December 14th, 2009 at 07:50am Under Uncategorized

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 has claimed the number 1 spot on the UK’s All Format Charts for a fifth week, despite an 11% sales decrease. The big question on everyone’s lips is can it stick it out for a sixth week to claim the Christmas number 1 position as the original Modern Warfare 2 did two years ago.

Wii Sports Resort climbs up to number 2 thanks to a 17% sales boost while Assassin’s Creed II hangs on to third (-3%). Wii Fit Plus also moves up the chart to number 4 (+11%) and FIFA 10 falls three places to fifth (-15%).

The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks for the DS debuts at number 12 while James Cameron’s Avatar: The Game enters the chart at number 29 (+108%) with improved sales thanks to the release of the film drawing nearer.

NPD: November videogame sales decrease 7.6% to $2.7 bil in US, Modern Warfare 2 sells over 6 mil

December 11th, 2009 at 02:30am Under Uncategorized

Modern Warfare 2 Box Art

While November was a blockbuster month which saw AAA titles such as Modern Warfare 2, New Super Mario Bros. Wii, Assassin’s Creed II, Left 4 Dead 2 and Dragon Age: Origins hitting shelves across the US, the latest data from US tracking firm NPD Group shows that sales of the videogame industry in the US fell by 7.6% to $2.699 billion in November.

Despite the knock-on effect that these best-selling titles had in boosting sales of their respective consoles, hardware sales also recorded a decrease this past month, down 13.4% to $1.05 billion. And even software sales suffered a 3.1% decline to $1.406 billion, while accessories dropped by 5.5% to $242.2 million.

Nintendo once again dominated the hardware side of things, with the Nintendo DS selling an impressive 1.7 million units and the Wii not too far behind with 1.26 million units. The Xbox 360 outsold the PS3, with Microsoft’s console recording sales of 819 500 units and Sony’s 710 400. The PSP followed with 293 900 units and the PS2 with 203 100.

Modern Warfare 2 dominates

As expected Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 ruled the software roost with a combined total of 6.07 million copies sold during November. The Xbox 360 version triumphed at number 1 with a whopping 4.2 million copies sold, followed by the PS3 version in second place with 1.87 million copies.

According to NPD analyst Anita Frazier, “Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 has achieved the top spot for first-month sales of any game at the title level. Halo 3 previously held the spot when it sold 3.3 million units in September ‘07 in 12 days at retail. MW2 bested Halo 3’s daily sales rate by 16% in its 19 days at retail in November.”

“While this year’s top-selling item bested last year’s by 283%, it couldn’t make up for softness elsewhere. The top 50 games this year sold 5% less units than did the top 50 last year.”

New Super Mario Bros. Wii proved that Mario still has what it takes, debuting at number 3 with 1.39 million copies. Assassin’s Creed II for the Xbox 360 was new at number 4 with 794 700 copies, while the PS3 version also debuted in the Top 10 at number 8 with 448 400 copies. Left 4 Dead 2 for the Xbox 360 entered the charts at number 5 with 744 000 copies while Dragon Age: Origins for the Xbox 360 was new at number 9 with 362 100 copies.

Nintendo also claimed another three spots in the Top 10 with evergreens Wii Sports Resort at number 6 with 720 200, Wii Fit Plus at number 7 with 679 000 copies and Mario Kart Wii in tenth with 315 000 copies.

Looking ahead

However, Frazier believes it’s not all gloom and doom despite the decline in the industry. “The industry declined 7.6% versus last November, but still produced enough revenue to make this month the second-best November in industry history. YTD the industry is still up 7% over 2007. I think we all have to realize the incredible year that was 2008.”

“Based on seasonality the industry looks like it will reach $20B for the year, which means December would have to be up over last year by 11%. Impossible? I don’t think so. More positive economic news combined with ‘frugal fatigue’ could positively impact industry sales during these last weeks of the holiday season. Breaking even seems more out of reach. In order to break even to last year, December sales would have to be up 36% over December 2008.”

Modern Warfare 2 patch 1.06 in MS certification, fixes Javelin and care package glitches

December 8th, 2009 at 09:46am Under PS3

Modern Warfare 2 Logo

Another flurry of Twitter tweets has revealed that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2’s next patch, 1.06, is currently in certification at Microsoft and will arrive in due course. From a post by Infinity Ward’s Robert Bowling:

“For those playing [MW2] on Xbox 360. The same fixes that are in 1.06 are coming to you, it’s currently in Microsoft cert. Out of my hands.”

