PSP Minis playable on PS3 with firmware update 3.15

December 8th, 2009 at 11:30am Under PSP

PS3 is getting yet another firmware update — this time optional — “very soon” according to a post on the European PlayStation.Blog. The pre-Christmas update brings a feature we reported on earlier: support for PSP Minis on the PS3. Like PSone classics, a single purchase from the PlayStation Store will work on both platforms. If you’ve bought a Mini and want to play it on your PS3, you’ll be able to access it from the Store’s archived Download List.

In addition to adding Minis support, update 3.15 will simplify the process of moving data from one PS3 to another. For example, if you own both a PS3 Phat and Slim, you’ll be able to connect the two systems via a LAN cable and transfer data from one system to the next. For more details on how to do just that, visit the PlayStation.Blog.

PSP Firmware 6.20 available now

November 19th, 2009 at 09:41am Under PSP

PSP Slim

The next firmware update for your PSP, 6.20, is now live and available to download, and adds a bit of functionality that owners of the handheld will definitely appreciate, such as support for the Digital Comics Reader, as well as extended video and photo functionality.

You can read through the list of additions thanks to the PSP 6.20 update below:

Digital Comics Reader

– PlayStation Network Digital Comics is a new service launching in December. It will allow you to download hundreds of classic and new comics from the PlayStation Store and read them page by page or frame by frame on your PSP system.

Firmware update (v6.20) includes the Digital Comics reader application, which you’ll find under a new section called “Extras” on the XMB.

Please note, the comic reader is an additional download; once you’ve loaded (v6.20) onto your system, simply click on the comic reader icon under “Extras” to download it to your PSP. Visit www.playstationcomics.com for more information.

In addition, you’ll be able to try out a free digital comic sample from the service soon.

Export video/photo playlists

– This is a new feature that allows you to export your video and photo playlists from your PC to your PSP system through Media Go.

Download the latest version of Media Go (v1.3) for this and a few additional enhancements.

PSP firmware 6.20 now available

November 19th, 2009 at 12:50am Under PSP

Not to be overshadowed by its bigger brother, a new PSP firmware has gone live tonight. Update 6.20 adds the ability to export video and photo playlists from an updated version of Media Go. However, the biggest addition to this update is the PlayStation Network Digital Comics Reader in a new “Extras” section of the XMB. While the Reader can be downloaded tonight, the service won’t go live until December in Australia, Ireland, New Zealand, South Africa, the United Kingdom and the United States. Japan will be getting a manga service slightly earlier. French, Italian, German and Spanish stores will follow in early 2010. Here’s the full change log:

  • The importing of playlists from the Media Go application is now supported under [Video].
  • The importing of playlists from the PlayStation 3 system or the Media Go application is now supported under [Photo].
  • The [TV] category has been integrated into the new [Extras] category in the XMB menu. Compatible models: PSP-2000, PSP-2005, PSP-3000, PSP-N1000, PSP-N1005

PSP firmware 6.10 is live and ready to Go

October 1st, 2009 at 12:38am Under PSP

Version 6.10 of Sony’s handheld’s firmware announced earlier this evening is now ready for download. Hit the System Update option from the Settings section of your XMB, download, install and let us know what you think of the “mood music” SensMe whips up from your song library. Much to our disappointment, initial testing reveals that Sony didn’t implement our “I just made an expensive impulse purchase” mood after all.

Holy do-over, Badman! New Euro demo coming along with updated PSP firmware

September 7th, 2009 at 04:50pm Under PSP

Last week, a European demo of Holy Invasion of Privacy, Badman! What Did I Do to Deserve This? was released on PSN, requiring PSP firmware 5.55 to run. One minor issue: firmware 5.55 isn’t available for download. That means that the Badman demo is effectively exclusive to people who bought Dissidia Final Fantasy or Soulcalibur Broken Destiny, two games that have the new firmware on the disc. What did Holy Invasion of Privacy, Badman! do to deserve this?

NIS’s Allison Walter outlined the company’s plan to correct this unfortunate situation on the PlayStation Blog, inadvertently announcing the release of an upcoming firmware in the process. “We’re going to re-release it next Thursday, 10 Sept,” she said in response to user Killzone_Kid, “by which time Firmware 6.0 should have been released. Sorry for the wait!” You’ll be repelling heroes from your subterranean lair in no time!
[Thanks, Kenneth]

What’s new with PSP Go’s firmware 5.70?

August 14th, 2009 at 10:30am Under PSP

What firmware is your PSP running? 5.51? Lame! If you go into the future and snag a PSP Go, you’ll be able to use firmware 5.70. But, what’s new about the upcoming PSP software revision? Good question. Digital Foundry got their hands on an early version of the system and discovered that not much has changed. In fact, due to the PSP Go’s lack of a UMD drive, many options appear to be missing in the firmware.

For example (and obviously), all settings related to UMD Video are missing on the PSP Go’s firmware. More bizarrely, “Battery Information,” which displays how much battery life is remaining, appears to be gone. Additionally, “Backlight Auto-Adjust” seems to be missing from the Power Save Settings menu. We’re not entirely sure why these options are gone. Could it simply be because it’s an early version of the firmware?

Obviously, some time remains before Sony officially releases the Go and firmware 5.70 to the world. It’ll be interesting to see if any of these changes affect the older UMD-equipped versions of the PSP. Considering firmware works slightly differently on each of the 1000, 2000 and 3000 models, we’re sure to see differences evolve across the platforms over time.

Looks like DSi firmware 1.4 is defeated already

August 6th, 2009 at 07:14pm Under Wii / Nintendo

The site for the R4i DSi flash cart posted a video (see it after the break) demonstrating what appears to be the R4i running on a DSi system with the 1.4 firmware. You know, the firmware that was released not even a week ago, and removed flash cart compatibility? Yeah, that one. The video demonstrates a retail game ROM, which is not particularly awesome, but does serve as evidence of flash cart compatibility. The site currently doesn’t mention whether this is accomplished through an R4i firmware update or through new hardware. We’ll find out more as more flash carts pick up on whatever technique is in use.

If 1.4 has truly been defeated, homebrew users will be able to upload photos to Facebook and play Magnetic Shaving Derby! Magical.

DSi Facebook update available in Europe, also blocks homebrew

July 30th, 2009 at 04:10pm Under DS

The good news: DSi firmware 1.4 is now available in Europe, bringing the Facebook photo uploading capability along with it, according to an announcement by Nintendo. If you want to snap pics from your DSi and upload them to Facebook (after altering them with the DSi’s image manipulation stuff, if you like), awesome!

The bad news: DSi firmware 1.4 blocks flash carts. If you’ve been using an Acekard2i or a DSTTi to run homebrew on your DSi, you should probably not download it. If, on the other hand, you’ve been using a DSi flash cart to play retail games, we encourage you to update immediately. Gotta have Facebook, right?

New firmware readies PSP for VidZone content

June 11th, 2009 at 06:30pm Under PSP

A minor firmware update for PSP arrived this morning. This brings the portable handheld up to firmware version 5.51. The EU PlayStation blog notes this new update “improves PSP System software stability during use of some features,” though doesn’t provide any further details. We here at Joystiq hypothesize this quick little fix is readying PSP for the VidZone service which just launched today.

The firmware is roughly 27MB, which is a file size close to the VidZone update on PS3 (23MB). For those unfamiliar with VidZone, it’s a service that gives PSP and PS3 users free access to music videos via PSN. It’s currently only available in specific European countries, so don’t go rushing out to download all at once.
