The disc drive out back may be a bit precariously placed, but ‘Hailrazer”’s portable “NCube” reeks of everything we’d want in a handheld version of the last-gen Nintendo console (except for wireless multiplayer, of course). Engadget spotted the 90-hour-in-the-making portable GameCube over on – surprise, surprise! – the Ben Heck forums. A breakdown of the construction process can be found just after the break in video form, though you may want to set up the drool tray now before proceeding.
All set? Alright, now go ahead.

When questioned about the possibility of a dedicated gaming handheld vs a phone with multimedia functionality, Microsoft’s Robbie Bach expressed his hesitation to enter either market to attendees of yesterday’s.First Annual Microsoft Open House. The Entertainment and Devices division prez said, “The portable market’s an interesting market … you have to decide which direction the market is going.” Rather than pursue the phone with gaming/media functionality route that Apple has taken, Bach thinks current technology simply isn’t good enough yet.
“You have to decide if the dedicated devices in the portable market are going to continue to grow, or whether the phone that you get is going to get powerful enough and battery power management is going to get good enough that people are going to look at it and say ‘No, I just want one device that’s going to have some games on it, some music on it, some video on it.’ I’m probably more biased to think that’s the direction where the market is going.”
Though he didn’t mention an iPhone competitor or a dedicated gaming device, Bach hinted at the possibility, saying the Xbox and Zune are integrating at “a steady drumbeat.” That steady drumbeat likely won’t lead to much in the coming months though, as he noted, “There is a CES two years from now where people will look back and say ‘Wow! Look at everything they did.’” At that point we’ll only be four years from flying cars and hoverboards, so let’s hope that Microsoft has some serious future stuff up its sleeves.

Sony director of hardware marketing John Koller mentioned shortly after the E3 “reveal” of the PSP Go that the company was considering a “good will program,” which would allow UMD owners to trade in their physical games for digital versions. However, yesterday at the Tokyo Game Show, an SCEA spokesperson told Kotaku, “We were evaluating a UMD conversion program, but due to legal and technical reasons we will not be offering the program at this time.”
That’s quite a blow to the base of American PSP owners with large libraries of UMD titles looking to upgrade to a PSP Go — a blow significantly worsened by the European “PSP Go Rewards” initiative, which grants three free games to PSP Go purchasers who register for the promotion using an older PSP model. This same promotion will not be coming to the US. “SCEA region will not offer a UMD rewards program at this time,” due to the fact that the company has a “dual-platform strategy,” an SCEA spokesperson has explained to IndustryGamers.
Ironically enough, we have a “we’d rather not purchase our PSP games again to play them on a new version of your handheld” strategy going for us. It’s working out pretty well so far.

If you’re a busy body with an infinitesimal attention span, Sony’s added a feature to the PSP Go that should land squarely in your wheelhouse. First unveiled during a Gamespot UK unboxing of the new handheld (around the 10:00 mark), the Go allows players of any game to save their progress and perform other functions on the device. Upon returning to the game, you can instantly hop right back into whatever it was you were doing at the time of your save.
In the aforementioned unboxing video, Gamespot UK’s Guy Cocker saves his progress during a Motorstorm: Arctic Edge race in order to watch a trailer for Motorstorm: Arctic Edge. Rarely do we get urges to watch trailers for games we’re currently playing — but we suppose we’ve succumbed to stranger impulses before.

Nintendo’s DSiWare platform is set to become a bit more combustible later this fall — according to AndriaSang, the Japanese release list in the latest edition of Famitsu reveals an October launch for Itsudemo Bomberman (which translates to Bomberman Anytime) on the handheld’s download service. The magazine also lists a price of 500 DSi Points ($5) for the portable title.
Hudson hasn’t taken the trouble of actually announcing Itsudemo Bomberman yet — regardless, we’ve contacted them to see what, if any, details we can surmise about the game.
[Thanks, Fernando.]

It seems that reports from way back in January of this year on the Zune HD were true — the upcoming handheld from Microsoft will in fact feature some form of handheld gaming when it releases on September 15. At least that’s what we can glean from a recent advertisement for the OLED-laden iPod Touch competitor, hinting at a gaming feature (and showing a tiny snippet of a racing game).
We’ve embedded the video after the break, originally found by Zunited, but will presumably have to wait until at least Monday to hear more about the Zune HD’s gaming features (though we’ve asked Microsoft for comment either way). Considering the fact that the Zune Marketplace is coming to Xbox 360, we’ll be holding fast hope for a Microsoft version of PSP’s Minis at some point in the near future.

… we imagine it would look a little something like this. Behold the Xbox 1080, created by one Carl Archambeault. First of all, let’s stress that this product is not real. It’s a conceptual mock-up, designed to “combine the gaming power of the Xbox 360 and the music and video power of the Microsoft Zune.” It doesn’t actually work though — close inspection of the photos will reveal the handmade nature of the device.
As much as we like the idea of having a portable Xbox 360 — and we’re not the only ones — the design leaves something to be desired. It’s a bit largish, for one, and the bubbly aesthetics don’t really match the svelte concavity of the Xbox 360. Also, we’re not too sure about that toaster pop-up screen either. Still, it’s a nice start and, heck, if you could play Halo on it, who cares what it looks like?

Though it’s been quite some time since we last heard anything about a portable gaming device from Microsoft, corporate VP Shane Kim recently reconfirmed to Kikizo that the company is still very interested in the idea. “We’re building a service in Live that will… will extend to other platforms … no question about it,” Kim told them in an interview earlier this week.
He stresses that, with development for Project Natal underway, Microsoft isn’t exactly ponying up for extra resources to make portable Xbox gaming a reality. “If we chased after a mobile or handheld opportunity, we would not have the resources and ability to do things like … Project Natal.” Surprisingly, Kim even touches on the always touchy (and often not even mentioned) Live Anywhere initiative, saying, “We talked about Live Anywhere a few years ago … Live is the connective tissue.” From the sounds of things, though Microsoft may very well be thinking about the idea of a gaming handheld in the future, it’s not exactly right around the corner.

Nintendo president Satoru Iwata mentioned in a recent interview that the company had a new handheld all set to go in the last three years, but ultimately decided to scrap the plan. Speaking with CNBC, Iwata declined to give any further details about the product, but did say that the most important thing for Nintendo when releasing new hardware is to maintain “momentum.” Iwata implies that the new handheld would not have accomplished that goal.
History lesson time: Many moons ago Nintendo discussed the “three pillar strategy” for its hardware. It was to be the console (Gamecube, then Wii) and the two handhelds (Game Boy and DS). With the runaway success of the DS, and now the DSi, it seems the third pillar became vestigial. Perhaps one day we’ll see what this mysteriously scuttled handheld was meant to be.
