European Nintendo downloads: Alex Kidd in Shinobi World, Monkey Island

The sole Virtual Console release this week is a reminder of a very odd time: when Sega thought Alex Kidd was a viable character. The company took an in-progress Shinobi parody game called Shinobi Kid, and then added the Alex Kidd character. Someone at Sega was under the impression that a game would sell better with Alex Kidd in it.

Also available: more Monkey Island, an expansion of one of Rubik’s World’s games, and Pallurikio, a cute platformer with a slingshot mechanic. And on DSiWare, it’s … a stripped-down version of Hell’s Kitchen!

European Nintendo downloads: Earthworm Jim 2, holiday games

This week, the European Wii and DS Shops’ halls are decked, with one festive, holiday-themed game each! Happy Holidays: Christmas on WiiWare is, like the Halloween WiiWare release, a program that lets you put together and send e-cards. Yep.

Just Sing! Christmas Songs on DSiWare is pretty much what it sounds like: a karaoke game in which you just sing Christmas songs. Two of them. Just watch the trailer (via GoNintendo) after the break.

Oh, also, Earthworm Jim 2 on Virtual Console. Neat!

European Nintendo downloads: Pokemon Rumble, Shootanto, demos

The WiiWare demo service arrives in Europe today, though a bit light on content compared to other regions. On the upside, both of the demos offered are for games that cost 1,500 Wii Points, which means you could save a pretty large chunk of change if you discover (somehow) that you don’t like World of Goo.

In terms of stuff you pay for, Shootanto is going to be totally overshadowed by Pokemon Rumble. DSiWare has a decent selection of games, including something that looks kind of like Defend Your Castle, a few card games, and myNotebook.

European Nintendo downloads: My Zoo, Ninja Gaiden, Rock N’ Roll Climber

Today, on the European Wii Shop, Hudson follows up its surprisingly successful My Aquarium with more animals to take care of. Also on WiiWare, Nintendo’s still-weird Balance Board-equipped Rock N’ Roll Climber, whose rock-climbing/air-guitar concept, and whose non-standard apostrophe use we’ll never get used to.

The big draw for us is the arcade brawler version of Ninja Gaiden, which seems fresh to us after 20 years of dodging eagles in the NES game.

European Nintendo downloads: Banana fighting street

Finally, the wait for Fighting Street is over for Europe! We suppose it’s timely, given that a new Street Fighter game is in the news now, but … it’s still Fighting Street. The continuation of Tales of Monkey Island should be a bit more welcome, as should the DSiWare Bomberman Blitz.

Manic Monkey Mayhem on WiiWare sounds like it could be great (monkeys throw bananas to knock each other off of platforms), with online play — but, of course, we always feel guarded about unknown WiiWare games. But monkeys! We look forward to hearing impressions.

As for the rest, Uno sounds like Uno and SUDOKU sounds like sudoku, but louder.

European Nintendo downloads: Zombies Lit, BBQed My Ghost Mansion

Nintendo of Europe apparently believes Halloween is serious business and worth celebrating. Four of the five new downloadable games this week are in some way horror-themed! Zombies Ate My Neighbors arrives on Virtual Console in the same week as its North American release (under the European title Zombies), as does (unfortunately) Ghost Mansion Party. WayForward’s LIT proves a more appropriate Halloween release than its Valentine’s Day-adjacent release in the US would suggest.

Perhaps the biggest, scariest surprise of all: Little Red Riding Hood’s Zombie BBQ is out in Europe, finally! And, while it was released on a cartridge here, it’s an 800-point DSiWare download in Europe! No excising of zombie food talk for this one.

European Nintendo downloads: Happy Hallowinter

We knew about this week’s marquee European WiiWare release yesterday, and, happily, LostWinds: Winter of the Melodias has actually arrived on the Wii Shop. For just 1,000 Wii Points, you can begin causing irrevocable damage to the ecosystem of another landscape by haphazardly altering the weather. Fun! For season-themed entertainment, we’ll definitely take that over Happy Holidays: Halloween, an app that lets you make Halloween e-cards and send them to your friends’ Wiis. We’re not going to think too much about that one, much like publisher 505 Games.

The Virtual Console has an inferior, but more Haggar-centric, Final Fight sequel, along with Wonder Boy III, which is good but not as good as the other version of the same game already there (Dragon’s Curse). And on DSiWare, Photo Clock and … oh, hey, Dragon Quest Wars!

European Nintendo downloads: Consider yourself a hero

This week’s new PAL Wii Shop update is short on selection, offering only one new game for Wii and one new app for DSi, but both are intriguing. Konami’s Contra ReBirth arrives in the West for the first time, offering the first original Contra gameplay since 2007’s brilliant Contra 4 — though don’t expect anything that revelatory.

DSiWare now features an app we’ve been curious about since its non-unveiling at E3: 6 in 1 Dictionary with Camera Function; an app that is designed to translate between six different languages, even with words photographed by the DSi camera.

European Nintendo downloads: Oscar in Troll-land

This week’s European Wii/DSi Shop update includes no Virtual Console game, but it does almost include Trolls! That’s right, Oscar in Toyland is a DSiWare remake of an Amiga game called Trolls! Thankfully for people who value sleeping at night without those faces burned into their minds, the Trolls license has been removed. Even if it’s a Trolls game, a near-direct port of an old game on DSiWare is pretty cool.

On WiiWare, Gameloft offers a Texas Hold’em Poker that isn’t the same game as the Texas Hold’em Tournament that’s been available since March. Want Texas Hold’em without the pressure of the tournament setting, or something? Well, there you go. In addition, this week’s WiiWare Mr. Driller game is now available. There’s also new DLC for My Life as a Darklord.

European Nintendo downloads: Pilotwings (finally)

Without a doubt, the highlight of this week’s WiiWare, Virtual Console, and DSiWare offerings in Europe is Pilotwings, the SNES launch title that should have been on the Virtual Console in 2006. It has finally arrived in PAL territories, and we have high hopes for a North American release soon. (Which we really shouldn’t.)

The other new additions are actually pretty great as well: Mario vs. Donkey Kong and Pop! Plus Solo are now up on DSiWare, and two distinctly different paddle games, Bit.Trip: Core and Arkanoid Plus, are on WiiWare:
