Aksys localizing Mimana Iyar Chronicles for UMD, PSN

October 23rd, 2009 at 05:00pm Under PSP

It’s a surprising that a game with the pedigree of the Lunar series hasn’t found its way stateside yet. Aksys is showing even more love for PlayStation fans by announcing plans to localize the JRPG for both a UMD and PSN release.

Mimana Iyar Chronicles is a traditional 2D JRPG from Kogado Studios and Premium Agency, featuring anime cutscenes and a real-time battle system. It’s currently scheduled for a Spring 2010 release, meaning we’re bound to find out more about the game closer to release.

TGS 2009: Resonance of Fate trailer, now with 100% fewer bullets

September 28th, 2009 at 04:00am Under Xbox 360

The first TGS trailer for Resonance of Fate (End of Eternity in Japan) had us very excited due to its unique John Woo-inspired bullet-riddled action. However, the second (and presumably last) trailer for the game from the game show goes back to traditional JRPG form by focusing exclusively on the game’s heavy-handed story.

While there’s chance for greatness in tri-Ace’s upcoming story, we can’t say that’s what’s keeping us interested in the game. For once, could it be that a JRPG is keeping our attention more for its gameplay than its pre-rendered cutscenes?

Valkyria Chronicles 2 gameplay footage looks as good as we want it to be

September 10th, 2009 at 11:15pm Under PSP

Don’t be a hater. Valkyria Chronicles 2 may not be on the PS3 (or 360) as many had wished, but it certainly looks fine as-is on the PSP. Sega has done a remarkable job of recreating the look and, more importantly, gameplay of the original game. Considering the limited power of the PSP, we’re positively surprised by the results.

With a brand new branching class system, and the promise of multiplayer, VC2 is shaping up to be the sequel we’ve all clamored for. Sure, it may not be in HD, but when was the last time you were able to play Valkyria Chronicles while on the toilet seat … of an airplane? Check out another clip after the break.

Phantasy Star Portable characters won’t transfer into PSP2

September 4th, 2009 at 08:00pm Under PSP

Sega’s upcoming Phantasy Star Portable 2 is one of the most exciting RPGs coming to PSP. Why? Infrastructure support! We’re really intrigued to finally have a real online RPG experience on a handheld. Unfortunately, those of you expecting to import your level 60 characters from the first PSP game will be out of luck: to keep things fair, PSP2 will have you creating your characters from scratch.

There are bonuses to be had for players of the original, though. While you won’t be able to export your XP or gear, you will gain access to an exclusive item: “exzam weapon,” according to Siliconera. Hopefully, news of this bonus will be enough to forgive us for screencapping this horrifying shot from a Japanese promo video for the game. What’s with that guy’s outfit?!

Impressions: Resonance of Fate

August 24th, 2009 at 07:00pm Under Xbox 360

You won’t see enormous breasts in this game, we were told by a Sega producer, as he started playing through an untranslated Resonance of Fate. While this is rarely used as a selling point (especially in games), he wanted to emphasize the gritty “realistic” look of tri-Ace’s upcoming RPG. Gone are the over-the-top wacky hairdos, cute talking mascots, giant swords and neon-colored hover-vehicles that seem to permeate nearly every Square Enix JRPG. Instead, this fantasy world is meant to resemble our own.

Granted, the people of Bazel, the fictional world in which Resonance of Fate takes place, still have perfect hair and outfits from the trendier shops of Shibuya. It may still not jive with the American sensibilities of “reality,” but it’s certainly a far cry from tri-Ace’s other current-gen efforts, Star Ocean and Infinite Undiscovery.

Resonance of Fate is being billed as a significant departure for tri-Ace. Its first non-Square Enix-published game comes with a brand new graphics engine, and a few new ideas to boot. The word “cliché” was uttered more than once during the presentation — to describe exactly what the team is trying to avoid. Considering the studio’s track record, we obviously had our doubts.

Final Fantasy XIII’s English voiceovers are complete

August 21st, 2009 at 12:28pm Under Xbox 360

Klee Kuo, one of Square Enix’s marketing Moogles, just dropped word that the English voice work for Final Fantasy XIII is complete. Kuo also made sure to say how impressed he was with the new Summons (marketing, ho!) and the fact that it’ll incorporate a “unique level up system in FFXIII like Sphere Grid in FFX and License Board in FFXII.”

So, Squenix, now that you have the voice work out of the way, can you get us that demo? Please?

2D PS3 RPG crosses over to Xbox 360

June 25th, 2009 at 03:30pm Under Xbox 360

If you’re a fan of dated, obscure 2D JRPGs, then you’ll be glad to know that the former PS3-exclusive Cross Edge is getting an Xbox 360 port. The original game featured a mish-mash of characters from Darkstalkers, Disgaea, Ar Tonelico and more. The novelty of seeing characters from a variety of series (all owned by different companies) couldn’t offset its PS1-quality production values and repetitive gameplay, though, with Cross Edge currently holding a Metacritic score of 47.

Regardless, developer Compile Heart is working on a version just for Xbox 360 called Cross Edge Dash. Just like the PS3 version of Tales of Vesperia, this late port will feature a number of enhancements, such as new events and a Colosseum mode. The game will be available in Japan this October, with a US release unannounced.

Persona to include two disc soundtrack with every copy

June 12th, 2009 at 11:00am Under PSP

Click to embiggen.

Atlus continues to package some of the coolest goodies with its games. The upcoming PSP version of Persona, Atlus’ flagship RPG series, will include a two-disc soundtrack set … with every copy of the game. No, this isn’t some elusive pre-order bonus that you can only get from Retailer X (which, by the way, would be an awesome store to go to).

In addition to the soundtrack CDs, the US release of Persona will be coming with a nifty extra that didn’t make the original Japanese cut. “We are able to confirm to series fans that in addition to the all-new localization, the ‘Snow Queen’ quest, game content never before available in North America, will be included in this new release,” an Atlus PR e-mail told us.

Expect Persona on September 22nd.
