Retailers pleased with PSP Go … because it helps sell the PSP-3000

September 30th, 2009 at 01:53pm Under PSP

Despite word from a few European retailers that Sony’s download-only handheld, the PSP Go, won’t be sold in their stores, the company’s UK product manager isn’t afraid of poor sales. Even with no ability to read physical media (read as: nothing for retail to sell other than the console), and a £224.99 price point ($362.07 — seriously), Sony’s Claire Blackhouse says retailers are happy to have the new console in their stores. “We were very aware of concerns when we went into it and I actually expected a lot more negative responses than we actually got,” Blackhouse told GamesIndustry.biz. “[The retailers] were really quite fine with it.”

Furthermore, she says that retailers see the console launch this week as a “way of getting people into the store,” that those not able to afford the new hardware will “aspire to it” and “might buy the PSP 3000 instead.” She even riffs on a PSP-ified family, where “dad might buy the PSP Go but the kids might get PSP 3000s.” Sony’s 180° marketing shift we’ve seen recently for the PSP 3000 certainly helps to serve as proof of the company’s belief in this strategy. Only time will tell if it’ll work.

Wii price cut in Europe excludes UK [update]

September 25th, 2009 at 12:57pm Under Wii / Nintendo

Update: Nintendo has told us that the price in Canada has dropped accordingly to $219.95 and will go into effect the same day as the US. The representative also said more details on the European price drop will arrive next Monday.

Though online portals to major European retailers have yet to reflect the claim, the price for a Wii is reported to drop by €50 across Europe, bringing the total cost to €199, according to GamesIndustry.biz. Unfortunately, it appears that the price cut won’t bridge the gap of the English Channel, as the discount is reportedly confirmed for all of Europe except for the UK.

Nintendo officially dropped the price of its console in the US late Wednesday night (during Sony’s TGS press conference, those scoundrels!), leaving us wondering why Europe, a key market, was left out of the equation — until now. With no price cut yet announced for the UK though, that rumored bundle seems all the more likely.

Rumor: No Euro Wii price cut, new bundle to include both Wii Sports games, MotionPlus

September 23rd, 2009 at 05:27pm Under Wii / Nintendo

Just like we saw earlier this year with the PlayStation 3 Slim, the rumor mill is churning at breakneck pace — though this time around a possible Nintendo Wii price cut rather than a slimmer console. Aside from multiple retailer listings and today’s alleged internal Best Buy memo, MCV reports that a “retail source” told it the UK won’t be receiving the same price cut that North America and Japan are expected to receive. Instead, the current model will be given the bundle treatment.

GamesIndustry.biz spotted the new bundle on ShopTo.net — it has since been removed, though an image and a shell of the page still exist — which includes both Wii Sports and Wii Sports Resort as well as a MotionPlus attachment, for the same £199.99 ($326.76) the system is priced at now. If it is true, at least UK Wii buyers will be getting a bit more for their pounds. It’s not quite the Duck Hunt/Super Mario Bros. with a Zapper combo of yore, but it’ll have to do.

Fable 3 will question the foundations on which Fable is built, says Molyneux

August 19th, 2009 at 04:57pm Under Xbox 360

Hot off the announcement this morning of Fable 3 coming to Xbox 360 in 2010, Microsoft Game Studios of Europe head Peter Molyneux sat down to discuss the franchise a bit with GamesIndustry.biz. Though the acutely over-promising developer kept tight-lipped about details on the upcoming sequel, he did let slip that Fable 3 will question “some of the foundations that Fable [the franchise] is built on.”

We’re not sure exactly what that means, but we already know that the gesture system has been given a major facelift. The moral choice aims to be a lot deeper than in Fable 2 as well, with Molyneux saying promises you make in your rise to power will affect your position as the people’s ruler. We’ll be sure to remember these promises when the game releases next year (that’s three promises so far, Molyneux!).

Valve: Steam sales even boost retail games

July 3rd, 2009 at 07:00pm Under PC+ Xbox 360

Worried that those pesky digital shelves are going to put your local brick-and-mortar out of business in the next few weeks? Worry not, friends, as Valve’s Doug Lombardi is here to put all your worries to bed. Talking to GamesIndustry.biz, Lombardi claimed that “free weekend” sales on Steam (among others) actually help to bolster sales at physical retail locations as well as online.

“Recently we’ve seen data that shows Left 4 Dead free weekends increase the sales of Left 4 Dead on Steam, at retail and on the Xbox 360, which we would never have guessed could have happened, but it’s just that word of mouth,” says Lombardi. Furthermore, he waves off talk of bad blood between Valve and GameStop over the developer’s Steam service, saying, “We spent more money at GameStop in the US promoting Left 4 Dead than we did at any other chain … we sold more copies of Left 4 Dead at Gamestop than we did at any other chain … for us, whichever cash register you want to pay at, that’s fine.” Not that it matters to GameStop anyway, given the lack of a threat posed for at least another five years, right?
