Left 4 Dead 2 DLC ‘The Passing’ to feature L4D1 cast

December 14th, 2009 at 04:00pm Under Xbox 360

Not content with unleashing a full-blown zombie apocalypse, Valve has come up with the second most socially awkward event imaginable: inviting characters from the original Left 4 Dead to hang out in the sequel’s first DLC campaign. Bill, Louis, Zoey and Francis will meet with the stars of Left 4 Dead 2 in “The Passing,” which Valve VP of marketing Doug Lombardi calls “the most important campaign in the Left 4 Dead story, as all the Survivors are being called together in one campaign.” It’s targeted for release in early 2010 on Xbox 360 and PC.

In addition to a co-op campaign (set in rural Georgia) and a new “co-operative challenge mode of play,” The Passing will offer new content for Survival, Versus and Scavenge modes. Playing as the L4D2 cast, you can also expect to encounter a new melee weapon, firearm and “uncommon common” zombie.

We can’t wait to meet up with last year’s survivors again … oh, assuming they really are still survivors.

Modern Warfare 2 patch available now, Javelin glitch tossed out

December 11th, 2009 at 11:45am Under Xbox 360

Huzzah! No more of your intense Headquarters Pro matches will be interrupted by gargantuan, killer shockwaves expelled by morally dubious combatants. That is to say, Modern Warfare 2’s Javelin glitch, which enabled a dirty, cheating player to instantly detonate upon death, was fixed earlier this morning by a patch for the Xbox 360 version of the game. According to a recent tweet from Infinity Ward’s Robert Bowling, the PS3 version of the game has already received the patch.

In addition to removing the Javelin’s unadvertised self-immolation feature, the patch also fixes the equally insidious “unlimited care packages” glitch, and fixes a few areas where players could exploit gaps in the game’s geography. In a perfect world, Infinity Ward would have also sent parcels to the houses of anyone who leveraged these exploits — parcels full of bees. The bad kind. The kind you see on the Discovery Channel. The ones that can kill a full-grown elephant with a surprisingly small swarm.

Left 4 Dead 2 patch on PC now, Xbox 360 ‘later this month’

December 10th, 2009 at 03:00pm Under Xbox 360

In its ongoing support of Left 4 Dead 2 on the PC, Valve has issued another patch for the game, fixing a number of problems including physics crashes and hit boxes on the Charger, Jockey and Spitter. Some of the exploits PC gamers have stumbled upon have also been eradicated, including incapped survivors improving their weapon accuracy by holding the crouch button — though we wouldn’t call that an exploit so much as a natural evolution in the face of the zombie threat. Good, old-fashioned human ingenuity is what will win us this war, people!

You can head past the break for the full patch notes. An update for the Xbox 360 will be available “later this month.”

Analysts: Modern Warfare 2 composed over 22 percent of November game sales

December 9th, 2009 at 11:30am Under Xbox 360

In one day, the NPD Group will release its game sales report for the month of November, which should reveal the (near) exact number of units Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 has sold in the US thus far. In the meantime, Gamespot reported on two analysts who have predicted the portion of November software sales that were made up of Warfare purchases. Industry analyst superstar Michael Pachter says the game accounts for 23 percent of total game sales. However, Pacific Crest analyst Evan Wilson has it pegged at 25 percent of total November sales.

Wilson added that this feat is made especially impressive due to his firm’s prediction that “this November’s sales will match the month’s highest historical total on record.” In related news, news stories dealing with Modern Warfare 2 composed 67.2 percent of all news stories over the past month. Oh, wait — now it’s 67.5 percent!

The Conduit on sale for $12 at NewEgg

December 8th, 2009 at 07:45pm Under Wii / Nintendo

Given that The Conduit was neither a commercial nor critical success, you may have passed on the once hyped shooter from High Voltage. NewEgg looks to be clearing out some end-of-year inventory and those boxes of The Conduit have got to go! For a mere $12 (shipping’s free), the game’s yours and, while not the best bang for your buck, the bargain buy could be justified in so much as The Conduit represents a valiant, if flawed effort to build a sound FPS for Wii hardware. Or, maybe you’re just looking for a cheap gift for your little bro. Bingo, this is it.

