Seven fighters added to the EA Sports MMA roster

December 16th, 2009 at 03:15pm Under Xbox 360

EA has just announced that a new round of pummelers and pummelees have signed on for EA Sports MMA. The game’s site lists seven new fighters in total: Cung Le, Gilbert Melendez, Robbie Lawler, Ronaldo Souza, Matt Lindland, Scott Smith, and Josh Thomson — a few of whom have participated in UFC fights in the past. Considering the UFC president’s stance toward EA’s game, we have to wonder if their participation jeopardizes their chances with the UFC in the future.

We’ve also got a few in-game screenshots for you to train with. Practice your virtual arm bars by checking ‘em out in the gallery below.

Dante’s Inferno producer hopes for sequel, despite challenges

December 14th, 2009 at 08:00pm Under Xbox 360

Would it be possible to use Dante Alighieri’s spinning corpse in oil derricks, as as a sort of fleshy drill, or perhaps to power a large centrifuge? That might be a real opportunity if Dante’s Inferno executive producer Jonathan Knight gets to make a follow-up to his forthcoming adaptation, a hope he elaborated on for G4.

There’s a hitch though: While Knight knows that EA will want a sequel to the game if it performs well, he’s not sure that the follow up in The Divine Comedy, Purgatorio, will lend itself as well to a game.

… So Visceral can turn one of the great literary works into a game about a scythe-wielding maniac fighting nipple-born monsters, but making a game about the seven-layer Mount of Purgatory that ends in Earthly Paradise is beyond it? Really?

Mass Effect 2 dev profiles Sentinel class, the ‘Jack of All Trades’

December 14th, 2009 at 06:30pm Under Xbox 360

After Mass Effect 2 lead gameplay designer Christina Norman walked us through the Engineer class and it’s sanguinary droid last week, we were wondering how BioWare could possibly appeal to our inner tactician any more. It appears that the developer sought to do just that with this week’s introduction to the Sentinel.

Skilled in both biotic skills (thats space magic, folks) and tech abilities, Norman says the Sentinel is “the only class that can blast through any enemy’s defenses … with or without your squad backing you up.” With only a handful of weeks left before the game’s January 26 release date, it won’t be long before we get to find out exactly how adept the Sentinel is for ourselves.

EA’s Riccitiello: Nintendo ‘learning’ how to support third parties

December 11th, 2009 at 01:15pm Under Wii / Nintendo

More than twenty years and five home consoles later, you’d think Nintendo would get this “third-party support” thing by now. However, EA CEO John Riccitiello says the console manufacturer is still learning how to reach out and offer a hand to games other than their own. “They’ve always been first-party-centric, and they’re learning how to be third-party supportive,” Riccitiello told Gamasutra. Looking at November’s NPD figures, it’s clear that Nintendo has been very good to itself. But is there hope for EA on the Wii? “Third-parties can do a lot better on the platform with the right support from Nintendo.”

What kind of “support” are third parties like EA looking for? Most likely, third parties are looking for co-opted marketing opportunities provided by other first-party platforms, like Sony’s PlayStation.Blog or Microsoft’s MW2-branded hardware. Unfortunately, Nintendo appears content with its hands-off approach to third-party marketing, offsetting all the blame for the failures of GTA: Chinatown Wars and countless other games at the hands of their respective publishers.

Rumor: Dead Space 2 info extracted from Game Informer

December 10th, 2009 at 02:00pm Under Xbox 360

Terrifying video game news site Rely On Horror claims to have recently gotten its hands on the next issue of Game Informer, which contains a pretty comprehensive breakdown of the new methods of Necromorph murder featured in Dead Space 2. According to the site, the Informer article reveals that the game’s designers are trying to make the game spookier, placing hero Isaac Clarke (who learned the ability to speak between games, it seems) in more death-defying situations, and likely a few impossible-to-defy-death situations as well.

According to the report, the game’s action has moved off of the Ishimura, instead placing Clarke on the similarly monster-infested interstellar city Sprawl, which dwarfs the original game’s setting in size. Finally, the article supposedly ends with the developer dropping the following tease regarding multiplayer: “All I can say is it’s really fun, and you’ll get to strategically dismember your friends.” Oh, man — Bushido Laser-Saw confirmed! Or, rather, it might be confirmed. There’s no way to tell for sure until we get our hands on the Clarke-covered magazine.

Watch Shanghai blow up in Army of Two: The 40th Day’s intro

December 10th, 2009 at 12:45pm Under PSP

Modern Warfare 2 has made blowing up American capitals so passé. EA Montreal is far more visionary, preemptively blowing up the largest city of our future masters: Shanghai. The explosive intro to Army of Two: The 40th Day certainly fits the studio’s new “blockbuster-type” focus and reassures doubters that this game will be a more serious affair than the first. Perhaps you’ve noticed the deliberate lack of bromance in this clip?
