Dante’s Inferno anime remains faithful to Visceral source

November 13th, 2009 at 10:01am Under Xbox 360

With talent from “Blood the Last Vampire” and “Ergo Proxy” (oh, and “Samauri Champloo”) involved, it should’ve been clear that “Dante’s Inferno: The Animated Epic” was going to be sickeningly violent. A newly released trailer for the straight-to-video anime spin-off reveals that this Dante’s Inferno project isn’t a single film, but rather a compilation of animated shorts, much like “The Animatrix,” “Batman: Gotham Knight” and, most recently, “Halo: Legends.”

We’re pretty certain Dante Alighieri is rolling in his grave right now, as this anthology of multiple interpretations of Visceral Games’ interpretation of the original epic poem is so very far removed from the source. But hey, it’s Alighieri’s fault for not having the foresight to write about someone’s head getting chopped in half!

Expect The Animated Epic to arrive on DVD and Blu-ray in February, the same month as the game.

An epic amount of Epic Mickey media

October 20th, 2009 at 07:30pm Under Wii / Nintendo

Game Informer’s slow trickle of Epic Mickey deets has turned into a full-on firehose today, as the site has published a massive five-page feature on the game’s environments, concept art and character animations. The feature not only talks about the developmental process for animators and designers at Junction Point Studios, but also delves into the game’s world a bit, showing off screens of the cartoon objects and inert objects populating the land. The former are things the player can create and erase in the game, whereas the latter are permanent objects in the game world that the player cannot affect.

There’s even some really odd stuff to look at — like a robotic Donald Duck and a video of Mickey Mouse shadowboxing. Looks like we can cross one item off our list of Sentences We Never Would’ve Imagined Ever Having to Write.

Flipnote Studio moving to Europe this Friday [Update: it's out in North America right now!]

August 12th, 2009 at 12:15pm Under Wii / Nintendo

[Baffling update: Hatena announced that the site and the software are available in the US and Canada today, which is totally not a Monday!]

One of the DSi’s killer apps will finally be available outside of Japan. Nintendo announced that Flipnote Studio, the DSiWare animation tool, will be released in Europe this Friday, for the price of zero DSi Points. The app, called Ugoku Memo-chou in Japan, allows users to draw “flip-book”-style animations, add sound, and share them via a special site, “Ugomemo Hatena,” run by Japanese blog service Hatena.

Delightfully, the site has already been relaunched as “Flipnote Hatena” for European users — we were a bit worried that not all aspects of the service would make it, but you’ll be able to upload your animations and watch and rate others’ right away!

For more on the development of the game and the Hatena connection, check out the “Iwata Asks” interview with staff from both Nintendo and Hatena, and a special Iwata Asks with animator Yoichi Kotabe. And after the break, see a Flipnote animation based on Rhythm Heaven’s DJ School.
