Modern Warfare 2 patch available now, Javelin glitch tossed out

December 11th, 2009 at 11:45am Under Xbox 360

Huzzah! No more of your intense Headquarters Pro matches will be interrupted by gargantuan, killer shockwaves expelled by morally dubious combatants. That is to say, Modern Warfare 2’s Javelin glitch, which enabled a dirty, cheating player to instantly detonate upon death, was fixed earlier this morning by a patch for the Xbox 360 version of the game. According to a recent tweet from Infinity Ward’s Robert Bowling, the PS3 version of the game has already received the patch.

In addition to removing the Javelin’s unadvertised self-immolation feature, the patch also fixes the equally insidious “unlimited care packages” glitch, and fixes a few areas where players could exploit gaps in the game’s geography. In a perfect world, Infinity Ward would have also sent parcels to the houses of anyone who leveraged these exploits — parcels full of bees. The bad kind. The kind you see on the Discovery Channel. The ones that can kill a full-grown elephant with a surprisingly small swarm.

GAME and Activision UK team up for Modern Warfare 2 charity event next weekend

November 25th, 2009 at 08:30pm Under Xbox 360

War Child International is a coalition of organizations that seeks to aid children affected by war. Activision UK and GAME have decided to pitch in and are joining up to host an online event next weekend in Modern Warfare 2, asking that UK citizens play a bit of the game on Xbox Live. The more people enlist for action online, the more Activision UK will donate to the charity.

If you’re looking for more information on the event, there’s a Facebook page and a Twitter account set up to help coordinate. If you’ve got a busy weekend ahead of you on December 4, try to make time for at least one online match. It’s not every day you can make someone else’s life better just by playing a video game.

Xbox Live Top 10: People apparently played CoD4, World at War

November 18th, 2009 at 11:30am Under Xbox 360

Seriously, guys? Everyone on the planet runs out and buys Modern Warfare 2 and you’re still playing Call of Duty 4 and World at War? We can understand you folks who chose to play Halo 3 — the whole Modern Warfare 2 experience may not be your idea of a good time — but Major Nelson’s Xbox Live activity chart for the week of November 9 simply vexes us.

In less puzzling news, the XBLA activity is along the lines of something we’re used to seeing. Trials HD remains atop the list, followed by Castle Crashers and South Park Let’s Go Tower Defense Play. Konami’s Zombie Apocalypse also managed to survive the gauntlet and make its way onto the list and, combined with the recent release of Left 4 Dead 2, we feel mankind is finally starting to reach acceptable levels of preparation for the inevitable future of a world plagued by the undead.

Infinity Ward talking about spin-off game starring Modern Warfare 2’s ‘Ghost’

November 15th, 2009 at 02:30pm Under Xbox 360

Though Modern Warfare 2 is rife with instantly accessible, beloved characters with fascinating names, we all know that one stands out as the franchise’s most memorable protagonist: Ghost. You know, Ghost! He’s got that skull mask, and there was that one scene where that guy’s about to shoot you, and then Ghost shoots him right back. He’s already risen to fame somewhat when he received a six-part comic series telling his story — but if the actor who provides the spectral hero’s voice is to be believed, he might just show up in his own video game as well.

Craig Fairbrass, who not only did the voice for Ghost in MW2, but also voiced the equally unfortunately named Gaz in the original Modern Warfare, mentioned, “I’m now voicing a guy called Ghost, who now just got a spin-off comic of his own and they’re talking about another little game to go with it.” Little game? Based on the number of Michael Bay-esque explosions in the first five minutes of Modern Warfare 2, we’re not sure Infinity Ward is capable of making those.

Metareview: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare – Reflex

November 12th, 2009 at 08:00pm Under Wii / Nintendo

When the original Call of Duty: Modern Warfare was announced for the Wii, we kinda had to do a double-take on the whole thing. Would one of the current generation’s most popular games be done justice on the Wii? Well, according to what few reviews have made their way online, yes … and no!

  • Nintendo Dpad (85/100): “Overall, the game is just what you would expect from an HD game like Call of Duty 4 being ported to Wii. Everything is there, from the great multiplayer and single player modes, to Wii specific controls that really trump those found on other consoles. The only real bad part is that the graphics needed a major step down for the port, and we would have liked WiiSpeak support for those who prefer that, though it is not necessary.”
  • ONM UK (80/100): “Given the extra two years Treyarch had to squeeze every last drop of polish from the Wii, this is underwhelming visually. It looks okay for a Wii game – that’s the dreaded caveat – but it’s not even up there with Metroid Prime: Corruption. Having said that, Modern Warfare is still an excellent shooter packed with options and it should be a big player online so we can welcome it to the Wii family.”
  • IGN (70/100): “Unfortunately, Reflex Edition on Wii just doesn’t cut it as a Call of Duty branded game or as a top-tier Wii first-person shooter. The framerate is jumpy, the pointer tracking needs some serious polish, and while most of the elements of COD4 are included, none of them are given enough fine-tuning to truly excel.”

