Green Day: Rock Band unveiled, plus rocking debut trailer

December 14th, 2009 at 07:15am Under PS3+ Wii / Nintendo

Green Day

The Spike TV Video Game Awards was the place to be this past weekend. In addition to a number of world premiere debut trailers being showcased, a new standalone Rock Band title was also unveiled at the event.

Harmonix, MTV Games and Warner Bros. have teamed up with Green Day to bring Green Day: Rock Band to music gamers. The game is described as an “extension and expression of Green Day’s most-defining albums and key moments throughout their career to date.”

“We’ve worked with the Rock Band team in the past year to enable our fans to play tracks from 21st Century Breakdown, and we’re excited to now be working on a game, spanning our entire career,” said Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong. “We want people to fire this up, choose their favorite Green Day tracks, and play along with us as Rock Band avatars so they can feel what it’s like to perform on stage as Green Day.”

Green Day: Rock Band will feature the likenesses of Green Day band members, Billie Joe Armstrong, Mike Dirnt, and Tré Cool as well as select venues and art specific to the band’s history. The game will be available for the Xbox 360, PS3 and Wii worldwide in 2010.The track list will be fully exportable, so gamers can play the songs in Rock Band and Rock Band 2 on the Xbox 360 and PS3.

Green Day fans can also look forward to three more tracks from 21st Century Breakdown arriving in the Rock Band Music Store tomorrow. The three pack of songs will include “Christian’s Inferno,” “Last of the American Girls,” and “¡Viva La Gloria!” These latest DLC songs as well as other Green Day tracks previously released on the Rock Band platform will be supported in Green Day: Rock Band.

MTV Games: ‘No future projects were affected’ by Harmonix restructuring

December 10th, 2009 at 04:30pm Under PSP

http://www.joystiq.com/media/2009/12/harmonixlogo_121009.jpg

Today’s 39 layoffs at Rock Band-developer Harmonix represented 13 percent of its staff, Joystiq has learned in a follow-up with MTV Games. The publisher expressed that Harmonix, its QA department and support positions were built to accommodate the 2009 worldwide release schedule. The developer will now shift to a “combination of temporary/part time help, outsourcing and support from external partners — which is in line with how other game developers manage their QA departments.”

When asked if this restructuring was precipitated by sales of The Beatles: Rock Band, a Harmonix/MTV Games spokesperson told Joystiq, “No. This was a process and business decision unrelated to the performance of any MTV Games / Harmonix product. MTV Games and Harmonix are very pleased with the sales of our Rock Band titles and we expect to continue to see strong sales throughout the holidays across all of our titles. The Beatles: Rock Band has sold over 1 million units worldwide to date. Again, the reason for the restructuring is due to better aligning our staffing to best suit our product development plans and schedules moving forward.”

MTV Games also wanted to make sure that it was clear that “no future projects were affected by the restructuring.”

Rock Band Network to launch next year, open beta still planned for this year

November 26th, 2009 at 06:58am Under PS3

Rock Band Network Header

Rock Band Network, the MTV Games/Harmonix service that allows and enables musicians and fans of music (with rights to a song) to turn a song into a playable Rock Band track (and earn some money as a result) was scheduled to exit its current closed beta and launch this month, which, as yet, hasn’t happened.

Speaking to Kotaku, however, an MTV Games spokesperson has revealed what the company’s future plans for the service are:

“We’re working hard to get the Rock Band Network open public beta release of tools up before the end of the year, with our RBN storefront launching in early 2010,” said the spokesperson. “Exact dates still TBD. The tools necessary for bands to start authoring and prepare their content for review are already live on Creators.rockband.com/tools/download.

“The open beta launch will add access to the currently private website where all of the RBN community activity and peer reviewing of tracks will take place,” the MTV Games spokesperson continued. “People who join the Rock Band Network (bands, fans or otherwise) will be able to play and preview any song before it hits the store, so they should stay tuned for the official launch.”

Sounds like a plan!

Rock Band Weekly: Tom Petty, Go-Go’s, Kelly Clarkson, Pink

November 20th, 2009 at 12:30pm Under Xbox 360

A live version of Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers’ “Mary Jane’s Last Dance” is available next week within the band’s Rock Band DLC six-pack. The song may not be everyone’s cup of formaldehyde, but it’s certainly memorable for conjuring up one of the creepiest music videos of all time. We have no idea what the song is actually about, but it will always be the story of Tom Petty stealing Kim Basinger’s corpse from the morgue, dressing her up, and then at the end …. AHHhhHhHHHH!

Check out the full update after the break, no new Rock Band Unplugged DLC next week.

Update: PSN will updated on Tuesday.

Child’s Play & Harmonix rock San Fran for charity Dec. 9

November 20th, 2009 at 07:00am Under PSP

Harmonix and Child’s Play have announced that they’re banding together for a charity benefit Rock Band night at San Francisco’s DNA Lounge the night of December 9. “Ümloud!” is an all-ages event organized by GameLife’s Chris Kohler, Gamehelper’s Joe Markert and Telltale Games’ John “Seg” Seggerson, and staffed by a number of Bay Area games bloggers, including yours truly.

The party kicks off at 7PM PT and runs through 2AM PT on December 10, with a suggested $10 donation for admission. Everyone who attends will automagically be made eligible for a chance to win some of the many raffle prizes that’ll be awarded throughout the night, but those who wish to donate more can sign up for two different “band packages” — which include reserved songs and the chance to play on DNA’s main stage — at the Ümloud! site.

Proceeds from the event will go to provide toys and video games to children’s hospitals nationwide, including the local Oakland Children’s Hospital.

November 6th, 2009 at 12:20pm Under Wii / Nintendo+ Xbox 360

We’ve also added this little guy to Rock Band Weekly:
. He indicates tracks that are considered “family-friendly” enough for Lego Rock Band. Such marked songs will be available in LRB’s music store, as well as appearing in the regular Rock Band music store. [Thanks to our friend Dustin Burg for the Lego head!]
