Do you ever want to go beyond the Kirby games, and explore the deep backstory and complex, rich cast of characters in the Kirby universe? If so, you’ll be pleased to hear that manga/anime publisher Viz Media is releasing a 25-volume Kirby manga in North America, joining Zelda and Pokemon manga.
The manga by Hirokazu Hikawa follows “Kirby and his friend, Chirby,” trying to return the Star Rod while being pursued by King Dedede. Essentially, it’s Lord of the Rings, but with an infantile pink monster who devours everything instead of a hobbit. The first volume will be out September 2010.

According to a tweet by comic publisher IDW, we won’t just read comics on the PSP, we’ll hear them as well. At least we’ll hear people talking about them. “Editing more audio tracks from @Templesmith (Ben Templesmith) for Wormwood on the PSP,” one tweet noted. A subsequent message clarified the nature of the audio: “Recording more @Templesmith commentaries tonight.”
The official PlayStation Digital Comics Twitter account (yes, we’re sourcing another tweet) pointed out the note, saying “I’m so pleased IDW are taking advantage of the optional audio sound track(s) available to publishers.” We agree — it’s nice to know that the PSP Digital Comics service will add something to the medium beyond a different interface.

If you’re on the fence about Sony’s upcoming PSP Digital Comics service, the PlayStation UK blog has a few more sampler comics to decide whether the feature piques your interest. Available for lucky users in the UK, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa are two sampler comics, featuring the service’s highly touted Autoflow feature — which mimics the way your eyes read a page. Following the release of the PSP’s 6.20 firmware, PlayStation released comic samples of Transformers: All Hail Megatron and Aleister Arcane.
Free sample first-issues of Star Trek: Enterprise Experiment and Astro Boy: The Movie Adaptation are available until December 16. In order to grab your sample, make sure to first download the Comic App via the “Extras” section of the XMB (or through this link) for your PSP and use the redemption codes available on PlayStation’s UK blog. Then prepare to use your amazing 3D hardware to … read!

Not to be overshadowed by its bigger brother, a new PSP firmware has gone live tonight. Update 6.20 adds the ability to export video and photo playlists from an updated version of Media Go. However, the biggest addition to this update is the PlayStation Network Digital Comics Reader in a new “Extras” section of the XMB. While the Reader can be downloaded tonight, the service won’t go live until December in Australia, Ireland, New Zealand, South Africa, the United Kingdom and the United States. Japan will be getting a manga service slightly earlier. French, Italian, German and Spanish stores will follow in early 2010. Here’s the full change log:
- The importing of playlists from the Media Go application is now supported under [Video].
- The importing of playlists from the PlayStation 3 system or the Media Go application is now supported under [Photo].
- The [TV] category has been integrated into the new [Extras] category in the XMB menu. Compatible models: PSP-2000, PSP-2005, PSP-3000, PSP-N1000, PSP-N1005

Sony had two big announcements for the PSP at GamesCom today. First up was the “PSP Minis” service, which opens the platform to bite-sized, iPhone-esque applications under 100MB in size. Launching the same day as the PSP Go, the service will greatly expand the content available on the PlayStation Store. The initial lineup of games, seen in the video above and gallery below, include a variety of little-known titles like Break Quest, Melody Bloxx, Circles, Flexis, Puzzle Scape, Sudoku, Tetris, Zombie Tycoon, Little Track. This is but a small sampling of the Minis’ launch lineup.
Additionally, Sony made the Digital Comics service for the PSP official. The first announced partner is Marvel, but many more are to be announced in the future. In a chat with Eric Lempel, we found out that details like pricing and placement on the XMB are still being determined. You can check out a video of the service after the break.

Epic Games and Microsoft Game Studios are ramping up for the impending release of Chair Entertainment’s Shadow Complex on XBLA, today revealing that the game’s script was written by Eisner Award winning author Peter David. David has worked on various comic book titles for numerous imprints, but is probably best known for his run on The Incredible Hulk. He currently writes She-Hulk and X-Factor for Marvel.
The script for Shadow Complex is adapted from work by sci-fi author and visionary Orson Scott Card, whose 2006 novel, Empire, is based on the game’s universe and an original concept by game designer Donald Mustard. David has written a story that parallels the events of the novel, which itself focuses on a future American civil war. We recently saw the game in action and wrote up our impressions.
David, Mustard and Epic’s Cliff Bleszinski will be on-hand at next week’s San Diego Comic-Con to promote the game, which hits the Xbox Live Marketplace on August 19.

It’s tough being a super hero. If you’re Dr. Doom and you’re feeling down, you can just blow something up. If you’re The Thing, well, all you can really do is look in a mirror and cry to yourself.
That was before Punch-Out!!, though, with a new ad (courtesy of Gamervision) popping up in comics showing two beefy brawlers finding a proper outlet for their stress. Oh, we really wouldn’t suggest playing with the Wiimote and Nunchuk, super guys. The game is way better with the classic controls.