Wada wants Japanese gamers to stop discriminating against Western games

December 8th, 2009 at 06:00pm Under Xbox 360

[Hachimaki]

Square Enix CEO Yoichi Wada wants Japanese gamers to be more open to Western games. In a Japanese TV interview (excerpted and translated by Kotaku), Wada said, “Even now, there have been people in Japan using the label youge- (literally ‘Western games’) with a terribly discriminatory meaning.” While the concern about Western games may seem uncharacteristic for the head of a Japanese publisher, this is the Japanese publisher who just purchased Eidos, and who is currently marketing Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 in Japan.

“I’d like them to try it once,” Wada said about Modern Warfare 2. “If they play it once, they’d realize how incorrect that label is.” Just like the subtitles.

Lance Henriksen reprises ‘Bishop’ role in Aliens vs. Predator

December 8th, 2009 at 03:30pm Under Xbox 360

Lance Henriksen, who was most memorably cleaved asunder as android (ahem, “artificial lifeform”) Bishop, will see another continuation of his Aliens film role in Rebellion’s Alien vs. Predator game. Henriksen plays Karl Bishop Weyland, the descendant of Weyland-Yutani corporation founder Charles Bishop Weyland. The 69-year-old actor is happy with his virtual likeness (seen above) and is quoted as saying, “I might score from this game!” Joystiq is quoted as saying, “Maybe if it’s from a facehugger, Lance.”

Considering Henriksen’s appearance in one of the most gore-riffic scenes in film (at the time), we should reiterate that Aliens vs. Predator will release in February 2010 on PS3, Xbox 360 and PC — in countries that don’t require toned-down violence. Rebellion has stated that it will not be “releasing a sanitized or cut down version for territories where adults are not considered by their governments to be able to make their own entertainment choices.” Sorry, Australia and Germany.

Modern Warfare 2’s poor translation, censorship in Japan draws ire

December 4th, 2009 at 02:28pm Under Xbox 360

When Square Enix enlisted to localize Modern Warfare 2 for Japan, the publisher went above and beyond the call of duty. The game would be issued a complete Japanese-dialog makeover — whereas the first Modern Warfare localization was simply subtitled — in response to a “strong desire from Activision to widen the entrance for beginning FPS players,” as Square Enix told Famitsu. However, some gamers are reporting that the extra effort has fallen short, citing numerous translation errors in the localized game. [Insert your Bill Murray joke here.]

Additionally, Japanese site My Game Flash has rounded up other complaints about the localization, most notably an alteration to the sensationalized “No Russian” mission. Rather than delete the mission (as in the censored Russian version), Square Enix had the Japanese version of the mission adjusted to restrict the player from participating in a terrorist assault on an airport. If the player does engage civilian targets, it’s game over.

Square Enix has posted an update on the Modern Warfare 2 Japanese site describing the full Japanese language and subtitle tracks and warning of the “No Russian” edits, but has not announced plans to patch the translation errors or change the limitations on the censored mission. The publisher has cited technical limitations, which prevent selectable English and Japanese language tracks. Head past the break to see some footage of the Japanese version of MW2, courtesy of andriasang.

Left 4 Dead 2 sold 2 million at retail in 2 weeks

December 1st, 2009 at 02:00pm Under Xbox 360

Valve apparently threw Boomer bile all over Left 4 Dead 2, because hordes of consumers gobbled up two million retail copies globally since its release a couple weeks ago. Valve won’t release the Steam digital distribution sales data, so that’s not included in the retail count. According to the developer, sales are currently double that of the original, with “Black Friday” helping to push copies into the hands of players (who now have their hands full with two Tanks, a Spitter, a Hunter, and a Jockey coming in for the kill).

Valve also noted that information about L4D2’s first batch of downloadable content would be coming very soon.

Brink moved to Fall 2010; watch its S.M.A.R.T. system now

November 30th, 2009 at 08:30pm Under Xbox 360

Back at E3, we were briefly shown Brink’s S.M.A.R.T. system for navigating around the Bethesda-published FPS’ environment. Our play session was mainly focused on the combat and quests of the game at the time. Now, Splash Damage’s own Paul Wedgewood has been kind enough to demonstrate how it works in-game, courtesy of the G4 video past the break.

Another interesting item brought up in this video is Brink’s new release date: Fall 2010. Last we heard, it was destined for a Spring 2010 release. Not so anymore!