Bowling also reminds players that, while Microsoft will be suspending those of you who choose to take advantage of current glitches in the game from Xbox LIVE, Sony chose not to punish players in this way. According to Bowling:

“No. PSN chose to not take any action against glitchers.”

Bowling also goes on to detail what the current PS3 patch, 1.06, actually does:

“PS3 update 1.06 is the javelin fix, care package glitch fix, and addresses areas where players could get into geo. Like rocks on Afghan.”

So Xbox 360 owners will just have to sit tight for now, unfortunately.

UK Software Sales for week ending 05/12: Modern Warfare 2 crushes all

December 7th, 2009 at 05:54am Under Uncategorized

Modern Warfare 2 Logo

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 continues its crushing sales supremacy over every other game in Chart Track’s UK Software Sales Chart this past week, crunching Fifa 10 at No. 2 and Assassin’s Creed II at No. 3 this week to snatch No. 1 once again.

Modern Warfare 2’s sales are down a miniscule 7%, which is small enough to retain its market leading performance for the fourth week in a row. We’ll have to wait and see if it matches its older sibling, Call of Duty: World at War, which managed a straight five weeks at No. 1 before being overtaken by Fifa 09.

The same pattern could be followed as Fifa 10 (sales up 24%) is looking quite dangerous, and despite what must be a desponding defeat this week, the football sim manages to climb to No. 2 from No. 4 last week, pushing Assassin’s Creed II down to No. 3 this week from No. 2, causing a domino effect that catches New Super Mario Bros. Wii and sends it to No. 4 from No. 3 last week.

Wii Sports Resort Boxshot

Wii Sports Resort (sales up 30%) and Wii Fit Plus (sales up 21%) continue their chart dominance tussle, effectively swapping places with one another as Wii Sports Resort lands at No. 5 from No. 6, and Wii Fit Plus sits at No. 6 from No. 5.

Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games (sales up by 28%) is a non-mover at No. 7 as LEGO Indiana Jones 2: The Adventure Continues (sales up 74%) shoots up to No. 8 from No. 12 last week. Forza Motorsport 3 (sales up 27%) stubbornly resists moving from No. 9, and Mario Kart Wii (sales up 24%) makes its way back into the coveted Top Ten, shifting into No. 10 from No. 11 last week.

Other interesting movement on the UK Software Sales Chart this week includes Left 4 Dead 2 dropping to No. 14 from No. 8 last week, F1 2009 losing a few places and charting at No. 16 from No. 10, Batman: Arkham Asylum (sales up 122%) re-entering the chart at No. 20 thanks to a retailer promotion, and Peppa Pig: The Game (sales up 384%) is launched back into the chart with the release of the Wii version.

Borderlands meanwhile reclaims positions and shifts to No. 23 from way down at No. 38 last week, Just Dance (sales up 290%) re-enters the chart at No. 30, and The Saboteur debuts in the chart at a lowly No. 39 in its first week on sale.

The Top Ten All Format UK Software Sales Chart follows below:

  • Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (Activision)
  • FIFA 10 (EA)
  • Assassin’s Creed II (Ubisoft)
  • New Super Mario Bros Wii. (Nintendo)
  • Wii Sports Resort (Nintendo)
  • Wii Fit Plus (Nintendo)
  • Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games (Nintendo)
  • LEGO Indiana Jones 2: The Adventure Continues (LusasArts)
  • Forza Motorsport 3 (Microsoft)
  • Mario Kart Wii (Nintendo)

Medal of Honor reboot slated for Fall 2010

December 4th, 2009 at 05:06am Under Uncategorized

Medal of Honor Box Art

According to pre-order information on EA’s own official website, their upcoming Medal of Honor reboot announced the other day will be winding its way to stores in the ‘Fall’ of next year.

Other than the fact that you can already pre-order the game, this lends credence to recent statements by EA’s CEO John Riccitiello regarding his company’s position in the videogame market as far as shooters are concerned, and how he intends rising to the top, saying:

“I’m not saying it’s going to happen tomorrow, but in the way that Activision sort of alternates sequels of Modern Warfare and Call of Duty and owns the leadership position in FPS [first-person-shooter], between Medal of Honor and Battlefield, I want it back.

“And we’re going to get there with innovation and quality.”

A Fall release for Medal of Honor would place it right in the firing lines of Activision Blizzard’s next Call of Duty release, which has traditionally released in the Fall (beginning of September to the end of November).

This is a pretty bold move considering the last entry to the Call of Duty series, Modern Warfare 2, almost literally took the world by storm and sold 4.7 million copies in one day, but this could also point to Riccitiello’s confidence in not only the new Medal of Honor game, but his strategy going forward.

