Intriguing debut trailer for Halo: Reach, first details revealed

December 14th, 2009 at 06:18am Under Uncategorized

It must have been like Christmas coming early for Halo fans as the debut trailer for Halo: Reach was released worldwide at the Spike TV Video Game Awards this past weekend.

Halo: Reach Screenshot

Halo: Reach is the prequel to the Halo trilogy and sees players stepping into the boots of a Spartan III. The game is currently in development at Bungie Studios and is scheduled to be released in fall 2010.

Be amazed by the first in-game footage of the new Halo game below. The footage is taken from part of the game’s opening cinematic and provides the first look at the story, introducing players to Noble Team, a squad of battle-hardened Spartan soldiers. Halo: Reach “charts the story of Noble Team in their heroic stand to defend the planet Reach, its people and secrets against a ruthless assault by an alien collective known as the Covenant.”

Halo: Reach will be available exclusively for the Xbox 360 in fall 2010. Players can obtain access to the Halo: Reach multiplayer beta in spring 2010 exclusively through Halo 3: ODST.

Halo: Reach gameplay premieres with multiple Spartans (and some ladies!) [update: now with hi-res]

December 12th, 2009 at 11:06pm Under Xbox 360

Update: Microsoft sent over a hi-res version of the trailer (seen above) as well as the screenshot in the gallery below. According to the publisher, Halo: Reach will follow the story of “Noble Team in their heroic stand to defend the planet Reach.” The company also noted that a “multiplayer beta is coming [in] Spring 2010.” Hooray!

As promised, Spike’s 2009 Video Game Awards delivered the first footage (in-game, ‘natch) of Halo: Reach to the masses. More Spartans? Check! Female Spartans? Check check! A skullfaced Spartan? Wait … what?! Since the show just aired, we’ve got a low-res version of the trailer for you after the break and will have a prettied up version as soon as it’s available.

Bungie explains ’series of stumbles’ in ODST marketing

December 8th, 2009 at 04:20pm Under Xbox 360

From the initial talk of a lower price to a renaming, Bungie’s ever-changing plans for Halo 3: ODST left a lot of people confused as to what the final product would be. “I’m no PR expert, but it’s pretty obvious the game had a series of stumbles; from the naming, to the initial E3 2008 countdown reveal failure, and finally pricing … it would definitely be nice to have a do-over for the game introduction,” senior designer Lars Bakken told G4TV in a recent interview. “The big takeaway for us is just to never comment on matters that are outside of our control,” added community manager Brian Jarrard.

The subject of ODST becoming an “expansion pack,” however, was never an arguable point to executive producer Curtis Creamer. “Though ODST was built from the Halo 3 engine, there were enough changes made to the engine that we could not have released it as an expansion in the way that you might equate with a PC game expansion pack … the ODST executable is not compatible with Halo 3.”

The crew of Bungie devs also reconfirmed that “there are currently no plans for any ODST DLC,” with all of the studio’s resources tied up with Halo: Reach. Hopefully, our thirst for more Firefight maps will be quenched by the inclusion of the mode in future Halo games — a prospect to which the developers responded, “Only time will tell.” Do it for us, Bungie! Please?

Halo: Reach premiere at VGAs will be actual gameplay, says Keighley

December 7th, 2009 at 04:50pm Under Xbox 360

To clear up any misconceptions with “the kids on Twitter,” Spike Video Game Awards host Geoff Keighley took to Major Nelson’s podcast this weekend and explained that the Halo: Reach trailer on next week’s show will be “actual gameplay.” That’s right, folks: none of that live-action or CG mumbo jumbo. “You’ll get a first glimpse at the world of Reach,” Keighley told the Major during this week’s show. “I think it’s going to be the biggest game next year by far.”

When addressing the contents of the trailer — something Keighley claimed to have not seen just yet — he noted that he thinks people will be shocked by the direction than Bungie is taking, calling it a “huge leap forward.” So, Mr. Keighley, it could be said that the studio is reaching new ground then?

