Modern Warfare 2 hit shelves across the world yesterday, and not a moment too soon because it was one of the most anticipated games of this year.
Megarom held an official launch at The Woods Paintball Arena in Johannesburg yesterday to celebrate the release of the game in South Africa, and El33tonline was on hand to enjoy the festivities. The first Modern Warfare sold roughly 40 000 units across the country and, with first day sales expected to exceed this number, expectations were reaching fever pitch.

While you could be forgiven for believing this was an ordinary trip to the country at first (complete with a pond and ducks), the serenity of the scene was soon broken with the sounds of gunfire and shouts of ‘They’re flanking us!’ ringing out. A group of eager journalists and a few lucky gamers assembled to put their bodies on the line to experience the adrenaline rush of being a soldier in the Paintball arena. In between the Paintball matches you could also put Modern Warfare 2 through its paces thanks to the 8 player Xbox 360 lan set up.

After kitting up with a mask, gloves and uniform, each soldier was armed with a marker containing about 130 rounds of ammo and divided into one of two teams before heading out into the Paintball field. The first match was a strategic Team Deathmatch followed by a more intense Capture the Flag game and then two rounds of even more tactical gameplay. Despite a couple of bruises and scratches, it’s safe to say that everyone enjoyed their time spent in the trenches and left eagerly to dig in to the Modern Warfare 2 campaign.
Thanks to Megarom for an awesome day!

Megarom has intercepted an encoded message from behind enemy lines and is searching for someone capable of decoding it and converging on the enemy position.
Although Intel is scarce, we do know that Vladimir Makarov is recruiting five more mercenaries to join his cause and will be putting them through their paces on 11.10.09. It is therefore essential that these five soldiers be located in Johannesburg or be able to get to Johannesburg on the day.
Any willing soldiers should advance to this top secret location to learn more about how to decode this message. You have until the 4th of November to decode the encrypted message.
Over and out.

It has been a while since I have played a Splinter Cell title and having not enjoyed prior experiences in this stealth genre I was not expecting much. Nevertheless I donned my “professional” game reviewer hat and popped by the impressive Megarom showcase at rAge 2009 to see if Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell Conviction on the Xbox 360 could impress.
Whilst I didn’t get the opportunity to personally put Sam Fischer through his paces the Megarom staff delivered a more than competent display of the game’s new features. The demo we were shown was hot off the press running on a debug unit and it is looking very promising.

This first thing that hit me observing Sam in action was the much grittier action that was unfolding. You start off interrogating a suspect and the level of brutality is intense. If you have seen Casino Royale and consider the harder more intense Daniel Craig portrayal of Bond, then that relates very closely to the shift that has occurred with Sam. With good reason too as Sam is no longer working for Third Echelon as he suspects them as he sets off on his own revenge mission trying to find the killer of his daughter.
The game is looking very seamless in that one minute you are drooling over a cut scene and then you are in the action needing to control Sam. I am not talking about quicktime events here but rather interrogating suspects. You’re watching and then next minute it is your turn to open up a can of whip-ass on the bad man. Smash him into the wall, urinal or anything else in the environment that takes your fancy. One thing for sure is he is going to talk or die… probably both. The violence is real in your face stuff and will certainly result in a high age rating being slapped on this title.

There are many nice touches noticeable in the demo and another one that keeps you engrossed in the plot is the way objectives are delivered to you. Since you are no longer employed, there is no-one feeding you Intel and mission objectives. Instead as you progress, maiming and interrogating your way through the city, your next goal is written on the floor or wall etc…within the environment. It is really nifty in that you are not jarred out of the story into some mission debriefing or popup window. Well done guys!
Two new noticeable additions are the “mark and execute” and “last known position” game mechanics. To gain the ability to “mark and execute” you need to do a stealth kill to replenish the ability. Once available you can survey your environment and tactically take out the destructible lights and guards. Essentially you pre-record your moves by marking your targets with a laser pointer in the sequence you want to shoot them in. Then when you are ready you execute your plan and if all goes well you neutralize the enemy before they can call for help. It is an impressive feature to see when pulled off and adds a nice dynamic to the game. You are limited in the number of targets you can mark so don’t think you are going to breeze through the levels!

With “last known position” when you are detected a ghost imprint of you is shown in the environment for your own benefit. Enemies will target that position and make there way towards it to terminate you. In the meanwhile you can sneak around the environment and flank them, effectively taking them by surprise. A nice touch that adds that little bit extra to the gameplay.
Sam has to be self sufficient so alas we no longer have the green night vision goggles that are synonymous with Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell titles… but hey maybe you find some in later levels. In the demo you need to improvise so snap off a side mirror from a motor vehicle and now you have a valuable tool to help you see underneath doors. I really like the direction here and hope this level on environmental interaction continues throughout.

