Games on Demand heading to Games for Windows LIVE

December 4th, 2009 at 02:21am Under PC

Games For Windows LIVE Logo

Currently on Xbox LIVE through Microsoft’s Games on Demand service, users are able to buy full, current generation games as a digital download, providing a more convenient, online method of purchasing games as opposed to actually using some muscles and going down to the local retailer.

So far this service has amassed quite a collection, with games such as Dead Space, Crackdown, Saints Row 2, Bioshock, and many more available to download.

Microsoft announced late yesterday that a similar service will soon become available for the company’s online solution for the PC, Games for Window LIVE, allowing users to download PC titles in the same vein as Steam, Impulse and Direct2Drive, as well as Blizzard and EA’s online distribution solutions.

Games On Demand Logo

This new PC-centric Games on Demand service will launch on December 15th, and come prepped with games such as Resident Evil 5, Red Faction: Guerrilla and Battlestations: Pacific, as well as indie games such as World of Goo and Osmos, while a formerly Windows Vista-exclusive game, Tinker, will be available for free.

This new Games on Demand service will be in addition to Games for Windows LIVE’s current infrastructure, which tracks your Achievements for Games for Windows LIVE branded games, links your Gamertag and friends list to your Xbox LIVE profile, and acts as a storefront for additional add-on content.

You can go have a look at GamesForWindows.com to get yourself set up with the service, should you choose to do so.

Xbox LIVE Games on Demand: Saints Row 2, LEGO Indiana Jones

November 25th, 2009 at 03:43am Under Uncategorized

Saints Row 2 and LEGO Indiana Jones are this week’s additions to Xbox LIVE’s Games on Demand service, allowing Xbox 360 owners to buy and download these fine titles from the comfort of your living room.

Xbox LIVE Logo Smaller

Saints Row 2 is the continuation of the series of over-the-top open-world games that, while comparable to a game such as Grand Theft Auto, takes doesn’t take itself too seriously.

We really enjoyed Saints Row 2 when it was originally released, with its combination of a humorous, explosive singleplayer campaign with the addition of co-op to take on the missions with a friend.

Check your region’s pricing for Saints Row 2 on Games on Demand over here, and watch the original launch trailer below:

LEGO Indiana Jones: The Original Adventures, on the other hand, is a great family-oriented action game that features adventures from three of the Indiana Jones movies (Raiders of the Lost Ark, Temple of Doom and The Last Crusade) and takes full advantage of the LEGO license.

Xbox LIVE Games on Demand: Race Driver: GRID

November 18th, 2009 at 03:39am Under Uncategorized

Race Driver: GRID XBLA Box Art

If you somehow managed to miss out on Codemaster’s excellent Race Driver: GRID, then you sure did miss out, because it’s awesome (El33tonline was extremely impressed when it released last year).

If you do fall into that bracket, then no fear: Xbox 360 owners are now able to buy and download the racer via Xbox LIVE’s Games on Demand service.

In order to best describe GRID, let’s turn to a snippet from our review:

“Race Driver: GRID is the most action-packed, grittiest, smokiest, varied and entertaining game that I have played this year.

“Anyone who says damage does not add anything to a driving game is a liar and anyone who doesn’t think this sets a new standard for the genre is a pedestrian in every possible sense too.”

Sounds pretty darn convincing to me!

Check your region’s pricing for Race Driver: GRID over here and watch a few trailers for the game below in order to best get a sense of what you can expect:

Xbox LIVE Games on Demand: Monopoly

November 11th, 2009 at 08:47am Under Uncategorized

This week’s Xbox LIVE Games on Demand update sees the addition of Monopoly to the service. From the blurb:

Monopoly XBLA Box Art

“From EA Casual Entertainment, MONOPOLY is reinvented with a party twist! With a host of current-day cities and landmarks from all over the world, this new version lets you wheel and deal and compete to own some of the most recognized locations on Earth.

November 4th, 2009 at 02:13am Under Uncategorized

Xbox Live Logo

The great lineup of recent, current generation games available on Xbox LIVE’s Games on Demand service is growing rapidly, and has been strengthened further by the release of Far Cry 2 and Battlefield 2: Modern Combat onto the network.

Far Cry 2 is an excellent, open-world first-person shooter most unlike any released before, taking you to the wonderfully varied environments of Africa on a mission to stop a dangerous arms dealer, and return the war-torn region to an era of peace, as you “run, swim, drive, fly, shoot, fight and smash your way through over 50km² of open world. Beware though, sometimes the hunter can become the hunted.”

And how!

Check for your region’s pricing for Far Cry 2 over here, read El33tonline’s review of the game, and watch a couple trailers to get you in the mood below:

Battlefield 2: Modern Combat, on the other hand, brings “the field of battle to life like never before. Bullets whiz by and score the environments around you, spent minigun shells rain down from hovering helicopters, and explosions shatter your field of vision.

“Delivering the over-the-top action of the award-winning Battlefield franchise, Battlefield 2: Modern Combat lets you wage modern war your way. Battlefield 2: Modern Combat delivers the Battlefield franchise’s trademark multiplayer action on Xbox Live, delivering ferocious 24 player online battles.

“Fighting for one of 4 sides – the US, the European Union, the Chinese, or the newly formed Middle East Coalition – and armed with the latest modern weaponry, you are given full control over the 30+ vehicles in the game.”

Wow! Check for your region’s pricing for Battlefield 2: Modern Combat over here, and watch a couple launch trailers for the game below:

Xbox LIVE Games on Demand: Dead Space, DiRT

October 27th, 2009 at 10:09am Under Uncategorized

Two new full, current generation games have just been added to Xbox LIVE’s Games on Demand service today, namely the excellently moody third-person action adventure game, Dead Space, as well as the original (also excellent) off-road rally racer, Colin McRae: DiRT.

Dead Space XBLA Box Art

If you’re not familiar with Dead Space, the setup is summed up nicely, thus:

“When an immense mining ship, the USG Ishimura, comes into contact with a mysterious alien artifact in a remote star system, its communications with Earth are mysteriously cut off.

“Engineer Isaac Clarke is sent to repair the Ishimura’s communications array, but he arrives to find a living nightmare-the ship is a floating bloodbath, the crew unspeakably mutilated and infected by an ancient alien scourge. Clarke’s repair mission becomes one of survival as he fights not just to save himself, but to return the artifact to the planet … at any cost.”

Check your region’s pricing for Dead Space over here, and watch the original launch trailer a little further below.

What about DiRT, though?

Colin McRae: DiRT XBLA Box Art

“DiRT is an off-road racing game.” OK, what else? “The player’s role is to race their way through the world of off-road motor sport, increasing their fame and prestige on their way to becoming the ultimate Off-Road Champion of Champions.”

That doesn’t really sum up the thrill and excitement of throwing your car around off-road tracks against a variety of competitors, but good enough. Check your region’s pricing for Colin McRae: DiRT over here, and watch a bunch of trailers for the game below:
