Laser etcher plays the Mario theme for you

November 16th, 2009 at 02:45pm Under DS

How To Ruin Your Moment of Internet Glory:
  1. Work for an unconscionable number of hours making a laser etcher improbably play a fine rendition of the World 1-1 music from Super Mario Bros.
  2. Let Cory Doctorow film it.
  3. Listen as he rewards your hard work with terrible internet cliches, and, in doing so, almost completely obscures the audio you crafted.
  4. Cry yourself to sleep.

Video tutorial right after the break.

Buy this real-life Halo Mongoose

November 5th, 2009 at 07:15pm Under Xbox 360

Boy, we’ve seen a lot of real-life custom Halo vehicles lately. First there was a tiny, completely huggable Warthog, then a full-size Warthog and now we’ve got a working, custom Mongoose. The vehicle was spotted on Craigslist and, according to the seller, it was originally used as part of a Halo 3 launch event. A modified 2007 Kawasaki KFX 700 ATV, the seller claims it was won in a drawing, but now he has to sell it. If you could use a “mint condition” Mongoose — and have $9000 laying around — this baby can be all yours.

Once you pick it up, all you’ll need is a buddy and a (Nerf) rocket launcher and you’ve got instant good times.

Custom Modern Warfare 2 Xbox is riddled with bullets

November 2nd, 2009 at 01:45pm Under Xbox 360

Don’t worry, no one actually shot an Xbox. No, this box was decoratively riddled with bullets. Specifically, notice that the face buttons on the controller as well as the buttons on the console are actually bullet shell casings. And let’s not forget the custom Modern Warfare 2 artwork on the side, which is back-lit by LEDs inside the case. In short, it’s a pretty nice mod. It was created by one Mr. Tornado and is featured at ModernWarfare2Forums.net. As you might expect, it’s up for auction on eBay, and the bid is already over $200.

We think it would look great with the Prestige Edition of Modern Warfare 2 and, let’s face it, if you can afford one of those, then snatching up this Xbox should be chump change. Hit the source link for more pictures.

Behold, the world’s most adorable Warthog

October 13th, 2009 at 03:45pm Under Xbox 360

We know a little something about adorable, so believe us when we say that this is, by far, the cutest, cuddliest Warthog we have ever seen. Created by flux83, the car is modified Power Wheels Chevy Silverado. It comes complete with custom windshield, hubcaps, chain gun and even the Warthog’s trademark tusks. Check out a video of the Warthog in action after the break.

While you watch, ponder what it’s like growing up with a father whose hobby is making awesome Power Wheels mods. Luckiest. Kid. Ever.

Mod: Buttons and analog sticks just don’t get along

October 5th, 2009 at 04:45pm Under Xbox 360

We’ve seen plenty of interesting Xbox 360 controller mods. From one-handed controls to controls with swapped parts to other one-handed controls, the 360 mod scene is pretty lively. This one is definitely different from the usual mods we see though, with the right stick and face buttons switching places and being pushed to the edges of the control. Built by Acidmods, the controller was designed for a disabled player so that he could hold the control more comfortably. The quality of the build is pretty impressive, with nary a scratch, cut or patch to be seen. And, of course, the best part is that it actually works.

See it in action after the break.

Ben Heck’s one-handed, aesthetically challenged 360 controller

September 25th, 2009 at 05:00pm Under Xbox 360

At first glance, you would never believe that the one-handed Xbox 360 controller above is the work of modder extraordinaire, Ben Heck. Given the svelte, smooth and attractive one-handed controllers he’s made before, it’s a bit hard to believe this is his work. However, the Heck points out this was a rush-job, so we suppose we can forgive him just this once. The controller features a duplicate left analog stick on the bottom, which players move by placing it on their leg. There are also extra an extra back button and left bumper button just above the face buttons. To top everything off, Ben Heck even squeezed the left trigger under the right side, where it can be pulled with the middle finger.

Not his most elegant work, but impressive nonetheless. See a video of it in action after the break.

Fan makes Mushroom Kingdom in Left 4 Dead

September 15th, 2009 at 12:11pm Under Wii / Nintendo

We’d love to have a psychiatrist take a shot at this one. What kinda dude says, “You know, the Mushroom Kingdom from Super Mario 64 is all very nice and whimsical, but what I’d really like to do is murder hordes of the undead in it. Oh, and I’d call it ‘Mushroom Massacre’”?

We’re feigning being troubled by it, but, whatever the diagnosis, we’re supremely glad people like DoritoClock, who made this particularly colorful Left 4 Dead map, exist.

If Fisher-Price made a portable 360 …

September 10th, 2009 at 07:45pm Under Xbox 360

… we imagine it would look a little something like this. Behold the Xbox 1080, created by one Carl Archambeault. First of all, let’s stress that this product is not real. It’s a conceptual mock-up, designed to “combine the gaming power of the Xbox 360 and the music and video power of the Microsoft Zune.” It doesn’t actually work though — close inspection of the photos will reveal the handmade nature of the device.

As much as we like the idea of having a portable Xbox 360 — and we’re not the only ones — the design leaves something to be desired. It’s a bit largish, for one, and the bubbly aesthetics don’t really match the svelte concavity of the Xbox 360. Also, we’re not too sure about that toaster pop-up screen either. Still, it’s a nice start and, heck, if you could play Halo on it, who cares what it looks like?

Valve seeks to bring PC players’ Left 4 Dead 2 mods to 360

September 9th, 2009 at 06:14pm Under Xbox 360

Valve is hopeful it can find a way to make user-generated content from the PC version of Left 4 Dead 2 available to Xbox 360 users, the company told OXM UK. “One of the things I’d like to do is to allow these modules that are being released on PC to somehow integrate with Microsoft’s system,” Yasser Mailaka, a “team player” at the developer said.

He’s talking about custom campaigns made with L4D2’s PC-only mod tools, which we’re certain will be put to use straight away turning the game’s zombies into all manner of famous people and copyrighted characters (ie: Shaun of the Dead). At least Valve won’t have a proble– hold on, what’s this? “We’ll have to filter them, we can’t allow any copyrighted materials, so it’s going to have to go through a process,” Mailaka pointed out, dashing our dreams of escaping from not one, but hordes of shambling Andy Dicks.

Mailaka said that Valve is “hoping perhaps we can shepherd the really popular campaigns onto 360. And you know, if they are a paid system, perhaps that could go back to the authors. I think that would be a great story.” You know what, it would — but so would a mod where you have to avoid being trampled at Walmart on Black Friday. Hey, that sounds like a good L4D campaign: “Black Friday … Escape or Die Buying.”

Ben Heck swaps 360 D-pad with buttons, world implodes

September 2nd, 2009 at 10:15pm Under Xbox 360

We’re just going to come out and say it: Ben Heckendorn — AKA Ben Heck — has absolutely no respect for manufacturer warranties. The man cracks open every single piece of hardware he comes across, voiding warranties like blades of grass through a lawnmower. Case in point: observe his latest affront on warrantability, an Xbox 360 controller with buttons where the D-pad should be. Worse still, the D-pad now occupies the former location of the face buttons.

As if that weren’t enough, the warrantless warranty wrecker swapped the left and right triggers and added more buttons on the back of the controller that mirror the functions of the face buttons. Heckendorn claims the controller was made for a paying customer and that he makes such controllers to “allow more options for persons that may have a hard time with normal controller configurations.”

Hogwash, we say. We recognize a (warranty) killer when we see one.
