War. What is it good for? Super successful games!
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 may be undergoing a gradual sales slide, dropping another 11 percent this past week, but since the title has maintained the top position on the
UK sales chart for a fifth week, it must be sliding down on a pretty fluffy cushion.
Call of Duty: World at War held the high ground for five weeks last year before
FIFA took it during Christmas week. Speaking of
FIFA, the latest installment dropped from second to fifth this week.
Assassin’s Creed 2 couldn’t find the next grip location and holds its position in third. Nintendo has Wii Sports Resort, Wii Fit Plus and New Super Mario Bros. Wii at spots two, four and six, respectively. As for premieres, The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks rolled in at 12th place and James Cameron’s Avatar: The Game entered at number 29. Now let’s see how Avatar: The Movie That Inspired The Game does. If it’s a hit, that should help sales of the game.

There’s “No Russian” Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 off the top spot on the UK sales charts. Infinity Ward’s mega-hit is killin’ terrorists, civilians and retail at a solid tick, despite the seven percent sales drop from the prior week. The FPS has held the high ground for four weeks now, repelling solid competition from the footie fantasies of FIFA 10 and the hidden blades of Assassin’s Creed 2.
Call of Duty: World at War maintained the number one position on the charts last year for five weeks, before FIFA 09 rushed the goal and scored the top spot during Christmas week. Thanks to retail promotions, game of the year candidate Batman: Arkham Asylum sales surged 122 percent, bringing the Dark Knight back onto the chart in the twenty spot.

Gfk-ChartTrack data indicates that the Wii has passed the six million mark in the UK, one week shy of three years after it launched. Detailing the system’s rise to MCV, ChartTrack director Dorian Bloch said, “In calendar year 2007, it sold 1.81 million – but really took off in 2008, with 2.73 million sold. So far in 2009, it’s hit 1.31 million – but it’s got a few weeks to build on that before Christmas.” We know to what we should ascribe the console’s success. You guessed it: Escape from Bug Island.
This feat makes Wii the fastest-selling console in the history of the UK. MCV notes that it’s still not the best-selling console, an honor reserved for the over 10-million-strong PS2.

The Assassin’s Creed sequel may not have taken out Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 from the top spot on the UK charts, but the game did outperform the original’s 2007 debut by 12 percent in unit sales. Although Chart Track doesn’t give specific unit sales figures, it’s staggering to think that Infinity Ward’s FPS dropped 86 percent after its launch week and still retained the top spot.
Behind the big boys of violence, Nintendo’s New Super Mario Bros. Wii, Wii Sports Resort and Wii Fit Plus took the next three spots, respectively. The hardened Left 4 Dead 2 shambled up to seventh spot.

Much like a dude-seeking missile dropped from an overhead predator drone, Modern Warfare 2 sales plummeted in the UK after the game’s first day of availability. As you already know, the game moved 1.23 million copies on its launch day — however, according to Chart Track’s calculations, it finished off the week with a paltry 1.78 million units (for £67.4 million) sold. With pathetic figures like that, you know Activision’s got to be feeling disappointed.
Other UK chart staples (Wii Fit Plus, Wii Sports Resort, FIFA 10) all maintained their top 10 ranking this week — though the list had two unfamiliar visitors who vaulted to the top of the charts on the back of a new 360 bundle: Lego Batman (which jumped from 14th place to 7th) and Pure (which sprung from 23rd place to 9th). That’s quite a comeback for these two titles, though perhaps they would have fared even better had they been bundled with copies of Modern Warfare 2 instead.

Citing “astonishing” first-day sales figures in the UK, the Entertainment and Leisure Software Publishers Association has trumpeted Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2’s debut as a sign that “interactive entertainment has completely come of age.” Said Michael Rawlinson, Director General of the ELSPA: “These first day sales figures are astonishing and clear evidence that video games are now mainstream in the UK.”
Smashing through the estimated 631,000 units sold by 2008’s Grand Theft Auto IV, Infinity Ward’s slick shooter grossed £47 million (roughly $78.3 million) in first-day sales, which ELSPA and GFK-ChartTrack pair with 1.23 million units sold. Sold to adults, of course! “So, as an 18-rated video game, it is important that this game is not played by children, and parents should be appropriately vigilant,” said Rawlinson. “We ask everyone to make sure they check the packaging of games to ensure they are suitable for their players, especially as we enter the festive season when video games are one of the most popular gifts of the holiday.”
We hope you don’t take offense, people of the UK, but some of you have awfully high-pitched voices online.

