According to a trademark filed on October 30th by one Activision Publishing Inc., we may or may not be seeing a new ‘Hero’ game dealing solely with the art of drumming in the near future.
Yep, Activision has filed a trademark for the name ‘Drum Hero,’ which covers all of the necessary bases in order to protect the company’s use of the name in association with products such as:
“Toys, hand-held games with liquid crystal displays, musical toys; action figures and accessories therefor; arcade games; coin-operated video games; electric action toys; handheld unit for playing electronic video games;” as well as “electronic toy drums.”
While ownership of a trademark doesn’t necessarily mean any products will emerge with the brand emblazoned thereupon, it definitely points towards Activision’s future plans for the Guitar Hero and ‘Hero’ franchise.

Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick recently gave an indication of where the future of the company’s Guitar Hero franchise may lie, and it doesn’t look as though traditional home consoles factor into this outlook.

Speaking at the Deutsche Bank Securities Technology Conference yesterday afternoon, Kotick gave a presentation regarding the future of the games industry and potential growth in the market.
During the question and answer session, an audience member asked Kotick about the possibility of Activision Blizzard’s titles, and other company’s games, foregoing the need to use a physical, traditional console to play them, most probably referencing cloud computing-type streaming initiatives such as Gaikai and OnLive.
It was confirmed that Activision Blizzard is indeed considering such alternatives to game distribution and delivery, as Kotick made it clear that such a future would present new business opportunities and greater freedom for third-party developers:
“I think what the untethered Guitar Hero does,” explained Kotick, “is it maybe equals the playing field a little bit more and gives you leverage with first parties on downloadable content and the business model.
“…you should expect to see many of our products to be playable on the television independent of a console,” continued Kotick.
Kotick did, however, backtrack a little bit and, regarding the current consoles, stated how he thinks that “there’s a lot more life left in the ones we have.”

An announcement trailer has been released for the next themed Guitar Hero game, Guitar Hero: Van Halen, featuring in-game footage of the virtual Van Halen band onstage ‘doing their thing,’ confirming the news that the game even exists.
Along with the full track list, it was revealed yesterday that the game would be hitting the US on December 22nd, leaving it to the very last second for Christmas shopping, but a European release date is currently only set at ‘To be decided 2010.’ Pity.
Watch the announcement trailer for Guitar Hero: Van Halen below to see how faithfully the band (and their actions) have been recreated for the game:
