Two Japanese DSiWare games with clever camera uses

December 11th, 2009 at 02:45pm Under DS

The upcoming Japanese DSiWare game Katamuction uses the system’s cameras in a unique way: to simulate tilt control. Using Motion Cortex, technology originally designed for motion-based browsing on cell phones, the game uses camera information to sense the direction in which the DS is moved. And what is that technology used for? A game about running away from a dinosaur! Katamuction will be out December 24 for 500 DSi Points.

Fight with Pictures: Photo Fighter X from Nintendo uses the camera to create fighting game characters: you take photos of yourself in various poses, and the game makes a fighter out of it! It’s out in Japan next week for 200 points.

Yes, Excitebike World Rally has some motion control

October 28th, 2009 at 06:16pm Under Wii / Nintendo

Wait! Come back! The motion controls sound okay! We know that you’re already groaning about the potential ruin of an NES classic with unwarranted waggle, but according to 1UP’s preview of Excitebike: World Rally, the limited Wiimote motion sensing added to the traditional Excitebike control scheme actually improves the game.

You still move with the D-pad and accelerate with a button, but you can now tilt the Wiimote to lean your rider and “affect the pitch of your bike.” “Jumping was always the trickiest part of Excitebike,” 1UP’s Jeremy Parish notes, “and the analog smoothness of the motion controls makes it intuitive — it became second nature before the end of the first track.”

We’re curious enough about this sensible-sounding innovation that we’ll delay throwing our controllers down in disgust. For now.

Natal in Fable 3 hinted by a paranoid Molyneux

October 5th, 2009 at 10:54am Under Xbox 360

In an interview with Joystiq, Microsoft’s Phil Spencer said he wouldn’t be surprised to see Project Natal integration in Fable 3. Another person who wouldn’t be surprised? The guy in charge of Fable 3. Peter Molyneux told Game Kings that he was “leaving the most exciting gameplay stuff for later.” He then added, “I am going to say it’s going to use a controller, but I’ve never said it’s not going to use Natal.”

“And obviously what would probably happen if I started talking about this is you would see a little red dot appear moving on my forehead,” Molyneux continued. “And then as I would start to speak the words then there would be a shotgun fire, and I would be assassinated. Quite clearly, it is that sensitive.” But not so sensitive that he can’t quite nearly confirm it in the next breath.

“Do you really think, knowing me, as maybe you do over the years, I wouldn’t want to use something like Natal? I mean, that’s just mad, man.” Let’s just lay it out here: The guy responsible for basically the only known Natal project is going to put some Natal segments in Fable 3. We all know this. It’s going to happen. Try to look surprised when it’s announced at whichever trade show next year.

Red Octane ‘evaluating’ Project Natal, other motion devices

September 22nd, 2009 at 01:58pm Under Xbox 360

Guitar Hero peripheral maker Red Octane has been adding approximately 2.5 plastic instruments per year to each American household for nearly four years now. If you’re using your computer from atop a stack of music game peripherals like we are, you’ll be happy (or perhaps dismayed) to hear Red Octane prez Kai Huang told Digital Spy that his company is looking into Project Natal and “a lot of other different technologies that could enhance the Guitar Hero playing experience.”

Huang specifically picked out Natal to address the “many different things you can do with it,” echoing statements made by MTV Games last month on the next iteration of the Rock Band franchise. He outlined some potential implementations in the “motion detecting; maybe sensing how you’re playing, or the ability to use it for interactivity purposes and taking advantage of it for party purposes.” Huang, however, remained cagey on specifics, restating his company is still “evaluating it.” Though the tech’s still in its relative infancy, as of right now it seems that next year’s music-rhythm games are going to feel very different than this year’s bunch. We’ve dropped a demonstration of how awesome you might look playing them after the break!

Microsoft hiring 18 for new Natal dev team

September 16th, 2009 at 08:00pm Under Xbox 360

Microsoft is looking to add 18 new faces to its payroll in an attempt to bolster development on software implementing its new body movin’ technology, Project Natal. These positions run the gamut from producer to audio director, all of which will be based out of Microsoft Game Studios’ campus in Redmond, Washington — indicating that MGS is building an entire team to work on future Natal projects.

If you’re a game developer with clever, original ideas about how the technology can be used, then check out Microsoft’s now hiring page. If you’ve got a clever, original idea about a motion-sensitive Tae Bo fitness game, then keep that garbage to yourself.

Red Steel 2 director would ‘love’ to see series on 360, PS3

September 8th, 2009 at 07:00pm Under Xbox 360

During a Q&A session following the PAX demo of Red Steel 2, creative director Jason VandenBerghe told Joystiq that he would “love” to see Red Steel arrive on other platforms. When asked about the possibilities of the new motion control options headed to PS3 and Xbox 360, VandenBerghe said, “I personally would love to see any and all consoles have more sword fighting experiences.” He then added that any decision to develop the series on other consoles would be up to Ubisoft.

Here’s hoping Ubisoft decides to throw us more than a deluge of Rabbids once the 360 and PS3 climb aboard the motion control bandwagon.

Natal to be ‘a union’ of Microsoft and Rare’s philosophies

August 25th, 2009 at 06:30pm Under Xbox 360

Despite having released a number of games on the platform, Rare’s Xbox 360 franchises haven’t had the fan following of your War Gears and your Halos — the developer’s design director, George Andreas, chalks this up to the fact that the “hardware is aimed at a different demographic, and so we’ve always battled against that.” That is fairly true — the hardcore Xbox 360 audience has little patience for anthropomorphic piñatas or bird-backpacked bears. However, Andreas has hope for the future — a future which will see the introduction of Microsoft’s full-body controller, Project Natal.

Andreas has stated Rare’s interest in the new technology before, but in a recent interview with VideoGamer.com, he further explained the studio’s excitement — “it’s a union of the two philosophies of the different companies, I guess,” he said. Sounds like Rare’s sticking to its family-friendly roots — we suppose that rules out the possibility of Rare’s secret Natal project being Gun Murder 3: The Legend of the Lost Shoot-Blaster.

Johnny Lee: Natal will spawn new genres

July 7th, 2009 at 11:00am Under Xbox 360

If Johnny Chung Lee says something, we’re inclined to believe him, and not just because we’re almost certain he’s a wizard. So when he says that Microsoft’s body-tracking Project Natal will “almost certainly” spawn new genres, we’re inclined to nod our heads in agreement.

“Natal provides a very different set of input capabilities than your typical game pad,” he told 360 Magazine. “To really take advantage of those capabilities, new kinds of experiences will have to be explored.”

Wait, is “NAMBLA sim” a genre?