… Hello? Where are you going?!

Rumor: First screens, details for Halo Reach leaked

November 5th, 2009 at 07:48pm Under Xbox 360

MLG forum user (and MS Paint fanatic) ToM MoReLLo claims to have played Halo: Reach, and was somehow able to nab multiple blurry screenshots of the game as evidence. Now, when we say blurry we mean blurry. In fact, the classic images of Bigfoot were of higher quality than some of these screens. Perhaps our natural skepticism is taking over, but we’re taking these images with a rather large grain of salt.

As for details, the forum post claims Reach will feature squad-based combat and perks, similar to that of Modern Warfare. Squad-based mechanics certainly make sense, considering former Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter creative director Christian Allen joined Bungie in 2007. But again, grain of salt.

Halo: ReachBungie’s final title in the Halo universe — is expected to ship in 2010. Microsoft has yet to reply to our request for a comment on the images.

First Halo Waypoint programming revealed

November 3rd, 2009 at 10:20am Under Xbox 360

Even if you’re not in the Halo Waypoint preview, you can get an early look at what’s going to be available when it launches for real on Thursday, November 5, thanks to a weekly schedule we received from 343 Industries. By Thursday’s launch, you’ll already be able to watch a “Spotlight on Louis Wu” and a “Halo in Five Minutes” presentation, as well as page through some Firefight screens from the community.

Other content up this week: “Welcome to Waypoint,” which serves as an introduction and overview to the service, some Firefight strategy from Prima, and, on Saturday, a full episode of Halo Legends called “The Babysitter.” See the full schedule after the break.

Xbox Live Top 10: Halo 3, Trials HD continue to dominate

November 1st, 2009 at 12:05am Under Xbox 360

Surprising no one, Major Nelson’s weekly list of most-played games on Xbox Live showcases Halo 3 and a double dose of Call of Duty on the top of the charts, with Modern Warfare and World at War grabbing second and third, respectively. XBLA top-seller Trials HD continues to lead the downloadable space, beating out newcomers Tower Bloxx Deluxe and Panzer General: Allied Assault.

The most notable item on the list is Gearbox Software’s Borderlands, debuting at (a disappointing) ninth on the list. Perhaps evidence that inventory shortages may in fact muck up the wheels of a critically acclaimed game’s launch. Color us surprised … then trace us with sarcasm.

G4 competition dishes out rare Halo 3 flaming armor

October 31st, 2009 at 09:00pm Under Xbox 360

Beyond cries from fanboys for Recon, the rarest of all Halo 3 armor permutations — or at least the rarest option — is strutting around multiplayer matches with a flaming skull. Originally only available to employees of Bungie, the heated helmets are now the prize for G4’s upcoming Sarkathlon.

In order to enter the contest, which runs until midnight on November 8, players must download a special variant of the map Longshore (only found on the second disk of Halo 3: ODST) and find eight hidden grenades scattered throughout the map. The player who completes the task and crosses the finish line in the shortest amount of time with saved replay proof walks away with the flaming skull. It’s the Halo equivalent of painting a giant bulls eye on your back, so why wouldn’t you want it?

Animatronic Covenant Elite costume blows yours out of the water

October 19th, 2009 at 03:30pm Under Xbox 360

The night of All Hallows’ Eve is swiftly approaching. We’re sure that, by now, you’ve got a rough outline of what pop culture icon you’ll attempt to disguise yourself as. We’re also sure that it’s not one-tenth as awesome nor as intricate as the Covenant Elite (of Halo fame) costume recently created by YouTube user petemander1. That is, unless your Optimus Prime costume has animatronic, remote-controlled eyes and mandibles. No? It doesn’t? That’s what we thought.

Check out the two videos posted after the jump to get an early look at Pete’s humbling (and slightly terrifying) creation. We’d say we can’t wait to see how the full costume turns out, but we’ve already got plenty of subjects on which to base our nightmares.
