We really should keep a count of how many times “raw” and “brutal” show up in the Kane & Lynch 2: Dog Days marketing materials. Anyway, above you’ll find the debut trailer for IO Interactive’s “raw and brutal crime shooter” – so says the email it came attached to – that shows Kane … wait, Lynch longingly staring at a bottle of pills, while Lynch, er, Kane has apparently survived a big shootout and is coming to visit the other guy in Shanghai. Ah, yes. Kane and Lynch are the Rosencrantz and Guildenstern for a new generation.

A recent Square Enix press release has dropped some rather unfortunate news in our laps: Just Cause 2 won’t be hitting North American store shelves until March 23, 2010 (or March 26 for Europe, Australia and the Middle East). That’s quite a ways past the title’s original Q3 2009 launch date — in fact, that’s two whole Qs later than we initially hoped.
Oh, well. It’s difficult for us to get in a huff about the game’s distant launch date. See, as soon as we feel the huff approaching, we simply watch a bit of Just Cause 2’s grapple-and-parachute-centric gameplay, and then we feel inexplicably soothed to our very core.

IO Interactive has taken the wraps off Kane & Lynch 2: Dog Days, the sequel to 2007’s Kane & Lynch: Dead Men. Dog Days will be available for the PS3, Xbox 360 and PC in 2010, released under the EIDOS game label.
Kane & Lynch 2: Dog Days is described as a “raw and brutal crime shooter,” and promises to immerse players in an intense story experience through the gritty underworld of Shaghai.
The game introduces a new “never before seen” visual experience that is inspired by documentary filmmakers and the user-generated era. Gamers can also look forward to new fragile alliance multiplayer modes. According to the press release, “Every aspect of the game has been designed to deliver a fresh perspective to the words ‘intensity’ and ‘realism’ in video games.”
“Gamers are always looking for something new and that is exactly what they are going to get with Kane & Lynch 2™: Dog Days,” said Niels Jørgensen, general manager of IO Interactive. “
A special thanks to gamers worldwide for their feedback. They are certainly in for a shock as we, with immense pride, welcome back our two dear, violent and somewhat unfortunate friends.”

Square Enix Europe has officially announced Kane and Lynch 2: Dog Days, confirming that the trademark application from July and the recent viral video portended the return of the notorious duo — well, “notorious” for all the wrong reasons. The action vets at IO Interactive claim to have infused Dog Days with “a new visual experience … inspired by documentary filmmakers and the user-generated era.”
We’ve placed the two K&L2 viral videos after the break. The game will release in 2010 under the Eidos brand for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC.

After the extended bidding and acquisition process surrounding Square Enix’s buy-out of the UK-based Eidos Interactive, the deal has now come to a close with the formal rebranding of Eidos as Square Enix Europe.

Square Enix Europe represents “the unified business unit” that comprises sales and marketing offices in the UK, France and Germany, which will handle the promotion of the group’s games across Europe and PAL territories, as well as the management of the company’s developers including Crystal Dynamics, IO Interactive, Beautiful Game Studios, Square Enix London Studios and Eidos Montréal.
President and chief executive officer of Square Enix Europe, Phil Rogers said of the announcement: “Today marks a major achievement towards the goals we announced in July and represents the creation of an efficient and powerful structure for game development and publishing.
“We have a formidable product-line up which truly showcases the diversity of our exceptional gaming brands.”
Square Enix now has access to a multitude of franchises brimming with future potential previously under the ownership of Eidos, including Tomb Raider, Hitman and Deus Ex, adding to their own considerable line-up spearheaded by the likes of Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest.

Square Enix recently chose to attack with its annual earnings report, and among the 12-page PDF file’s barrage of numbers, things look pretty good for the company. Net sales for the six months ending September 30, 2009 were up 33 percent over the same period last year to 91 billion yen ($1 billion), while operating income was also up by 39 percent to 13 billion yen ($144.5 million) over the same period last year. It’s not all roses and Dragon Quest IX sales, however — net income was down almost 58 percent to 2.7 billion yen ($30 million).
The statement also talks about the acquisition and assimilation of Eidos in direct proportion to Square Enix’s games group division — which includes video games across all platforms and online games for personal computers. Through the aid of titles like Batman: Arkham Asylum, Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days and the aforementioned Dragon Quest IX, the games division rose its net sales and operating income by 117 percent and 63 percent to 4.8 billion yen ($53 million) and 1.0 billion yen ($11 million), respectively.
As for the company’s upcoming darling, Final Fantasy XIII, Square Enix prez Yoichi Wada spoke about concern regarding the title’s projected domestic sales. Basically, he’s not concerned at all! “PS3 sales continue to increase. We’re bundling PS3 and FFXIII, and can expect even further sales increases. Orders for FFXIII are definitely not bad,” he said. While he didn’t reiterate anything as bold as six million, Wada did claim that the game is expected to sell in the millions.

The ESRB has exposed a new round of PSone Classics for PS3 and PSP on its
ratings site, including Naughty Dog creative director — and
Uncharted creator — Amy Hennig’s 32-bit opus,
Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver. Other titles recently rated for re-release via PlayStation network include
Bomberman Party Edition,
Fighting Force,
Dirt Jockey and
International Track & Field.
After last week’s deluge of classic PlayStation games gone downloadable on PSN, we were befuddled by the utter lack of any new additions with yesterday’s update. We could very likely be looking at the next round in the list — the only question is when Sony will push them out the digital distribution door.
[Thanks, Dylan!]

Eidos and Warner Bros. have announced that a free downloadable map pack will be available for Batman: Arkham Asylum this September.
The Insane Night Map Pack will include two challenge maps and will be available for the PS3, Xbox 360 and PC from the 17th of September. The new maps promise to “hone [players] FreeFlow Combat skills and test their Invisible Predator prowess.”

Read on below to find out more about the two maps.
“In the ‘Totally Insane’ FreeFlow Combat map, players will be tested to their fullest as scores of escaped lunatics bear down upon BATMAN as they make their escape through the asylum’s secure records facility. These fast-moving foes will challenge all but the most practiced players, with quick reactions and expert timing needed to fend off wave upon wave of insane inmates, bent on taking down the DARK KNIGHT.”
“In the ‘Nocturnal Hunter’ Invisible Predator map, players take on a wholly different approach, practicing their predatory skills to remain in the shadows, utilizing the Arkham watchtowers and Batman’s arsenal of gadgets to gain the upper hand on The Joker’s army of goons patrolling below.”
Batman: Arkham Asylum is available now for the PS3 and Xbox 360. The PC version of the game is scheduled to hit shelves today.

Guitar Hero 5, which is like the tenth (give or take a couple) installment in the series, has resonated with UK consumers and hit a high note atop the Chart Track all-formats chart. The Dark Knight of Arkham Asylum — who was perched above the charts for two weeks — slipped off the top to the number three spot, with Colin McRae: Dirt 2 taking the silver.
The Beatles: Rock Band premiered at the number four spot, which some are sure to find disappointing. Both Guitar Hero and Rock Band have previously debuted at the fourth and sixth spot, respectively, with previous iterations. Music games may be on a sales decline, but they apparently still know how to make an entrance.

Spider-Man’s got nothing on Just Cause 2’s returning protagonist, Rico Rodriguez. Sure, Spidey’s got a whole host of arachnid super-enhancements — but Rico’s various modes of aerial travel make web-swinging seem so … pedestrian. The dev diary posted above gives a great look at our hero’s proclivity for base jumping, hookshotting, parachuting and helicopter-jacking. We’re sure Isaac Newton would have a few hang-ups about the poetic liberties Just Cause 2 is taking with physics — but you’ll hear no objections from us.
