, as you might imagine, you’re welcome to “pre-order now!”
While we’re normally reticent to trust release dates from retailers as absolute truth, the prominence of this information among a weekly advertisement — and the fact that the game is getting “World Premiere” treatment on tonight’s award show — puts some confidence in our normally skeptical perception of situations like this. Either way, we’re likely to confirm this report’s veracity when the VGAs roll this evening.
[Thanks Erik!]

The Guardian reports that British Intelligence is looking for a few good men. Specifically, the Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ) is running ads on the Xbox 360 dashboard and within Xbox games to recruit new members. The GCHQ, which works with both MI5 and MI6 (yes,
that MI6), seeks to recruit young people with an affinity for “quick thinking, problem solving and team work.” GCHQ believes that these criteria are “reflected in game-play experiences on Xbox.”
We’re expecting a new generation of foul-mouthed, teabagging James Bonds any day now.

Pictured: A successful commercial
Speaking during a presentation at the recent Montreal International Game Summit (as covered by Edge), EEDAR Director of Analyst Services Jesse Divnich highlighted a tenuous connection between game review scores and commercial success. In the case of Nintendo’s DS, Divnich is quoted as saying “scores don’t matter.” But do they matter among a more dedicated gaming audience?
“When we did compare Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 only games, we did, to no surprise, find that review scores highly correlated to sales,” Divnich told Joystiq. “However, marketing correlation was still just a tad bit more.” According to EEDAR’s research, marketing has played the “more crucial role” with DS games and, to some degree, Wii games (a point Nintendo’s Reggie Fils-Aime seems to agree on).
While emphasizing that his aim was not to dismiss the value of critical evaluation, Divnich suggested that marketing plays a more persuasive role in what has become a burgeoning industry. “Video games are now a mass marketed product, it is a product that targets all major demographics, very similar to television or movies or any other sector within the entertainment division.” While Joystiq readers may lock out the din of marketing as they tap the F5 key and anxiously wait for review embargoes to lift, the industry has grown to encompass people who aren’t as exposed to the likes of Metacritic.
It seems that being informed takes precedence over being entertained — at least until you start playing the game. “Quality does matter,” concluded Divnich, “but marketing matters just a little bit more.”

What you see above is the third circular image we’ve spotted in just five days advertising a Nintendo Wii price cut to $199.99. At this point, though the image that a Kotaku tipster sent in could very well be made of fancy pixel work by someone with too few extracurriculars on their schedule, we’re fairly confident in a forthcoming price cut reveal.
Considering the impending holiday season and those other consoles getting recent price drops, it seems likely something will occur with the big N in the upcoming months. If Miss Cleo’s Michael Pachter’s predictions based on slowing sales are any indication though, we’ll know soon enough.

The image above, posted by Kotaku, appears to be a Target ad for the week of September 27, featuring a $50 price drop on Wii hardware. This ad would further corroborate the Toys R Us ad we saw that also showed the same price cut — if we knew either ad was real. Us? We’re hoping for a drastic price cut on cameras so tipsters can get better pictures of these advance ads.
The DVD at the right side of the Target ad is Monsters vs. Aliens, which comes out on September 29. That at least shows that if this ad is a fake, it’s a somewhat clever one. As always, we’re not going to take this as confirmation of a price drop, but we will take it as confirmation that it would be smart to wait a couple of weeks before going to buy a Wii.

How often does a company get TV advertising for games absolutely right? There’s usually some aspect of a game’s presentation to the general audience that is groan-worthy or embarrassing — and potentially damaging to the game’s perception. That’s not the case with the Scribblenauts ad!
This live-action ad does a great job of getting the gameplay across, and presenting it in an appealing way. In fact, the events of this commercial would work as a real Scribblenauts level. Bonus points for using the real Scribblenauts art style for the summoned objects.

Microsoft’s in-game ad company, Massive, has announced that it will be providing ads for several major publishers this fall, namely THQ, EA and Activision. Massive will supply ads for EA’s sports lineup — including Madden NFL 10 — and Need for Speed: Shift. For Activision, the company will provide ads for the many upcoming Hero games, including Guitar Hero 5, DJ Hero and Band Hero, as well as Tony Hawk Ride and Blur. There will also be ads in THQ’s MX vs ATV Reflex as well as its smash hit UFC 2009: Undisputed. Also, expect ads in Ubisoft’s Splinter Cell: Conviction — projected on the walls, perhaps — when it launches next year.
Perhaps most important of all, Massive will be the exclusive provider of advertisements on Blizzard’s revamped Battle.Net when it launches alongside StarCraft II. That’s not much of a leap, as the company is the sole provider for the current Battle.Net as well. Still, we’re just guessing that there will be more than a few eyeballs pointed at Blizzard’s online playground whenever StarCraft II graces the world with its presence.

We guess a lot of sneaker lovers also enjoy racing games, because Microsoft has announced that Puma will be an exclusive marketing partner for Forza 3. The result of this partnership ensures you’ll be gawking at Puma ads throughout Forza 3 and guarantees Puma driver Natacha Gachnang will be the face of the game across Europe.
The partnership will even extend beyond the game, helping to create a Forza 3-branded Puma shoe and enveloping employees who are demonstrating Forza 3 at special promotional events leading up until its October 27 release in – you guessed it! – Puma gear. We think that’s kind of good thing though, because the last time we saw the game it was tough to understand the publicists through those big driving helmets they all had on.

GamesCom advertisements are everywhere in Cologne at the moment. Not only that, but it seems like the electronics retailers are taking advantage of the demographic currently in town. With 200,000+ attendees expected during the five-day event and GamesCom being open to the public (unlike E3 and GDC), it’s really no surprise. We typically don’t see marketing taking advantage of situations like this in the States — well, excluding really big Final Fantasy XIII ads.
Note: If you’re attending GamesCom and see interesting gaming-related ads around Cologne, drop us a line. Please make sure to put “GamesCom ads” in the subject and have the pic linked (we can’t take files, sorry) — and make sure we get your name for photo credit.
