These days it seems that no developer can release a sequel without some sort of outcry from the original’s fans. There is always a fine line between releasing a product that is too familiar to the old one, or too different to be called a sequel. Overstep this line either way and the fans will have online petitions and rage infested forum posts up in no time. Just look at Modern Warfare 2 and the PC community.

Left 4 Dead 2 (L4D2) was no exception. The fans of the first game felt cheated since the day the sequel was announced. They feared it would kill the original community and the developer would abandon any promised add-on packs. They even had dignitaries visit Valve to check up on progress and then declared that their concerns have been put to rest. This caused other members of the community to shout foul play and bribery. Let me state for the record that Left 4 Dead 2 is a worthy sequel, with enough brilliant new content to warrant a full release, and it is totally awesome! And that all boycotters are crybabies.

It’s just been announced that Left 4 Dead 2, Valve’s follow-up cooperative zombie shooter, has reached over two million units sold in the two weeks it’s been available at retail.
According to Valve, the comparative sales performance of the game is more than double that of the original Left 4 Dead which released exactly one year before its sequel, benefiting from Thanksgiving ‘Black Friday’ sales promotions in North America.
VP of marketing at Valve Doug Lombardi beamed:
“Left 4 Dead 2 is off to a great start with strong support at retail and great reviews from the press. Meanwhile the title has already been played by over 1 million Xbox LIVE Gold account holders, and news regarding L4D2 DLC 1 is coming very soon.”

For the second week in a row, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 has taken perch atop Chart Track’s UK Software Sales Chart, fending off valiant advances from newcomers such as Left 4 Dead 2, Assassin’s Creed II and New Super Mario Bros. Wii in the process.
Sales of Modern Warfare 2 this past week dropped a massive 86% from its enormous launch week, which makes this chart topping feat all the more impressive.
Assassin’s Creed II (releasing on Xbox 360, PS3, DS and PSP) debuts at No. 2, outperforming the original entry to the series by 12% on launch week (although the original title notably shot straight to No. 1 in its first week of sales in 2007).
New Super Mario Bros. Wii also makes its first chart appearance, only below Assassin’s Creed II at No. 3, while two other Nintendo titles, Wii Sports Resort (sales down 10%) and Wii Fit Plus (sales up 10%) take positions 4 and 5 respectively (dropping from No. 2 and No. 4 respectively).
Fifa 10 (sales down 5%) drops from No. 3 to No. 6 this week, as Left 4 Dead 2, another debut title in the UK, charts at No. 7. Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games steps down to No. 8 this week from No. 6, Forza Motorsport 3 falls to No. 9 from No. 5 last week, and LEGO Batman: The Videogame appears at No. 10, moving down from No. 7 last week.
Other interesting movement on the UK Software Sales Chart this week includes the debut of Codemasters’ Formula One racing game, F1 2009 on Wii and PSP at No. 11, the debut of LEGO Indiana Jones 2: The Adventure Continues at No. 16, Dragon Age: Origins slipping down to No. 17 from No. 13 last week and GTA: Episodes From Liberty City falling to No. 21 from No. 10 last week.
Meanwhile, Football Manager 2010 fumbles its way to No. 23 from No. 12, Style Boutique shoots up the chart to No. 25 this week from No. 40, Uncharted 2 trips and falls to No. 29 from No. 18, Tekken 6 drops to No. 33 from No. 20 last week, DJ Hero continues its poor performance by slipping down further to No. 35 from No. 27, and LittleBigPlanet re-enters the chart at No. 38 thanks to the release of the PSP version.
The Top Ten All Format UK Software Sales Chart follows below:
- Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (Activision)
- Assassin’s Creed II (Ubisoft)
- New Super Mario Bros Wii. (Nintendo)
- Wii Sports Resort (Nintendo)
- Wii Fit Plus (Nintendo)
- FIFA 10 (EA)
- Left 4 Dead 2 (Valve)

Valve has now fully opened the floodgates, allowing gamers of all colours (Gold and Silver Xbox 360 members), creeds (Xbox 360 and PC) and lifestyle choices (whether you’ve pre-ordered the game or not) to sample the delights of Left 4 Dead 2 in demo form.
Additionally, a new update for the PC demo has been released to fix sound and microphone issues gamers were having (settings being reset) that affected those of you running the demo on Windows 7 and Windows Vista.
The full version of Left 4 Dead 2, Valve’s follow-up to their original zombie shooting cooperative shooter, releases over the week of November 17th worldwide.

Chet Faliszek, one of Valve’s writers and the Left 4 Dead 2 project lead, recently spoke to CVG about the fallout from the Left 4 Dead 2 boycott (which recently ended) and what affect it’s had on projected sales of the game, if any:
“As we get closer to launch we see the reaction to the demo,” said Faliszek, “pre-orders are four times what Left 4 Dead 1 was, people’s excitement, the boycott itself and how it’s changed… I think people are just excited now.”
Valve has learned through the boycott that it’s not possible to please everybody all the time, and it has changed the way the developer relays information about their games, as Faliszek tries to simplify the matter:
“Honestly I made the joke and it’s true,” Faliszek continued. “If you put $20 in a box and charge $10 for it someone would complain you didn’t put $50 in a box. Not to say some of the concerns raised aren’t valid, but you’re always going to have some kind of upset and that’s not how we work. We work at looking at the project and trying to get it out.”
Look out for Valve’s cooperative zombie shooter, Left 4 Dead 2, when it releases over the week of November 17th.

As promised, Valve unleashed the Left 4 Dead 2 demo yesterday on Xbox LIVE Marketplace, surely to the delight of all those Xbox 360 owners looking forward to get their bloody mitts on the full game on November 17th.
Also as promised, however, the demo is only available to those of you who’ve pre-ordered Left 4 Dead 2, as part of a tiered release schedule for the demo.
The next group of players who will gain access to the demo will be Xbox LIVE Gold members and PC gamers on November 3rd, while on November 10th, Xbox LIVE Silver members will be able to give it a go.
It’s not all doom and gloom though, because we’ve got a couple ‘survival guide’ trailers to watch, the first of which is a hilarious viral trailer performed by two British gentleman, and the other (which is admittedly a little old) is a CG action trailer featuring intense gore and excellent voice performances – always a good combination!
