Penny Arcade’s Child’s Play charity reaches $1 million in donations

December 7th, 2009 at 03:04am Under Uncategorized

Penny Arcade’s annual Child’s Play charity drive has recently reached over $1 million in donations, the web comic’s co-creator Mike “Gabe” Krahulik announced last Friday:

Child's Play Charity Logo

“We are currently sitting at $1,010,680.28! That’s up from $748,312.10 last week,” posted Krahulik. “This is Child’s Play’s seventh year, and this is the fastest we have ever gotten to the million dollar mark. Considering everything that’s going on [with the economy], that’s just astounding.”

The Child’s Play charity seeks both financial and gift donations to distribute to children’s hospitals around the world, and over the years has raised over $5 million in “donations of toys, games, books and cash.” Now in 2009, Child’s Play has partnered with almost 70 hospitals in North America, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Egypt and the UK which will receive donations on behalf of Child’s Play (and gamers, too) when the drive wraps up later this year.

If you would like to make a donation, don’t hesitate to visit the charity’s website over here.

Charity XBLA game Chime’s gameplay explained in latest trailer

December 4th, 2009 at 06:00pm Under Xbox 360

What’s the only thing more satisfying than aligning colorful blocks on a rectangular grid while simultaneously recreating pleasant ambient tunes from musical artists such as Moby? Simple — doing so while simultaneously donating to charity. That’s the package that OneBigGame and Zoe Mode will offer on XBLA at some point this winter, when their music/puzzle game Chime lands on the XBLA.

Though we’ve known about this non-profit puzzler for a month now, we’ve yet to see the title in action. Fortunately, OneBigGame dropped a gameplay demonstration video earlier today, which we’ve posted above. Yeah, sure, it’s got a few aesthetic similarities to Lumines, but considering all the proceeds from the game go to Save the Children and Starlight Children’s foundation, we’re not going to raise a stink about it. We think saving children is like, the coolest thing you can possibly do.

GAME and Activision UK team up for Modern Warfare 2 charity event next weekend

November 25th, 2009 at 08:30pm Under Xbox 360

War Child International is a coalition of organizations that seeks to aid children affected by war. Activision UK and GAME have decided to pitch in and are joining up to host an online event next weekend in Modern Warfare 2, asking that UK citizens play a bit of the game on Xbox Live. The more people enlist for action online, the more Activision UK will donate to the charity.

If you’re looking for more information on the event, there’s a Facebook page and a Twitter account set up to help coordinate. If you’ve got a busy weekend ahead of you on December 4, try to make time for at least one online match. It’s not every day you can make someone else’s life better just by playing a video game.

Child’s Play & Harmonix rock San Fran for charity Dec. 9

November 20th, 2009 at 07:00am Under PSP

Harmonix and Child’s Play have announced that they’re banding together for a charity benefit Rock Band night at San Francisco’s DNA Lounge the night of December 9. “Ümloud!” is an all-ages event organized by GameLife’s Chris Kohler, Gamehelper’s Joe Markert and Telltale Games’ John “Seg” Seggerson, and staffed by a number of Bay Area games bloggers, including yours truly.

The party kicks off at 7PM PT and runs through 2AM PT on December 10, with a suggested $10 donation for admission. Everyone who attends will automagically be made eligible for a chance to win some of the many raffle prizes that’ll be awarded throughout the night, but those who wish to donate more can sign up for two different “band packages” — which include reserved songs and the chance to play on DNA’s main stage — at the Ümloud! site.

Proceeds from the event will go to provide toys and video games to children’s hospitals nationwide, including the local Oakland Children’s Hospital.

Zoe Mode creating not-for-profit XBLA puzzler for children’s charity

November 4th, 2009 at 12:59am Under Xbox 360

OneBigGame, a non-profit games publisher founded in 2007, announced today that its first title will come from Zoë Mode, creator of games such as Crush (PSP), You’re In the Movies (360) and co-developer of the SingStar franchise (PS3) with SCEE. Called Chime, the music-based puzzle game will launch this winter on Xbox Live Arcade.

The first screens, while sort of soothing in their minimalism, don’t exactly explain anything about how the game’s played. Thankfully, Zoë Mode goes into detail about the gameplay on its newly launched Chime site.

The developer is the first of what OneBigGame says are many others currently creating 15 titles, with at least 80 percent of all revenue made from them going to two charities: Save the Children and Starlight Children’s Foundation. Zoë Mode developed Chime pro bono and has committed to giving all the royalties it receives from the XBLA game — which it says will be around 60 percent of its purchase price — to OneBigGame.

Other developers signed on to produce games include Shiny founder David Perry, PaRappa the Rapper creator Masaya Matsuura and prolific adventure game designer Charles Cecil (Beneath a Steel Sky, Broken Sword).

TripleSpeedRunners take on Nintendo trio for charity

October 14th, 2009 at 03:00am Under Wii / Nintendo

Harnessing the power of Nintendo franchises for charity, the folks at TripleSpeedRunners will be spending 48 hours this weekend speed-running through games from the Donkey Kong, Star Fox, and Kirby series. Live streaming of the event will be handled on the crew’s website, with live commentary and chat available to cheer the players — or jeer ‘em if you’re a player hater.

All proceeds from donations during the event will go to DC Outreach, an organization that provides worldwide support to families affected by Dyskeratosis Congenita. Last time TSR got together, it raised $1,140 for the DC charity, but we know with the full support of the Joystiq BioMass behind them we can help them double that. Right, folks?

The speed-runs kick off this Friday at 7PM ET sharp.

Money can buy you a custom Beatles: Rock Band Xbox 360

September 8th, 2009 at 07:29pm Under Xbox 360

You have two options for getting your hands on one of these custom-designed Beatles: Rock Band Xbox 360 consoles. You can either offer the winning bid on the unit being auctioned by Microsoft — which has a current high bid of $680, with almost ten days to go — or you can purchase the 360-exclusive downloadable version of “All You Need is Love” and be automatically entered into a drawing to win one. Of course, the costlier eBay method has better odds!

Whichever method you use, all of the proceeds will go to Doctors Without Borders. That makes you a hero for trying to win a prize or playing a song in a video game!

Madmen completing every Mario game for charity

July 12th, 2009 at 01:00pm Under Wii / Nintendo

We love Mario. We mean, we’re somewhat contractually obligated to, being huge nerds and all. Still, there’s certain stages in the core Mario games that are simply excruciating to play — we usually skip them during our nostalgic romps. That’s why we can’t help but admire the efforts of three men who are playing through every Super Mario title — collecting every star, completing every level and Shining every Get! (Err — getting every Shine.)

They’re not doing this for fun, of course — for the second year in a row, they’re running through this “Mario Marathon,” collecting donations for Child’s Play. They’ve already been at it for two days — but with the team yet to totally complete Super Mario 64, Super Mario Galaxy, Super Mario Sunshine, then Super Mario Galaxy again (as that totally secret character), there’s a lot of ballgame left to be played.