Digital Foundry analyzes Wii Modern Warfare, deemed ‘functional’

November 11th, 2009 at 07:30pm Under Wii / Nintendo

Obviously, the Wii port of Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare was going to have a few setbacks visually. However, Digital Foundry’s recent hands-on with the game suggests developer Treyarch was successful in recreating the overall feel of the original game. “Texture detail and geometry levels are savagely hacked down, lighting effects and shadowing are brutally pared back, frame-rate is cut from 60FPS down to the more manageable 30FPS,” the preview notes. However, “it does a good enough job of capturing the look of the original,” Digital Foundry concludes.

Of course, visuals aren’t the most important aspect of Modern Warfare’s transition to the Wii. Digital Foundry answers the hard-pressing question: how does it control? At times “beautifully,” although “awkward button placement on the controller makes things difficult for anything other than running and gunning.”

It may be watered down, but Reflex will finally grant Wii owners the ability to see what all the fuss was about. While the port is deemed “functional,” we can’t help but lament the fact that this Wii port still can’t best some games from the last generation of consoles.

Modern Warfare: Reflex footage inspires passionate comment

November 6th, 2009 at 12:40pm Under Wii / Nintendo

“now all you 360 lovers can suck it!!!!! this game looks great.” – natevberg, YouTube commenter

No insight from us relating to the recently leaked footage of the training mission from Modern Warfare: Reflex (and, prior to that, the original Modern Warfare) is required. Mr. natevberg seems to sum up the raw emotion of the video beautifully. To see the modern waggle controls in action, check out the video after the jump.

Initial Modern Warfare 2 budget was ‘ridiculous’

November 3rd, 2009 at 08:30pm Under Xbox 360

During an interview with Develop, Infinity Ward’s front-line man, Robert “fourzerotwo” Bowling, recalled the early planning stages of Modern Warfare 2. Unsurprisingly, publisher and owner Activision was eager to pour money into the development of the COD4 sequel, following the basic business formula: more money = better product = more sales = more money. Infinity Ward followed another school of thought: “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.”

“Much like we don’t let ourselves get distracted by hype, if you have excess you feel like you should use excess,” Bowling said. Even though Activision “estimated out a ridiculous budget” early on, Infinity Ward “didn’t let the budget affect [its] mentality.” Since Infinity Ward apparently didn’t take the money (or, at least, all of it), we do have a pretty good idea of what Activision spent it on: night-vision goggles for everyone!

Custom Modern Warfare 2 Xbox is riddled with bullets

November 2nd, 2009 at 01:45pm Under Xbox 360

Don’t worry, no one actually shot an Xbox. No, this box was decoratively riddled with bullets. Specifically, notice that the face buttons on the controller as well as the buttons on the console are actually bullet shell casings. And let’s not forget the custom Modern Warfare 2 artwork on the side, which is back-lit by LEDs inside the case. In short, it’s a pretty nice mod. It was created by one Mr. Tornado and is featured at ModernWarfare2Forums.net. As you might expect, it’s up for auction on eBay, and the bid is already over $200.

We think it would look great with the Prestige Edition of Modern Warfare 2 and, let’s face it, if you can afford one of those, then snatching up this Xbox should be chump change. Hit the source link for more pictures.

Retailers list Modern Warfare 2 bundle for November 10 [update]

October 18th, 2009 at 09:00pm Under Xbox 360

Update: A Microsoft representative has contacted us to say that the bundle will be shipping on November 10. As the bundle includes a retail copy of the game, Microsoft is unable to allow these to ship any earlier, meaning those who pre-ordered from the sites mentioned below will likely be waiting a few days before their bundle arrives. Sorry, folks!

We can’t say that we were exactly taken aback to find out a couple of online retailers are listing the upcoming Modern Warfare 2-paired 250GB Xbox 360 launch as November 10, the same day the game arrives at retailers nationwide. An eagle-eyed reader at Joystiq sister site Engadget spotted the bundle at both Amazon and Costco (GameStop also has the Nov. 10 ship date listed), where the details re-confirm the bundle’s lack of a component cable (for shame!). We’ve contacted Activision to make sure we’re not being led astray, but it’d be hard to expect those willing to shell out the 399 clams for the bundle to have to wait to get their fool-shootin‘ on.
