Last year’s free Xbox Live Arcade game from the Unlock Xbox contest, Dash of Destruction, may not have been the best game we ever played, but it was certainly far from the worst. Also, it had that whole costing nothing thing going for it, so that helped our opinions considerably. This year, our chances of getting a fun game have doubled, with the contest’s 1,500 competitors vying for two spots rather than one.
The final eight contestants have been culled from the initial submissions (listed after the break), and are now available to be voted on over at the contest’s website, ultimately determining three game ideas to be given final pitches at Microsoft. From there, we get two XBLA games full of Doritos’ “bold, intense” branding — and at the very least some free Achievements.

EA has opened the garage door and rolled out its
Team Racing Pack for
Need For Speed: Shift, adding five new cars and a cooperative online racing mode to its superb driving game. Available today for Xbox 360 and PC, the DLC is priced at … wait, it’s free? Five cars and a new mode are
free? This is obviously an error and the DLC should be downloaded before EA starts asking like 1500 space bucks for it. Oh, EA did this
intentionally? Kudos, giant publisher. (We’re still not sure if this is some kind of trick.)
XBL Gold members can grab the expansion from the Xbox Live Marketplace at this link. PS3 owners in the UK will find the free DLC on PSN today, with the US PlayStation Store getting it next Thursday, December 10.

If you’re on the fence about Sony’s upcoming PSP Digital Comics service, the PlayStation UK blog has a few more sampler comics to decide whether the feature piques your interest. Available for lucky users in the UK, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa are two sampler comics, featuring the service’s highly touted Autoflow feature — which mimics the way your eyes read a page. Following the release of the PSP’s 6.20 firmware, PlayStation released comic samples of Transformers: All Hail Megatron and Aleister Arcane.
Free sample first-issues of Star Trek: Enterprise Experiment and Astro Boy: The Movie Adaptation are available until December 16. In order to grab your sample, make sure to first download the Comic App via the “Extras” section of the XMB (or through this link) for your PSP and use the redemption codes available on PlayStation’s UK blog. While some may question the validity of a Wii Fit “workout,” premium water company Hint is trying to capitalize on the craze by offering all purchasers of Nintendo’s latest fitness title a free case of water. A standalone copy of Wii Fit Plus costs $20, while a 12-pack of Hint water costs $22, making this quite the “deal.”
According to its official website, “Hint is a pure healthy water lightly infused with natural flavors. Unsweetened. Lightly flavored. No calories.” If you’re into that sort of thing, you can send in a digital scan of your Wii Fit Plus receipt to hintwater@5wpr.com. You’ll be able to choose from one of the following flavors: Blackberry, Watermelon, Pomegranate Tangerine, Mango Grapefruit or Raspberry Lime.

In one of those “We feel sort of gross about this, but it’s okay ’cause we get something cool for free” kinda ways, Microsoft today announced a partnership with Hyundai to bring the Genesis Coupe to Forza 3 as DLC on November 17. And not just one measly version, but three: a Rhys Millen Racing Red Bull Hundai Genesis Coupe, an HKS Genesis Coupe, and a “one of a kind” Genesis Coupe will arrive as a pack – free of charge! And though the name Hyundai may not exactly be synonymous with high speed racing, we’re assured their modded counterparts will help to clear any misconceptions.

You can get the first episode of the second season of Gunslinger Girl — presumably about a girl that slings guns (that’s totally a lie) — absolutely free from the PlayStation Video Store. Browse the “Anime” section of the Store, and look for the episode entitled “Distance Between Two: Brother and Sister.” The offer is available on both PSP and PS3 until September 17.

If you’re in attendance at PAX 2009, make sure to head over to Microsoft’s special Xbox table on the 4th floor of the North lobby and grab a redemption code for a free Xbox Avatar PAX shirt. Supplies are limited, but Microsoft will be handing out codes from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. (Pacific) on Saturday, in case you missed today’s giveaway rounds. Sure, it isn’t as awesome as proclaiming your D&D skills … but it’s a great way to make your online friends jealous that you made it to the sold-out Seattle event.

Capcom is issuing a call to all PSP-owning monster hunters, revealing that, if they bring their system and copy of Monster Hunter Freedom Unite to next week’s San Diego Comic-Con, they’ll be able to download eight free quests for the game. The company cautions those planning to do so that only six quests will fit on a memory stick (no file sizes are given), so you’d best bring a second MS Duo along just to be safe.
Four of the eight quests are said to be geared toward beginner-level players; the other eight are intended for Monster Hunter vets. Capcom has remarked that these freebies will serve as a taste of what’s to come from the game’s upcoming DLC, which will hit the PS Store every Friday through the end of 2009. (DLC quests for the game first became available earlier this month.)

Critics have been saying some good things about Syfy’s latest show, Warehouse 13. If you missed the series premiere, you’ll be able to catch up by downloading a free episode in SD or HD from the PlayStation Store. (Note: HD episodes only work on the PS3; SD episodes work on both the PS3 and PSP.)
For those unfamiliar with the show, here’s a synopsis from Wikipedia:
After saving the President’s life, Secret Service agents Myka Bering and Peter Lattimer are assigned to the government’s Warehouse 13, which houses supernatural objects. They are tasked to retrieve missing objects and investigate reports of new ones. The dramatic comedy, from Universal Media Studios, is described as part The X-Files, part Raiders of the Lost Ark, and part Moonlighting.
