Activision forms Sledgehammer Games, headed by Dead Space vets

November 18th, 2009 at 04:03am Under Uncategorized

After top EA developers Glen Schofield and Michael Condrey left the publisher and their newly renamed studio, Visceral Games (Dead Space, Dante’s Inferno), earlier this year to pursue further careers at Activision Blizzard, not much was known about what they would be up to next at EA’s rival, aside from the news that the pair would be leading a new studio to work on a game based on one of Activision’s past franchises.

Activision Blizzard

This secret new studio, previously only known as ‘Activision Bay Area,’ has now been formally named by Activision as Sledgehammer Games, based in Foster City, California, with Schofield (as Vice President and General Manager of the studio) and Condrey (as Vice President and COO) at the helm.

Sledgehammer is currently “in development on an as-yet-unannounced new videogame,” according to Activision Blizzard, with no other details on the project released. Executive Vice President of Studios at Activision, Dave Stohl did gush a little bit, though:

“Both Glen and Michael have outstanding reputations in the industry through their work as GM and COO of Visceral Games, and as the leadership of the Dead Space development team.

“We are excited to add their combined 30 years of experience and expertise to our management team.”

Glen Schofield followed that up by saying: “Michael and I are thrilled to be building a brand new studio for Activision. This was an opportunity for us to assemble a world-class team made up of developers with a proven track record in delivering top-rated games.”

“Activision Blizzard’s independent studio model is very empowering,” Michael Condrey added. “We have a fantastic new studio facility, the foundation for a world-class team and the backing of the industry’s most profitable game publisher.

“This was a rare opportunity we couldn’t pass up and we are thankful for the support the Activision organization has shown us.”

November 11th, 2009 at 05:28am Under PS3

EA and developer Visceral Games have announced that a demo for their upcoming action adventure game, Dante’s Inferno, will be available for both the Xbox 360 and PS3 this December.

The ‘Gates of Hell’ demo will include the entire opening level and promises to give gamers a taste of the adaptation of Dante Alighieri’s poem, The Divine Comedy. The demo will introduce players to the “game’s hero, epic story and intense action gameplay, tracing Dante’s battles from the surface all the way to the Gates of Hell.”

Players can look forward to stepping into the “fast-paced hack-n-slash combat as they fend off waves of enemies before taking on the ultimate battle against Death. After defeating this boss, Dante will be armed with Death’s scythe, a powerful holy cross, and will be ready to tear open the Gates of Hell. The demo also features two stunning cinematic movies made by Blur.”

“Our main goal from the start of this project has been to create a journey that will make gamers truly feel like they are going through hell,” said executive producer Jonathan Knight. “The demo will give everyone some insight into how we are treating the story and a taste of the gameplay. And with nine more circles of hell to explore once the game comes out in February, we are literally just scratching the surface.”

Dante’s Inferno is described as an “epic descent through Dante Alighieri’s nine circles of hell,” (limbo, lust, gluttony, greed, anger, heresy, violence, fraud and treachery) with each circle featuring unique environments, new creatures and demons, and story elements that are distinct to each circle of sinners. For more information about the game head over to our previous coverage.

Dante’s Inferno will be available across the US for the PS3, Xbox 360 and PSP on the 9th of February 2010 and a few days later on the 12th of February across Europe.
