New iPhone game ‘Flipt’ releases today to challenge your sense of direction

A new iPhone game called ‘Flipt’ arrives on the iTunes App Store today, and by the looks of the recently released trailer, it’ll definitely challenge your sense of direction, as well as your puzzle and platforming skills, to the max.

Developed by South African game developer Luma Arcade (Marble Blast Mobile) and published by InstantAction, on the surface Flipt appears to be a regular platformer, as you make your way through various urban-inspired levels and use moving platforms and power-ups to traverse the world, but the game has at least one neat trick up its sleeve.

By physically flipping your iPhone around while playing Flipt, you’ll effectively be helping your in-game persona navigate the levels by flipping the world around and allowing you to access new areas and progress further into the game, taking advantage of Luma Arcade’s proprietary accelerometer code to provide a silky smooth play experience.

Watch the slick trailer for Flipt below to see what I’m on about:

Flipt releases today on the iTunes App Store for iPhone and iPod Touch, with a 5 level ‘Lite’ version available for you to try.

El33tonline thanks Rachel Nordquist and Sam Williams from InstantAction, and Luke Lamothe from Luma Arcade, for telling us more about this great looking title – we’re told to “keep an eye out” for “more great stuff” to emerge from the partnership between Luma Arcade and InstantAction, which has already resulted in the creation of Marble Blast Mobile and Flipt.

Can’t wait!

iPhone App gives Xbox Live users complete control on the go

November 28th, 2009 at 01:15pm Under Xbox 360

A new iPhone application entering the crowded marketplace allows all Xbox Live addicts the ability to connect to their account and do pretty much everything you can think of. Bad news: it isn’t free. The $1.99 app, called 360 Live, lets you sign into your account, browse and respond to friend requests, check messages and even creep your friend’s Gamercard on the go.

But, before you slap your $2 on the table, we’d recommend you wait for Microsoft to respond to the app’s list price. In August 2008, Microsoft mandated that all Xbox Live-related applications be free. So, it may just be a matter of time before the 360 Live app drops to the easy-to-swallow price of free.

Pachter: Project Natal will cost $50, ‘Sphere’ no more than $100 [update]

October 16th, 2009 at 12:00am Under Xbox 360

Over at IndustryGamers, everyone’s favorite video game predicterer (we’re still working on that one) Michael Pachter has taken the reigns of the site and offers his own extensive diatribe on the future of Sony and Microsoft’s upcoming new tech: Project Natal and the PlayStation Motion Controller (rumored to be called Sphere). Pachter’s assertion is that price will be Natal’s biggest selling point and Microsoft will try to expand upon its market of established Xbox 360 owners by offering the device for $50. For Sony’s doodad, Pachter says the company is “trying to create an answer to the success of the Wii.”

Pachter even likens the future state of a Natal-enabled Xbox 360 to the current state of the iPhone — with features like Twitter, Netflix, Last.fm and Facebook inside Microsoft’s box and its intuitive interface, he says casual or non-playing members of Xbox 360 households will become interested. And then when it’s bundled with all new Xbox 360s, he says that’ll expand Microsoft’s reach even more.

For the motion-controlled competition, Pachter says he’d be surprised if Sony’s asking price was over $100, and stresses that both Microsoft and Sony need to keep “the consumer’s cost relatively low in order to achieve broad penetration.”

[Update: Corrected Pachter's belief that the motion controller would be no more than $100. We sincerely apologize for the misinterpretation and the consequent misinformation.]

SCEA: Developers responsible for keeping PSP minis prices competitive

October 7th, 2009 at 06:15pm Under PSP

PSP minis are supposed to introduce bite-sized iPhone-esque games to Sony’s handheld. While minis feature small file sizes and reduced functionality, they certainly don’t carry smaller price tags. The first batch of minis have all been priced between $4.99 and $9.99, making them no cheaper than the average PlayStation Network exclusive. Which sounds like the better deal for $9.99? Yet another version of Tetris … or the 3D online multiplayer shooter Syphon Filter: Combat Ops?

Even worse, many of these minis are priced higher than their iPhone counterparts. While Hero of Sparta costs $1.99 on iPhone, it costs $5.99 on PSP. Fieldrunners costs $2.99 on iPhone, but $6.99 on PSP. We chatted with SCEA’s Eric Lempel to talk about the lack of apparent value in the minis program. He explained that Sony has no hand in determining the prices of minis. “As far as pricing goes, the publisher of the title sets the pricing,” he explained. When quizzed if publishers were allowed to create a $1.99 game on PSP, he told us: “Yes, absolutely.”

Lempel agrees that publishers must seriously think about the kind of prices they’re setting on the Store, to ensure their content offers the same value as other PSP titles. “I think they have to carefully look at that, carefully price their content. Minis was intended to be something a little different and we wanted to see a lot of different types of content through minis. If it’s not priced correctly, consumers may be turned off at the proposition and say ‘I’d rather just go for this kind of stuff instead of minis.’”

Way of the Samurai 3 cuttin’ fools in NA this October

September 19th, 2009 at 09:30pm Under Xbox 360

The graphics may be a bit undercooked and the series’ last entry may have been released in the States over five years ago, but we certainly were happy to hear that Way of the Samurai 3 will be arriving on October 13th in the US. Agetec and UFO Interactive — in charge of publishing the PS3 and 360 iterations, respectively — officially announced the game’s impending October arrival yesterday, as well as news of an iPhone iteration of the game currently available for free.

Sure, the iPhone version of WotS3 isn’t much more than a side-scrolling brawler, but hey, it’s free! Hopefully that can sate your samurai murdering urges for another month.

RES4 now available on iPhone

Resident Evil 4 iPhone

Capcom has announced that Resident Evil 4 for iPhone is now live on the iPhone App Store. The iPhone version of the game will cost $7.99.

Promising to deliver the best 3D graphics to date on iPhone, the game features a new location based damage system so enemies will be blasted apart where you aim. Gamers will be able to get a panoramic view of the action thanks to the third person perspective camera, shaking the iPhone or iPod Touch to reload.

Context sensitive controls pop up when they are needed, allowing gamers to perform complex actions with just one button tap. Simply press an icon to climb ladders, equip binoculars and jump out of windows. The game also includes a separate mission mode called Mercenary Mode (unlocked once the game has been played through) with pre-set goals, weapons and conditions.

Check out our previous coverage for an excellent piece of in-game footage that a sly iPhone gamer managed to capture. Screenshots of the iPhone version of the game follow below.

We can’t stop buying this PS1 iPhone case

July 2nd, 2009 at 03:45pm Under PSP

Our problem isn’t that we’re waffling on whether or not to buy one of these gorgeous, felt, PlayStation One-shaped iPhone cases. Our problem is that we can’t stop buying them. Every time we confirm our order we think of yet another reason we need one. What if we lose the first one in a house fire? What if the second one goes through the wash? What if we want our iPhone to have a different yet identical outfit for every day of the week like Doug Funnie?

We hope you understand our predicament. We also hope you understand why they seem to be temporarily sold out.
