The average American viewed over 9 million advertising messages over the past decade — logically, a few would stick out in your mind as being better than the rest. Advertising trade publication Adweek recently voted on the best piece of video marketing to be released this decade. Two video game ads you might remember made the final nominees: “Diorama,” for Halo 3, and “Mountain,” for the PlayStation 2.
Sadly, both of these ads lost to Honda’s “Grrr” ad — if only Sony’s “Horrifying, Reverse-Weeping Baby” spot had made it into the list of nominees, the company could have brought home the gold.

This latest ad from Nintendo isn’t the usual we’ve come accustomed to seeing from The Big N. For one, it lacks any celebrity presence whatsoever. Second, it’s the most original ad we’ve seen from Nintendo since the hilarious Punch-Out!! commercial. Finally, we’re just really into disappointed father figures. It’s kinda our thing.
Head past the break to check out the ad.

While we’re all playing New Super Mario Bros. Wii, tossing our friends into bottomless pits and reacquainting ourselves with the Koopalings, Japanese Wii owners are still waiting for the game’s December 3 release date. For now, instead of the game, they get … these commercials, featuring people dressed in inexplicable, matching bohemian outfits, playing NSMB Wii with a lot of excitement and not too much skill.
Siliconera notes that the game’s ostensible banner feature — multiplayer — is totally missing from these ads, in favor of presenting the experience as something that’s easy to get into. We suppose if you’re really terrible at Mario games (a plight with which we sympathize), you don’t want to be reminded that other people have an easy way to witness your terribleness. Still, we think the tentative play emphasizes the sense of discovery that is so wonderful about the first trip through any Mario level.

We’re not afraid to admit that Ed Peduzzi’s Super Mario Galaxy commercial gets us all misty. It’s a powerful combination of Sigur Rós’ “Hoppípolla” and the classic footage of Nintendo’s Italian plumber, crescendoing in a mighty display of Super Mario Galaxy that really gave our heart strings a tug. Check it out for yourself past the break and if you don’t get goosebumps, well you just may be a soulless husk of a human being.

Okay, we won’t deny it — the first TV spot for Left 4 Dead 2 is pretty cool. After all, it’s got the four survivor characters in a baseball stadium filled with the infected undead, one of which gets knocked into the bleachers (or at least a few feet through the air) by a baseball bat. But as much as it’s an advertisement for the game, it’s also one for GameStop, driving home the fact that the American baseball bat is available only through pre-order at the retailer. Good for them!
It’s a bit of a downer, though, for those who’ve reserved the game elsewhere. Or what about the people who just walk into a store on release day to snap up a copy? We’ve got it! The next ad should feature the survivors being ripped apart by zombies, with the tagline “Pre-order or Die!” We mean, a company’s eventually going to go there someday, right?

Borderlands is working its art style to the max — so strange to look back at the original design now — in this TV spot for the FPS-RPG lovechild. And how about all that actual gamepley footage, huh? Imagine selling a game based on that … How risqué!
With five days to go until launch, the game’s success is one of the bigger question marks this holiday season. Thankfully, for Borderlands’ sake, so many big games have left the arena that a new IP (no, not internet protocol) just might stand a better-than-average chance in the marketplace. At the very least, the box art is sure to grab attention on retail shelves. Go on, Claptrap, we believe in you.

The marketing leading up to Brütal Legend’s Rocktober 13 release date (hey, that’s today!) has been unlike any Tim Schafer game to date — a steady stream of content from the game on top of the occasional live-action short. And now, Schafer’s biggest project is taking the marketing machine to the boob tube (we’ve embedded the ad after the break, via YouTube) with a ‘Hell yeah!’-laden ditty.
The bad economy paired with Brütal Legend’s same-day release alongside Uncharted 2 means EA needs to get the word out. Hopefully Eddie Riggs’ repeated phrase will do the trick.

With Bayonetta out in Japan on October 29, Sega is beginning to market the game aggressively with (of course) the downloadable demo, but also a new Japanese TV commercial (after the break) featuring the debut of the theme, “Something Missing” by MiChi. Will the Japanese audience respond to a woman in an undulating hair suit fighting demons? Brief footage of a real model dressed as Bayonetta couldn’t hurt, though the crowd at Tokyo Game Show suggested the game doesn’t really need help drawing attention.
Meanwhile, Platinum Games may be trying to divert some of that attention toward Sega. Not only does the (slightly less visually appealing) PS3 demo include a “Converted by Sega” screen in the introduction, Famitsu’s infobox for the game was updated in the last issue to include “PS3 port developer: Sega.” Either Platinum asked for those notices, or Sega’s really proud of the work it’s done.

Sometimes, we want to show you the behind-the-scenes action at Joystiq HQ. Here are a few excerpts from when we first uncovered the live-action Halo 3 ODST commercial:
- JC Fletcher: “Wow, glad I’m not in the ODST”
- Andrew Yoon: “Holy **** @ ODST”
- Randy Nelson “Awesome”
You too can marvel in its splendor after the break. And when you do, you’re likely to agree with Ludwig Kietzmann: “Where’s mah Halo moviez?”
[Thanks, Zach!]

In a 30-second clip that we’re not exactly sure came from this decade, MTV Games/Harmonix preview upcoming music/rhythm game The Beatles: Rock Band by way of a big party on Abbey Road. No, we don’t mean the street itself, we mean that the enormously famous album cover got turned into a big ol’ 30-second party in celebration of the upcoming game. Other than a somewhat creepy faux John Lennon around the halfway mark, this commercial provides yet another reason to be more excited than ever for the day that the Dreamcast turns 10.
