The man known as Major Nelson has been so kind as to remind us all that child accounts for Facebook, Twitter and Last.fm have now been enabled for US Xbox 360 users. Once granted parental permission, Xbox Live child account holders over the age of 13 will be able to access these applications. The Major reminds everyone to make sure to select automatic logins for all the applications, otherwise you will be prompted for parental permission every time an app is launched. We’d have to agree with his advice. After all, Mom coming in to give you and your friends Tang and lemon squares: Cool. Mom coming in to log you into Facebook: Not cool.

When Microsoft rolled out Twitter, Facebook, and Last.fm support for the Xbox 360, a number of users were less than impressed. Specifically, those with child Xbox Live accounts were not allowed to use any of the new applications. Outside the US, Microsoft has now released an update that allows child accounts to access these features, so long as parental permission is given. Major Nelson advises users to set each application to log in automatically upon first activation. Otherwise, those with child accounts will be prompted for parental permission every time the application is launched.
Fear not, US gamers, the update will hit American shores on December 15.

Bioware, a division of EA, recently announced that it has set new records for site traffic in EA’s substantial network of affiliated sites this year with its DragonAge.com domain, while a new record for new user registrations has also been set with the developer’s social networking site, Social.bioware.com, with over five million users signing up at the site after the release of the developer’s latest game, Dragon Age: Origins.
Additionally, 30 000 people have signed up at the Dragon Age fan page on Facebook since June this year, making it the fastest-growing EA property on the social networking site.
Now that Dragon Age: Origins has been released, the anticipation for Mass Effect 2 is clearly leading to similar statistics for that game – a 33% increase in traffic has already been observed since the Special Edition announcement early in November.
Bioware is also relaunching its MassEffect.com website with a new design and more connectivity to the developer’s social networking community.
“We want to thank our fans for their enthusiasm and ongoing support,” said Dr. Ray Muzyka, co-founder, BioWare and Group General Manager of the RPG/MMO Group of EA. “The passion within the community is not only helping drive momentum for Dragon Age referrals but our actively engaged fan base is eager for future content releases, which we are committed to deliver.
“We could not be more excited about the outstanding community growth,” Muzyka continued. “The connection we are fostering with our fans is direct and personal. This tremendous community will help set the stage for an incredible Mass Effect 2 launch on January 26th.”
Be sure to check out Social.bioware.com and get connected!

EA has been making strides in recent years to move towards an online model for the distribution of its games with the implementation of its own digital distribution network and the continued experiment of the third-person free-to-play action shooter, Battlefield Heroes.

These online ambitions were recently hammered home with the publisher’s acquisition of social online gaming company Playfish, as well as
the company’s restructuring process (resulting in 1500 jobs being cut) to specifically target the online, and even social networking, arena.
Now it seems the Command & Conquer series is set to follow EA’s online strategy, if words from head of the franchise, Jon Van Caneghem, are anything to go by.
When discussing a range of topics including the future of Command & Conquer, the idea of ‘software as a service,’ the strategy genre in general and attempts to popularise the brand, Van Caneghem said:
“Look what online has done for RPGs over the last 10 years,” he said. “All the other categories are following suit… we’re looking forward to building something to be a leader in that space.”

“[Online] allows you to do everything you would have expected from a boxed game,” Van Caneghem continued, “but it adds a lot more to it… being connected and connected with players, and persistence, the social elements of playing against each other with other friends.”
“What you’re seeing with all the social gamers on Facebook… they are actually already playing strategy games whether they know it or not. Taking a franchise like Command and Conquer and expanding it to a wider audience is part of the strategy.”
What say you, readers? Is the scramble for online services and distribution a sign of the times, or the way of the future?

According to Microsoft, nearly two million Xbox Live users logged into Facebook through the console’s new built-in social media applications. Based on a vague estimate provided by Microsoft, it appears that around ten percent of all Xbox Live Gold accounts used the application within its first week of availability; however, it’s possible many of those users only logged in to see the new feature in action.
Microsoft also stated the addition of Last.fm — a music streaming service currently only available for US and UK gamers — prompted nearly one million new profile activations. In its first week, Last.fm users streamed “more than 120 million minutes” of music to their Xbox 360 consoles. If we’ve learned one thing from these numbers, it’s that people love to click on shiny new boxes.

As a resident of the State of New York, in the future you may be able to receive advance emergency warnings of natural or man-made disasters via Xbox LIVE, the PlayStation Network, the Wii’s online service, and other online gaming networks, if current tests are anything to go by.
According to New York State Deputy CIO Rico Singleton, in the event of a dangerous and life-threatening event, such as extreme weather or (heaven forbid) a terrorist attack, the state’s Emergency Management Office intends to be able to issue alerts over online gaming networks, as well as regular channels, in order to best reach and warn younger residents.
Singleton believes this to be a good plan “considering the amount of time our youth spend on video games,” he said.
No further details were released on how such a warning system would work in practice, but Singleton did confirm that the initiative is in the testing phase.
These tests, and the initiative as a whole, forms part of a wider, more far-reaching programme entitled Empire 2.0, which will see state authorities making greater use of online social networks such as Facebook, Linked In and Second Life to improve local government’s transparency, participation and collaboration with the public.

Last week Microsoft launched new social media features for Xbox Live including Facebook, Twitter and Last.fm. Yesterday the publisher confirmed that since then millions of Xbox Live users have used these new features.
At least two million Xbox Live users have logged into Facebook using their consoles in the first week of its availability according to Microsoft spokesman David Dennis. This equates to roughly one tenth of the 20 million total Xbox Live users trying Facebook in the first week alone.
Last.fm has also proved to be popular with half a million accounts being created in the first 24 hours of availability, with 120 million minutes of music having been streamed in the first week. Dennis did not confirm how many Xbox Live users have made use of the Twitter feature other than to say that there have been “tweets from nearly every market where we have Xbox Live.”
In case you were wondering how the new Zune marketplace (formerly known as the Xbox Live Marketplace) is doing, 1.7 million Xbox Live users have visited and watched video there.

Speaking to VentureBeat, Xbox Live general manager Marc Whitten discussed the recent round of Xbox Live bans. According to Whitten, banning users from Xbox Live is “a cat and mouse game.” Said Whitten, “These were people that were pirating software.” He added that Microsoft looks at banning users “from a safety and anti-cheating perspective” and that the company looks out for its partners. Responding to the widely reported story that Microsoft banned over a million Xbox Live users, Whitten said that the figure is inaccurate. “I cannot explain to you why people would think it was a million people,” said Whitten, then adding quite succinctly, “It wasn’t a million people.”
Whitten went on to state his belief that Microsoft does “a really good job” of monitoring the activity on Xbox Live, specifically in terms of piracy and online harassment. He concluded that the company is “committed to making [Xbox Live] better and better.”
The interview also covers the recent integration of Facebook on Xbox, the effect Modern Warfare 2 had on Live activity (hint: a big one) and whether or not we’ll be playing Facebook games on our consoles anytime soon. Don’t expect a straight answer on that last one though, as the closes Whitten gets is, “In the future, they will move much closer together.”
