NPD: November videogame sales decrease 7.6% to $2.7 bil in US, Modern Warfare 2 sells over 6 mil

December 11th, 2009 at 02:30am Under Uncategorized

Modern Warfare 2 Box Art

While November was a blockbuster month which saw AAA titles such as Modern Warfare 2, New Super Mario Bros. Wii, Assassin’s Creed II, Left 4 Dead 2 and Dragon Age: Origins hitting shelves across the US, the latest data from US tracking firm NPD Group shows that sales of the videogame industry in the US fell by 7.6% to $2.699 billion in November.

Despite the knock-on effect that these best-selling titles had in boosting sales of their respective consoles, hardware sales also recorded a decrease this past month, down 13.4% to $1.05 billion. And even software sales suffered a 3.1% decline to $1.406 billion, while accessories dropped by 5.5% to $242.2 million.

Nintendo once again dominated the hardware side of things, with the Nintendo DS selling an impressive 1.7 million units and the Wii not too far behind with 1.26 million units. The Xbox 360 outsold the PS3, with Microsoft’s console recording sales of 819 500 units and Sony’s 710 400. The PSP followed with 293 900 units and the PS2 with 203 100.

Modern Warfare 2 dominates

As expected Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 ruled the software roost with a combined total of 6.07 million copies sold during November. The Xbox 360 version triumphed at number 1 with a whopping 4.2 million copies sold, followed by the PS3 version in second place with 1.87 million copies.

According to NPD analyst Anita Frazier, “Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 has achieved the top spot for first-month sales of any game at the title level. Halo 3 previously held the spot when it sold 3.3 million units in September ‘07 in 12 days at retail. MW2 bested Halo 3’s daily sales rate by 16% in its 19 days at retail in November.”

“While this year’s top-selling item bested last year’s by 283%, it couldn’t make up for softness elsewhere. The top 50 games this year sold 5% less units than did the top 50 last year.”

New Super Mario Bros. Wii proved that Mario still has what it takes, debuting at number 3 with 1.39 million copies. Assassin’s Creed II for the Xbox 360 was new at number 4 with 794 700 copies, while the PS3 version also debuted in the Top 10 at number 8 with 448 400 copies. Left 4 Dead 2 for the Xbox 360 entered the charts at number 5 with 744 000 copies while Dragon Age: Origins for the Xbox 360 was new at number 9 with 362 100 copies.

Nintendo also claimed another three spots in the Top 10 with evergreens Wii Sports Resort at number 6 with 720 200, Wii Fit Plus at number 7 with 679 000 copies and Mario Kart Wii in tenth with 315 000 copies.

Looking ahead

However, Frazier believes it’s not all gloom and doom despite the decline in the industry. “The industry declined 7.6% versus last November, but still produced enough revenue to make this month the second-best November in industry history. YTD the industry is still up 7% over 2007. I think we all have to realize the incredible year that was 2008.”

“Based on seasonality the industry looks like it will reach $20B for the year, which means December would have to be up over last year by 11%. Impossible? I don’t think so. More positive economic news combined with ‘frugal fatigue’ could positively impact industry sales during these last weeks of the holiday season. Breaking even seems more out of reach. In order to break even to last year, December sales would have to be up 36% over December 2008.”

December 9th, 2009 at 10:22am Under PS3

Assassin's Creed II Logo

A recent Twitter tweet emanating from Ubisoft’s official account has confirmed that a much-needed patch has been released for the PlayStation 3 version of Assassin’s Creed II in Europe, while the patch will become available for European Xbox 360 owners on Friday (December 11th).

North American Assassin’s Creed II owners, on the other hand, will be able to get the patch “soon.”

According to a post on Ubisoft’s official forums, this new Assassin’s Creed II patch includes the following, heaving list of fixes and improvements, following complaints of buggy behaviour in the game:

Assassin’s Creed II Patch notes

Fixed: Situation specific bugs

  • Glyph

    • After the player has resolved a glyph (when the unlock code message appears), if the player presses A and B (for 360, X and O on PS3) repeatedly and quickly, the video will appear in full screen, and he will get stuck in “the truth menu”.
  • Fast Travel

    • Some feedback states that Ezio loses the ability to interact with the fast travel stations.
  • Free roaming/Parkour

    • In extremely rare occasions a bug allows Ezio to walk on air.
  • Auditore Cape

    • When first equipping or re-equipping the Auditore cape, users in the Villa become notorious even if the cape description says otherwise.
  • Altaïr’s armour

    • While wearing Altair’s armour the game crashes when performing multiple consecutive double assassinations.
  • Toscana

    • The game occasionally crashes if the player dies in Toscana, the player is stuck in the animus loading screen.
  • Water

    • Ezio and NPCs may get stuck beneath map if pushed in water.
  • Animus Loading Screen

    • There were reports of the game crashing while the player is in the Animus loading screen

Fixed: Mission specific issues

  • Sequence 05 Mission 01

    • The game froze after completing the mission and following certain steps.
  • Sequence 06 Mission 02

    • An extremely rare issue could make the game freeze while Ezio is fighting the guards.
  • Sequence 07 Mission 02

    • Sometimes the civilians knocked down by Rosa could “float”.
  • Sequence 07 Mission 07

    • When the user is in an open conflict, under specific situations the game crashed.
  • Sequence 08 “Venezia”

    • If a player desynchronises during the flying machine sequence, the player sometimes spawned near Leo’s workshop and not on the tower.
  • Secret Location: “Vizitatione”

    • The user remains stuck after locking onto the agile guard with the gun.
  • Sequence 11 Mission 05

    • The user cannot continue gameplay after quitting and loading the game. They are stuck in the hideout.
  • Sequence 14 Mission 02

    • The user falls through the texture if he is hit with rocks by the guards while climbing

Assassin’s Creed II bug ensnares unwitting players

December 7th, 2009 at 03:35am Under PS3

Assassin's Creed II Logo

According to a report on CVG, Assassin’s Creed II currently contains a potentially game-stopping bug that manages to trap players in one area without the ability to escape, forcing players to restart the game from the beginning in order to progress.

