The man known as Major Nelson has been so kind as to remind us all that child accounts for Facebook, Twitter and Last.fm have now been enabled for US Xbox 360 users. Once granted parental permission, Xbox Live child account holders over the age of 13 will be able to access these applications. The Major reminds everyone to make sure to select automatic logins for all the applications, otherwise you will be prompted for parental permission every time an app is launched. We’d have to agree with his advice. After all, Mom coming in to give you and your friends Tang and lemon squares: Cool. Mom coming in to log you into Facebook: Not cool.

It must have been like Christmas coming early for Halo fans as the debut trailer for Halo: Reach was released worldwide at the Spike TV Video Game Awards this past weekend.

Halo: Reach is the prequel to the Halo trilogy and sees players stepping into the boots of a Spartan III. The game is currently in development at Bungie Studios and is scheduled to be released in fall 2010.
Be amazed by the first in-game footage of the new Halo game below. The footage is taken from part of the game’s opening cinematic and provides the first look at the story, introducing players to Noble Team, a squad of battle-hardened Spartan soldiers. Halo: Reach “charts the story of Noble Team in their heroic stand to defend the planet Reach, its people and secrets against a ruthless assault by an alien collective known as the Covenant.”
Halo: Reach will be available exclusively for the Xbox 360 in fall 2010. Players can obtain access to the Halo: Reach multiplayer beta in spring 2010 exclusively through Halo 3: ODST.

As you might have already guessed, last night’s
Spike Video Game Awards show’s “World Premiere” trailers have landed on the web via
GameTrailers.com. First up for us this morning:
Crackdown 2. Featuring the first campaign footage from the game that we’ve seen, it looks as though we’ll be
cooperatively taking down enemies with other agents when the game launches. Moreover, the entire trailer glories in the mass destruction introduced to us in the first
Crackdown, backed up by a “Would you like to blow &%^$ up with me?” soundtrack. Color us
excited.

Update: Microsoft sent over a hi-res version of the trailer (seen above) as well as the screenshot in the gallery below. According to the publisher, Halo: Reach will follow the story of “Noble Team in their heroic stand to defend the planet Reach.” The company also noted that a “multiplayer beta is coming [in] Spring 2010.” Hooray!
As promised, Spike’s 2009 Video Game Awards delivered the first footage (in-game, ‘natch) of Halo: Reach to the masses. More Spartans? Check! Female Spartans? Check check! A skullfaced Spartan? Wait … what?! Since the show just aired, we’ve got a low-res version of the trailer for you after the break and will have a prettied up version as soon as it’s available.

The US games industry’s performance numbers are out for November and,
as expected, software sales were
lead dominated by Activision / Infinity Ward’s
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 on Xbox 360 and PS3. The game sold 4.2 million copies during the month on Microsoft’s console, while the version for Sony’s machine sold 1.9 million. Coming in an extremely strong second was
New Super Mario Bros. Wii at 1.4 million copies, proving that 1) people still love the plumber and 2) if a Wii game is published by Nintendo, it sells like crazy (well, unless it also has “
Wii Music” in its title).
Nintendo lead in hardware sales, with the number of DS units sold skyrocketing by 262% to 1.7 million units — that’s better than the same month last year. Wii sold over two million last November; this year it hit 1.26 million for the month, indicative of the year-long decline in sales the console’s been experiencing. Its competitors, Xbox 360 and PS3, sold 820 thousand and 710 thousand units, respectively.
-DS: 1.7M
1.2M (+262%)
-Wii: 1.26M
753K (+149%)
-360: 820K
570K (+228%)
-PS3: 710K
389K (+121%)
-PSP: 294K
119K (+76%)
-PS2: 203K
85K (72%)
Check out the software sales chart after the break.

Flatly rejecting the holiday spirit of giving, Microsoft has released a new collection of premium Avatar items. As you may have guessed, the items have a holiday theme. The collection encompasses a large range of items from New Year’s hats to dashikis to dreidels. Microsoft has even released the traditional ugly Christmas sweater, even going so far as to title it “Ugly Sweater.” That’s right, you can spend real money on a digital version of the worst possible present you could receive.
The only thing more depressing is knowing that people will actually buy it.

Just in case you feel like decking your Xbox Live Avatar out in the latest seasonal wardrobe, Microsoft has released a number of holiday themed items.

For instance, you could elect to purchase an elf outfit, or perhaps a Santa Claus (or Mrs Claus) costume. But then again nothing gets you in the festive spirit quite like pointy elf shoes or a gingerbread cookie prop.
Head over to the Xbox Marketplace to join the festivities.

When Microsoft rolled out Twitter, Facebook, and Last.fm support for the Xbox 360, a number of users were less than impressed. Specifically, those with child Xbox Live accounts were not allowed to use any of the new applications. Outside the US, Microsoft has now released an update that allows child accounts to access these features, so long as parental permission is given. Major Nelson advises users to set each application to log in automatically upon first activation. Otherwise, those with child accounts will be prompted for parental permission every time the application is launched.
Fear not, US gamers, the update will hit American shores on December 15.

Say what you will about Rare, it certainly knows us. The company announced via its Twitter account that the XBLA version of Perfect Dark was officially slated for early 2010 and not winter like it promised, and before we could even work ourselves into the hint of a lather, Rare chided that the window “is still ‘winter’, stop moaning.”
To help smooth things over a little more the company dropped the fresh screenshot you can see above. OK, Rare, you’re forgiven … this time.

Microsoft and Turn 10’s latest racing simulation game, Forza Motorsport 3, has managed to sell over 1 million copies worldwide since its release in late October.

According to Microsoft, players of Forza 3 have logged over 6.6 million collective hours of game time while playing online, all across over 64 million play sessions.
In addition, players have driven over 590 million miles (or 949.5 million kilometres) in the game, which as Microsoft points out, is equal to “more than three trips from the Earth to the Sun and back.”
To improve these statistics even further, Turn 10 released the Hot Holidays Car Pack on Tuesday which includes 10 new cars, and is yours for 400 MS Points.
El33tonline was rather impressed with Forza 3, so why not read our review to see why over a million gamers were whipped up into such a frenzy.