Another football game came out in the UK last week and, once again, it came in first place in the region’s weekly software sales charts. This time around, the game was Football Manager 2010, in which soccer isn’t played, but rather, managed. That’s far too boring a concept to discuss further, so instead, let’s move to the other big debuts: Wii Fit Plus, for instance, came in second place for the week, which is — wait a minute. Doesn’t Wii Fit Plus have a “Soccer Heading” minigame? Oh, Nintendo. You know exactly what you’re doing.
Episodes From Liberty City and Tekken 6 also made a splash during their launch week, garnering sixth and eighth place finishes, respectively. However, DJ Hero seems to be following its expected, slow-starting sales trajectory, debuting at twentieth place in last week’s chart. We’ve got a small suggestion for FreeStyle Games to improve the rhythm title’s performance in the UK: Needs moar Dizzee Rascal.

The Beatles: Rock Band’s initial U.S. tour at retail has proven boast-worthy for its promoters. Following two promising platform appearances in NPD’s top 10 software sales chart for September, MTV Games and Harmonix have declared B:RB “the top selling music video game in the U.S. for September.” The Beatles-only game (released September 9) outsold Guitar Hero 5 (released September 1) with 595,000 units to 499,000 units in total U.S. sales for the month, according to a statement released by the NPD*. Additionally, charity-driven purchases of the “All You Need Is Love” DLC track exceeded 100,000 downloads on Xbox 360 in September.
The makers of B:RB have also rubbed in a few seemingly noteworthy facts; namely, (1) U.S. purchases of GH5 in September were eligible for a free mail-away copy of Guitar Hero: Van Halen, and (2) GH5 is available on one additional platform, PS2. Of course, Van Halen isn’t exactly the American equivalent of The Beatles, and the PS2 is no longer the dominant platform to stage one’s acts upon. Still, despite the staggering odds stacked against its success, B:RB managed to capture the mindshare of U.S. gamers. (And we all know that Americans like to speak their minds with their monies.)
The sales de-feat must feel good for MTV Games and Harmonix — what with B:RB being burned in the sales competition with GH5 by the kingdom that birthed the band (see: Chart-Track UK September sales rankings posted after the break). What was it? Right: Guitar Hero 5 supposedly outsold The Beatles: Rock Band “2-to-1 in the UK.”
So, score a victory for B:RB in the battle of the bands fought in U.S. retail last month. But let’s not forget there’s a bigger, “World War of Rock” being waged, as well. And our wallets are the oft-unreported collateral damage.

FIFA 10 — the Madden of Europa — had the most successful “all formats” launch since Grand Theft Auto IV in the UK, according to Chart Track. First week sales of the footie fiesta grew by nearly 48 percent over its predecessor’s opening week a year ago. This was the highest-selling launch of a FIFA game ever, with the Xbox 360 generating 48 percent of sales, PS3 46 percent, and the remaining formats making up six percent.
Professor Layton and Pandora’s Box (the Diabolical Box in the States) held onto the number two spot from the week prior, while Halo 3: ODST sales dropped 75 percent to the third spot, after holding last week’s crown.

Halo 3: ODST had the type of UK launch one would expect from a Bungie Halo game. According to Chart Track, 64 percent of ODST’s sales were recorded in the first 24 hours after launch last Tuesday, September 22, helping to rank the game twelfth on the list of all-time week one sell-throughs (for a single format). For context, Master Chief’s previous outing, Halo 3, rocketed to the fourth highest first week sell-through upon its release, trailing only GTA: San Andreas for PS2, Grand Theft Auto IV for Xbox 360, and — surprise, surprise — GTA IV for PS3.
Professor Layton and Pandora’s Box (the Diabolical Box in the States) premiered at the number two spot last week, with prior week’s top performer, Need for Speed: Shift, tapping the brakes down to third.