The area in question is the Hideout level, and apparently the most effective way to get trapped in there is to save your game after completing chapter 11 of the game, and then quitting the game. Upon returning to the game, you may just be trapped in Hideout with no means of escape, except to start over and replay the game up until that point.

According to an entry on Ubisoft’s forums, the publisher is aware of the problem, as a community developer posted:

“Some users have been experiencing issue during Sequence 11. What has been reported is that when you return to the present in sequence 11 IF you shut off your console when you start back up you are in the hideout and you can’t go back in the Animus.

”We are aware of this problem, and we are glad to say that it will be solved through our upcoming patch.”

So what can you do in the meantime? Well, short of not playing Assassin’s Creed II until the patch is released, maybe just don’t shut off your game until you’re well passed chapter 11?

Assassin’s Creed II DLC announced for next year

December 2nd, 2009 at 09:21am Under PS3

Assassin's Creed II Logo

Ubisoft recently announced that two packs of downloadable content (DLC) will be arriving early next year for the publisher’s Assassin’s Creed II action stealth adventure game.

The first pack will release in January 2010 and is entitled Battle of Forli, while the second will release in February 2010 and is entitled The Bonfire of Vanities.

Very dramatic, but after a quick history lesson, it seems as though these two names refer to actual 15th century historical events that the DLC may revolve around.

This new Assassin’s Creed II DLC will be available for both the Xbox 360 and PS3, naturally. Ubisoft also noted that each DLC pack will weigh in at an incredible 1GB.

UK Software Sales for week ending 28/11: Modern Warfare 2 triumphs again

November 30th, 2009 at 06:13am Under Uncategorized

Modern Warfare 2 Banner Image

Unsurprisingly, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 has once again claimed the No. 1 spot on Chart Track’s UK Software Sales Chart this week, beating last week’s contenders Assassin’s Creed II and New Super Mario Bros. Wii to the punch.

Modern Warfare 2’s sales are down 32% from the previous week, which it seems is more than enough to keep Assassin’s Creed II at No. 2 and New Super Mario Bros. Wii at No. 3, both of which are non-movers from last week.

Fifa 10 manages to step up to No. 4 from No. 6 last week, as Wii Sports Resort swaps places, moving down to No. 6 this week from No. 4. Wii Fit Plus in between is another non-mover at No. 5.

Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games also takes a quick walk upwards, from No. 8 to No. 7 this week, Left 4 Dead 2 exchanges positions by moving down to No. 8 from No. 7, Forza Motorsport 3 is yet another non-mover at No. 9, and F1 2009 moves into the coveted Top Ten by sliding into No. 10 from No. 11 last week.

Other interesting movement on the UK Software Sales Chart this week includes Dr Kawashima’s Brain Training moving up to No. 18 this week from No. 26, Dragon Age: Origins slipping to No. 20 from No. 17, DJ Hero vaulting into No. 21 from No. 35 last week, Rabbids Go Home careening into No. 23 from No. 40, Tekken 6 fighting its way to No. 26 this week from No. 33, and Halo 3: ODST tumbling to the last spot (No. 40) from No. 34 last week.

The Top Ten All Format UK Software Sales Chart follows below:

  • Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (Activision)
  • Assassin’s Creed II (Ubisoft)
  • New Super Mario Bros Wii. (Nintendo)
  • FIFA 10 (EA)
  • Wii Fit Plus (Nintendo)
  • Wii Sports Resort (Nintendo)
  • Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games (Nintendo)
  • Left 4 Dead 2 (Valve)
  • Forza Motorsport 3 (Microsoft)
  • F1 2009 (Codemasters)

Assassin’s Creed II sells 1.6 million in first week

November 24th, 2009 at 10:38am Under Uncategorized

Assassin's Creed II Logo

According to Ubisoft’s internal estimates, Assassin’s Creed II, the publisher’s latest action adventure game which released over the week of November 17th, has gone on to sell an impressive 1.6 million units worldwide during its first week on sale.

Compared to the release of the original Assassin’s Creed in 2007, this number represents a 32% increase over that title’s launch week sales.

While a far cry from Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2’s
first week sales figures, 1.6 million units is extraordinary, and doesn’t even represent a full week of availability in most of Europe, having only released in that territory last Friday (November 20th).

Check out El33tonline’s previous coverage of Assassin’s Creed II to find out more about the stealth-action free-running adventure game.

Xbox 360 and PS3 Assassin’s Creed II graphics comparison video

November 24th, 2009 at 06:43am Under PS3

Assassins Creed 2 Banner Image

OK, let’s get this over with…

In an effort to bring further harmony to the ranks of violently fan-boyish videogamers who have, long ago and without reason, pledged their undying allegiance to a single videogame platform/console/manufacturer/developer/publisher and deemed every other videogame platform/console/manufacturer/developer/publisher to be of inferior quality/talent, here’s a video comparison between the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions of Assassin’s Creed II to display how closely these consoles match one another’s graphical capabilities…

Oh, wait a second… is the Xbox 360 version slightly sharper in the texture department? Or does the PlayStation 3 version look a little better overall? Dang, I can never tell the difference…

See for yourself in the Assassin’s Creed II graphics comparison video below:
