Pretty much everyone can guess why No More Heroes is being released again — Marvelous needs money. During a Q&A presentation (PDF link, Japanese) about its fiscal Q2 2010 earnings, Marvelous boldly revealed that three out of its four 2009 Wii releases lost money, though it didn’t say which was the winner.
Muramasa sold 47,000 units in Japan, the company said, not specifying American sales. Arc Rise Fantasia, which will be published Stateside by Ignition, sold 45,000 copies. Little King’s Story sold 26,000 copies in Japan, 37,000 copies in North America, and 67,000 in Europe. Valhalla Knights: Eldar Saga, which came out in September in North America, sold just 16,000 copies (Japanese sales, which started in October, are not mentioned). Harvest Moon: Tree of Tranquility on Wii somehow sold 57,000 units in 2009 despite being a 2007 release in Japan, a 2008 release in America, and not out until October in Europe and Australia.
Because of lower development costs, Marvelous said, PSP software was more successful, with four out of five releases making money on similar sales numbers. Half-Minute Hero was Marvelous’s overall best-performing title, at 70,000 copies sold.

Square Enix recently chose to attack with its annual earnings report, and among the 12-page PDF file’s barrage of numbers, things look pretty good for the company. Net sales for the six months ending September 30, 2009 were up 33 percent over the same period last year to 91 billion yen ($1 billion), while operating income was also up by 39 percent to 13 billion yen ($144.5 million) over the same period last year. It’s not all roses and Dragon Quest IX sales, however — net income was down almost 58 percent to 2.7 billion yen ($30 million).
The statement also talks about the acquisition and assimilation of Eidos in direct proportion to Square Enix’s games group division — which includes video games across all platforms and online games for personal computers. Through the aid of titles like Batman: Arkham Asylum, Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days and the aforementioned Dragon Quest IX, the games division rose its net sales and operating income by 117 percent and 63 percent to 4.8 billion yen ($53 million) and 1.0 billion yen ($11 million), respectively.
As for the company’s upcoming darling, Final Fantasy XIII, Square Enix prez Yoichi Wada spoke about concern regarding the title’s projected domestic sales. Basically, he’s not concerned at all! “PS3 sales continue to increase. We’re bundling PS3 and FFXIII, and can expect even further sales increases. Orders for FFXIII are definitely not bad,” he said. While he didn’t reiterate anything as bold as six million, Wada did claim that the game is expected to sell in the millions.

Namco Bandai has reported a net loss of ¥6.04 billion ($66.7 million) for the first half of its fiscal year, which began in April. During the same period last year, the company posted a net income of ¥1.28 billion ($14.14 million). Despite this year’s first-half hiccup, the publisher still expects to earn ¥8.5 billion ($93.6 million) in net income by the end of its fiscal year (ending March 31, 2010). After all, there are those 2.5 million copies of
Tekken 6 waiting to be sold.
Namco Bandai’s software sales for the period were led by the Ben 10 franchise, as Alien Force and Protector of the Earth combined to sell approximately 810,000 units (not exactly Guitar Hero numbers, eh?). Even with Tekken 6 in its second-half roster, Namco must be pulling for a miracle. But then, the holidays are a magical time.

Though Square Enix has yet to say anything concrete about releasing Dragon Quest IX outside of Japan, Nintendo has discussed its own plans to market the title. Last year, Satoru Iwata mentioned his intention to promote the game in the West, and during this week’s financial results Q&A session, senior managing director Shinji Hatano reiterated that intention.
“Hatano said that helping to sell Dragon Quest IX outside Japan is part of a larger effort on the part of Nintendo to partner with software makers to sell their games for Nintendo hardware,” GameLife summarized. Maybe eventually, Square Enix will announce this game.
Also on the subject of Dragon Quest IX, at the same event, Shigeru Miyamoto praised DQIX’s communication mode, which allows players to collect and interact with others’ characters passively. “Dragon Quest IX’s passerby communication has caused the number of people walking around outside using their DS systems to increase greatly, and I’m thinking that I could probably make something unique like that,” he said. And then he said “Also, recently, we got a cat.” Hint, hint.