I am sure Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell Conviction is going to resonate with series fan and new gamers alike giving them a fresh experience which is gritty and real. You can choose to go in through the front door so to speak or sneak in through another side window… you get to choose and that is what counts. Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell Conviction is slated for release in February 2010 on Xbox 360.

You may remember a little while ago that El33tonline and Megarom teamed up to bring you the Fantastic Friday Mystery PS3 Prize Hamper competition. What you may not know is that the contents of the hamper were not only a secret to you all, but so top secret that we didn’t even know what was up for grabs!
Oltman Botha was the lucky gamer who had to wait a short while for the prize to be delivered and his curiosity to be sated. Read below for his blow by blow account of unwrapping this awesome prize.
Ode from a gamer
“As I walked into the office, I saw the little brown box. It felt heavier than I thought it would. Must be some hardware for the new server system. So I did not open it right away. About 5 minutes later I get a phone call from reception: “Hi Oltman, package for you at reception.” This must be it! Woohoo!
I take a brisk walk, not to look too excited. Running down the corridors is a big no no. I have a reputation to uphold after all. I get the package. It looks disappointingly small. And light. My hope sinks into my shoes. And I have big shoes, with lots of room for sinking hope. I slowly cut open the tape sealing the precious items. Upon opening it I turn it upside down expecting a single disc to fall out. But instead a memory chip falls out onto my desk. Hang on, if this is the server memory, then what’s in the other box? It dawned on me that I was just way too greedy!
Of T-shirts and figurines
I throw the memory and its box away, grab the little heavy brown box and rip it open. I am greeted by blackness. At first I thought I passed out, but it was blackness from some T-shirts! Sweet! I need new PJ’s! One is for Aion, the new MMO from NCSoft. The second one is Guitar Hero Metallica. Funny how all promo shirts are always black…but I digress! There is more to discover!
Just like Columbus I move passed the unknown darkness and grab hold of a lanyard. Another black one with Aion branding. Top quality! As I pull it out I nearly get stabbed by Alex Mercer, the protagonist from the game Prototype. It’s an awesomely detailed figurine about 15-20cm tall. He looks angry at me. I gently put him back so he can nap a bit more.
Down to business…games!
Off to the side I see a few slim CD cases. Let’s get down to business! I wonder if they are in any sort of order. First up we have X-Men Origins: Wolverine – Uncaged Edition. Wow, I don’t thinks it’s in alphabetical order, as there won’t be many games left after this. It scores a respectable 73 on Metacritic and should be a nice addition to my collection.
Secondly we have Transformers – Revenge of the Fallen. A 63 score game that proves that most games based on action blockbusters are just bust without the block. Should be cool to see if they have Linkin Park in there, the best part of the movie.
Next up, 007 Quantum of Solace. Apparently the best Bond game since Golden Eye on the N64. I have played the demo before and it feels a bit like Gears of War, but with the famous Bond theme. Sweet!
And it just keeps on getting better!
This followed by Marvel: Ultimate Alliance. You can play as Spidey (or any other Marvel character) and team up with any other Marvel character. Nice! Really looking forward to this one!
Not really being a Metallica fan, I had the privilege of walking out of their show when they were in Durban a few years ago. Fatboy Slim was much better anyway. Now I will have the chance to do it all over again with Guitar Hero Metallica. In fact, I can make Lars and the gang fail miserably at their own songs, which will cause me a little bit of fun. Yay! See, I never look a gift horse in the mouth!
Finally, Shaun White Snowboarding is the white powder version of Tony Hawk Skateboarding (I stopped counting after Tony Hawk Pro Skateboarding 2). I always wondered if he changed his name to White to be more fitting to his chosen career, or is that just some kind of awesome coincidence? Either way, I am sure to have some fun with this later.
They are ALL mine
And that concludes the White Label games. I know there has been some controversy over selling these and giving them away is causing a lost sale for the developers, and stealing the food of their kids’ plates. Or something like that. But that won’t be a problem for me as I won’t sell them and I won’t give them away! They are mine, all MINE! MWUAHAHA!
But wait, way at the bottom of the box is another shiny item. It’s a full release, still sealed in it plastic wrap, of Sacred 2! A game that draws very mixed feelings from reviewers, it looks promising with couch co-op for 2 players, and great graphics. But since I don’t really fall into the trap of believing reviews, I will make up my own mind on all the games I received.
Thanks Lisa and the gang! And big up to Megarom for this awesome prize! Now how do I convince my wife I need a PS3???”
Thanks Oltman, we are sure you are going to enjoy your prize!
