Much like the comical co-host of The Tonight Show with Conan O’ Brien, we were infuriated by Hugh Jackman’s victory in the “Best Male Voice Actor” category during last week’s Video Game Awards ceremony. That Vector Monkey was destined to land in the hands of Andy Richter, who, you may or may not know, provided the voice of Assassin’s Creed 2’s titular killer, Ezio Auditore de Firenze a Lamborghini et Manicotti Formaggio.
You can view Richter’s outburst, as well as a bit of his work in the game, in the Tonight Show clip posted on the show’s official site.

War. What is it good for? Super successful games!
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 may be undergoing a gradual sales slide, dropping another 11 percent this past week, but since the title has maintained the top position on the
UK sales chart for a fifth week, it must be sliding down on a pretty fluffy cushion.
Call of Duty: World at War held the high ground for five weeks last year before
FIFA took it during Christmas week. Speaking of
FIFA, the latest installment dropped from second to fifth this week.
Assassin’s Creed 2 couldn’t find the next grip location and holds its position in third. Nintendo has Wii Sports Resort, Wii Fit Plus and New Super Mario Bros. Wii at spots two, four and six, respectively. As for premieres, The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks rolled in at 12th place and James Cameron’s Avatar: The Game entered at number 29. Now let’s see how Avatar: The Movie That Inspired The Game does. If it’s a hit, that should help sales of the game.

If you’re one of the unlucky Assassin’s Creed 2 players who’ve been wandering around the Hideout for days, with no way to get back into the playground of Ezio’s memories, you’ll be relieved to know that a new freedom patch is on the way. It’ll launch for PS3 today and on December 11 for Xbox 360.
The patch promises to fix the Sequence 11 glitch and many others (the list may contain spoilers for you), including a bug that allows Ezio to walk on air in “extremely rare occasions.” We didn’t know about that one, but now we’re going to miss it.

There’s “No Russian” Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 off the top spot on the UK sales charts. Infinity Ward’s mega-hit is killin’ terrorists, civilians and retail at a solid tick, despite the seven percent sales drop from the prior week. The FPS has held the high ground for four weeks now, repelling solid competition from the footie fantasies of FIFA 10 and the hidden blades of Assassin’s Creed 2.
Call of Duty: World at War maintained the number one position on the charts last year for five weeks, before FIFA 09 rushed the goal and scored the top spot during Christmas week. Thanks to retail promotions, game of the year candidate Batman: Arkham Asylum sales surged 122 percent, bringing the Dark Knight back onto the chart in the twenty spot.

As if you needed another reason to love Assassin’s Creed II, the video just below the break shows that it also contains our very favorite kind of squid: a secret squid. Apparently, staring into a pool in the last chamber of the Santa Maria Delle Visitazione for just under a minute will net you a visit from the sizable cephalopod you see in the image above.
Just as a warning, the video has a couple of instances of profanity. Why you’d want to sully such a beautiful moment is, frankly, beyond us.
[Thanks, Sean!]

The Assassin’s Creed sequel may not have taken out Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 from the top spot on the UK charts, but the game did outperform the original’s 2007 debut by 12 percent in unit sales. Although Chart Track doesn’t give specific unit sales figures, it’s staggering to think that Infinity Ward’s FPS dropped 86 percent after its launch week and still retained the top spot.
Behind the big boys of violence, Nintendo’s New Super Mario Bros. Wii, Wii Sports Resort and Wii Fit Plus took the next three spots, respectively. The hardened Left 4 Dead 2 shambled up to seventh spot.

Joystiq has confirmed that the blurry video and NeoGAF forum member’s claims of a Splinter Cell Conviction demo voucher shipping inside Xbox 360 versions of Assassin’s Creed II were nothing more than an enticing balloon full of hot air. As the picture you see above reveals, copies of ACII sold by GameStop included a Splinter Cell Conviction leaflet meant to solicit pre-orders of Ubisoft’s next big game, while a similar leaflet (included in our Amazon.com copy) contains a URL and code (”CONV1C71ON”) for … ringtones and wallpapers? Yes, sad, but true. Looks like we got our hopes up for nothing, folks.
[Thanks Eric!]

Despite slow to non-existent sales for several high-profile third-party Nintendo Wii titles, the company’s US head, Reggie Fils-Aime, still believes that third-party publishers on Nintendo’s console can be successful. Speaking with Kotaku, Fils-Aime says he’s “extremely disappointed” with the lack of major third party games on the Wii. He even goes so far as to say he’s spoken (presumably quite sternly) with “every publisher who makes content that is not available on my platform” about the subject.
When questioned as to why major titles like Grand Theft Auto IV and Assassin’s Creed 2 aren’t headed to his company’s console, he explains it as a measure of long lead times rather than technological inability. “Typically decisions are being made two years prior … and so the decisions two years ago were that those types of games would not be effective on the platform.” And though the subject isn’t directly broached, Fils-Aime remains steadfast that third-party titles can be successful on the Wii … with the right marketing. “High-quality, effectively marketed against our installed base, will sell. Period. End of story.”
It would appear then that Boom Blox, The Conduit, No More Heroes, and a mess of other third-party titles, had some truly ineffective marketing by Reggie’s standards.

Just for a second, think about the pitch meeting for the first Assassin’s Creed.
“Well, he’s an assassin, right? But he doesn’t have guns or anything, instead, he’s got knives and parkour. Oh, and the game takes place in 12th Century Jerusalem. Can we have millions of dollars now?”
When you think about what a big risk Assassin’s Creed was, you could almost forgive Ubisoft if it wanted to rest on its laurels for the second game and make it a well-earned, slightly updated victory lap to celebrate having the guts to follow through on an original vision.
But worry not, friends. Ubisoft has taken the rougher but ultimately more rewarding path, and pushed the series forward so far with Assassin’s Creed II that it leaves the original looking like a mere proof of concept.

Look, Sam Fisher is a master of espionage, so it’s entirely believable the man could sneak his way into the packaging of Assassin’s Creed II this week. Heck, now that his daughter is gone, he’s thrown the rulebook out the window and part of his new anything-goes persona could very well be to synergize like he’s never done before. Thus, this rumor that all copies of Assassin’s Creed II on Xbox 360 will come with a download voucher for a Splinter Cell: Conviction demo.
One user over at NeoGAF claims a copy of Assassin’s Creed II on Xbox 360 came with said insert, while further evidence from HipHopGamer shows what appears to be the alleged insert (it’s since been removed from the original video; but Kouppa-Network Live still has it up). Logic points to the demo being the same portion of gameplay we checked out back at E3, though there’s no evidence to verify that.
We’ve contacted Ubisoft for comment and will update this post when we hear back.