The
DSi LL (or XL) isn’t just for the poorly sighted or hugely handed. In his
financial results briefing, Satoru Iwata revealed another purpose for the jumbo system: playing with crowds. “Nintendo DSi LL features not only bigger monitor screens,” Iwata said, “but an improved view angle on the screens to make it the first portable system that can be enjoyed with people surrounding the gamer.”
He envisions the DSi XL as allowing for a “new play style where those who are surrounding the game player can also join in one way or the other to the game play.” Tomodachi Collection, one of the best-selling DS games of the quarter in Japan, is named specifically as a game that already benefits from having friends nearby. “Because communications and interactions with other family members and your friends are one of the key elements of the game, the fun aspect is intensified when other people can watch how you play in comparison with when you are playing by yourself.”
As a bonus, your friends can help you hold the system up.

It would appear that Nintendo made the right decision in finally getting around to releasing Professor Layton and the Diabolical Box worldwide, as the company was able to trade that box for one filled with cash money. The company released a supplement to its earnings report, listing the million-selling first-party Wii and DS games of its Q3 (April-September), and Diabolical Box made the list with 1.26 million units sold. The entirety of that 1.26 million comes from outside of Japan, since it wasn’t a first-party game in Japan, and it was released in 2007.
The other new additions to the million-seller club on DS: Tomodachi Collection, the Mii communication game, and Pokemon HeartGold and SoulSilver, which mysteriously managed to rack up 10,000 overseas sales despite not having been released outside of Japan. Is Nintendo tracking import retailers differently somehow?
On Wii, Wii Sports Resort has reached 6.97 million units worldwide, and Wii Fit Plus has already sold 2.13 million, a nice complement to the 4.28 million that the first Wii Fit sold in the last quarter.

At a press conference about Nintendo’s earnings, president Satoru Iwata blamed a weak first-party Wii lineup in part for the decline in Wii sales, and for the corresponding decline in profits. “Wii is stalled,” he said. “We didn’t release good software continually, and let the good mood cool.”
Siliconera gathered up Nintendo’s Wii lineup to illustrate Iwata’s point. The first half of 2009, the period described by Nintendo’s earnings report, was largely anchored by New Play Control GameCube ports. The second half of the year saw major sellers like Wii Fit Plus accompanied by somewhat niche titles like Endless Ocean 2 and Sin and Punishment 2 — not that we’re complaining about those games! But with New Super Mario Bros.and continued sales of Wii Fit Plus and Wii Sports Resort, it should look better than the first half.
It’s likely that not even Nintendo wanted to get in the way of Monster Hunter 3, which did turn out to be a big success — and one that helped Nintendo achieve the level of hardware sales it did, thanks to a bundle. However, with that out in August, it didn’t factor into the first-half results.

Nintendo’s profits took a 52 percent dive in the first-half of 2009 compared to the same period last year, which sounds horrible — until the realization hits that the company still brought in $766 million in pure profit. Yes, Nintendo is still doing all right, even as it cut its profit forecast for the fiscal year ending March 2010 from $3.3 billion to merely $2.53 billion. Tragic, we know.
The Wii has now sold 56.14 million units globally, while the DS has reached 113.48 million in unit sales. There’s been a general slowdown of software sales, however, as the House of Mario has had fewer high-profile releases so far this year — we count only: Wii Sports Resort. Although investors may see the profit decline as a bad thing, it’s not like Nintendo’s plump plumber is going to be forced to cut back on those hearty meals any time soon.

Throwing stuff at stuff is okay, but what Wii owners really like is stretching. That’s the takeaway we’ve gleaned from EA’s quarterly financial results, which reveal that EA Sports Active, selling “over 1.8 million copies in the quarter,” is not just a genuine hit — it’s the publisher’s best-selling Wii title to date.
If EA hadn’t already announced that expansions and versions for other consoles were coming out, now is right about when we would say “there are totally going to be sequels to this.” Although, we suppose, technically, the second EA Sports released a game was the second we knew there’d be another one in a year.