It’ll be an interesting battle, for sure.

Modern Warfare 2 ‘Javelin Glitch’ fix incoming, 2 week LIVE ban for abusers

December 3rd, 2009 at 09:10am Under PS3

Modern Warfare 2 Logo

After a flurry of Twitter tweets from people in the know, it seems the infamous ‘Javelin Glitch’ in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2’s online multiplayer is in the process of being fixed.

Here’s Infinity Ward’s Creative Strategist Robert Bowling:

“Javelin Glitch fix currently in test. Once it’s cleared, we’ll be urging it through Microsoft & Sony certification as fast as possible.”

This was followed up by a Twitter entry from Director of Policy and Enforcement for Xbox LIVE, Stephen Toulouse, warning abusers of the glitch that they would face a suspension from Xbox LIVE:

“While IW works on getting the MW2 glitch fixed, people we catch using it will [receive] suspensions from LIVE. Play fair everyone. :>”

In an effort to lend a helping hand and push Infinity Ward’s glitch fix through the pipes as soon as possible, Xbox mouthpiece Larry ‘Major Nelson’ Hryb tweeted in reply to Robert Bowling’s entry:

“Thanks for the update….I’ll put pressure on from my side as well.”

The Javelin Glitch in question involves players exploiting Modern Warfare 2’s more explosive weaponry in online play in combination with running perks, effectively turning you into a suicide bomber ready to explode on death, taking multiple victims with you.

Don’t do it, or else you’ll be faced with a two week ban on Xbox LIVE.

A patch for the glitch will arrive for PC Modern Warfare 2 players as soon as it’s ready, while PS3 and Xbox 360 users will need to wait for Sony and Microsoft to approve the update, which could mean it’ll be with us anytime from today until some time next week.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 settles into the No. 1 spot on the Xbox LIVE Activity listing this past week, and will probably make itself comfortable for the long haul unless Halo 3, Call of Duty 4 and Call of Duty: World at War can spring some kind of miracle and usurp that game’s dominance in the months to come.

UK Software Sales for week ending 28/11: Modern Warfare 2 triumphs again

November 30th, 2009 at 06:13am Under Uncategorized

Modern Warfare 2 Banner Image

Unsurprisingly, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 has once again claimed the No. 1 spot on Chart Track’s UK Software Sales Chart this week, beating last week’s contenders Assassin’s Creed II and New Super Mario Bros. Wii to the punch.

Modern Warfare 2’s sales are down 32% from the previous week, which it seems is more than enough to keep Assassin’s Creed II at No. 2 and New Super Mario Bros. Wii at No. 3, both of which are non-movers from last week.

Fifa 10 manages to step up to No. 4 from No. 6 last week, as Wii Sports Resort swaps places, moving down to No. 6 this week from No. 4. Wii Fit Plus in between is another non-mover at No. 5.

Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games also takes a quick walk upwards, from No. 8 to No. 7 this week, Left 4 Dead 2 exchanges positions by moving down to No. 8 from No. 7, Forza Motorsport 3 is yet another non-mover at No. 9, and F1 2009 moves into the coveted Top Ten by sliding into No. 10 from No. 11 last week.

Other interesting movement on the UK Software Sales Chart this week includes Dr Kawashima’s Brain Training moving up to No. 18 this week from No. 26, Dragon Age: Origins slipping to No. 20 from No. 17, DJ Hero vaulting into No. 21 from No. 35 last week, Rabbids Go Home careening into No. 23 from No. 40, Tekken 6 fighting its way to No. 26 this week from No. 33, and Halo 3: ODST tumbling to the last spot (No. 40) from No. 34 last week.

The Top Ten All Format UK Software Sales Chart follows below:

  • Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (Activision)

Modern Warfare 2 title update on the way, developer looking for suggestions

November 30th, 2009 at 02:52am Under PC+ PS3

Modern Warfare 2 Logo

Infinity Ward’s Robert Bowling recently tweeted that, despite the studio’s holiday festivities, a title update for the all-conquering Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is on the way. From Bowling:

“… at the moment [we’re] on Holiday (Thanksgiving) but playing and tracking feedback for the first major title update.”

When this title update will appear is anyone’s guess, but it seems as though the developer is soliciting ideas for refinements and improvements, as after a Twitter member suggested that “Region filter would be awesome!” for Modern Warfare 2’s multiplayer, Bowling replied:

“I agree…. It’s an ongoing discussion among the team on improving international matchmaking. Just know it’s not being ignored.”

This seems like a sign that, if you have a Twitter account, you’d best start hitting Bowling up on suggestions!
